The Shrill of it All: A Rae Greyson Mystery Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Rae Greyson thinks using sarcasm is like wearing underwear: nice or nasty, it must be part of a daily routine. Her other quirks include nail biting, finding solace in soothing sounds and tripping over dead bodies.

Strong and witty, Rae feels no need to have a male in her life. Unexpectedly, she ends up with three: tasty Stone Winters; adoring nephew, Bash; and remarkable Tiny, a Great Shepherd who is the size of a Russian transport helicopter. Normally avoiding large dogs, Rae can't seem to shake this one, especially while house-sitting her boss's Victorian manor. As haunting events occur, she finds herself at the center of a murder mystery and learns that even feisty five-footers, such as herself, can use the help of a taxing canine, or of a woodland creature whose sharp shrill can stop a beating heart.

Those who relish fitting jigsaw pieces of lies, lore and lunacy into one interlocking puzzle will love
The Shrill of it All: A Rae Greyson Mystery. With a hint of magical realism, this cursed escapade by BW Hoff will give anyone with an upbeat sense of humor a thrilling ride. Who doesn't like a good stomach drop? So, tighten the harness and enjoy the twists!

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This perfectly paced mystery is laugh out loud funny. The unexpected plot twists make it hard to put down. I stays up all night! The quirky characters will capture your heart and leave you hoping for more from this author." -Leslie Matthews Stansfield, author of the Madeline's Teahouse series

About the Author

Like the protagonist in The Shrill of it All, BW Hoff has dealt with pushy employers in the graphic design field, has tangled with a band of French gypsies and has an aversion to beastly dogs. Unlike Rae, murder mysteries excite her, ever since she watched Hart to Hart with her mom while recuperating form pneumonia at the age of nine. High fevers aside, those were the good ol' days. BW Hoff currently spends her good new days with her husband, two children, mom and dad, cousins, friends, her older brother and sister-in-law, and Lambeau, her inspiration for Tiny.

This has to be an all time favorite book. I was hooked from the first chapter and cannot set it down! I’m constantly questioning every interaction between the characters. I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to figure out what’s going to happen next, and dying laughing at Rae’s bad luck and humor. This book was cleverly crafted and I cannot wait until the next BW Hoff book comes out!

The book is a good mix of fantasy, mystery and humor. The characters are very well developed and the author is clever and witty. I will only be disappointed when I finish the book and have to wait for the next one!

I love the characters in this book! Female detectives are my favorite, and I loved the perspective changes throughout the book (even the dog tells part of the story). It was really fun to see how their nicknames and quirky (but tasteful) behaviors contributed to the plot. I appreciated that the author kept it clean but not too PG. I look forward to the next book in this series.

I am not the biggest fan of mystery books, but this book changed my mind, I wanted to try something new and I ended up loving it. I rate this book 5/5 stars, this book was a new eye-opener for me and I have a feeling I will be reading more mystery novels in the future now as well too. This book was like a puzzle to me, I was connecting the dots and putting things together during the duration of the book, and I like how this book kept me on my toes. As I was reading this book I was constantly predicting what I thought would happen and I was far off most of the time which made this book even better.

This is, considered it is a murder mystery, fun witty and snarky. Rae and her nephew 12 year old Bash are house sitting for Rae’s boss Travis The Torch. Two years previously a young girl disappeared from the same house and now her spirit seems to be haunting them. My suspicion as to the murderer from when we first met them was correct but didn’t spoil the story at all. I’m very much looking forward to reading further Rae Grayson Mysteries.
I actually read the 2nd book first and then went hunting for this one, I wasn’t disappointed.
