Christian Marriage: Devotionals From Both Perspectives (Christian Devotional Collaborations) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 82 ratings

Marriage is designed by God, it’s His idea, and it is for good.

Have you ever seen those marriages that seem to just have everything together? It’s clear that God is in the center of it, and that He put those people together. Well, this book is NOT full of those. God may have formed the unions, as only He can, but these are stories of REAL marriages, problems, and God-given solutions. One day, you’ll have that marriage everyone envies, but you’ll also have a story of God’s faithfulness to use that marriage for good.

We need all the help we can get, so I asked my author and married friends for their stories, seeking out the BEST advice they had for cultivating strong, enduring marriages centered on Christ. Some of these devos are from “equally yoked” marriages. Some are from believers married to non-believers, and some are from married couples who found God together along the way.

Made up of real stories from real people about a real God, these devotionals are based in Biblical truth and will encourage, edify, and inspire marriages of all ages and stages.

This book is unique in several ways but mostly because it draws views from a variety of authors, each bringing their own perspective, yet with a common theme on resolving difficulties in marriage - relying on God. This is clearly understandable since it is God who created the marriage institution in the first place and provided sufficient instructions as to how a healthy marriage should work. All of the writers spoke from experience and provided scriptural support to effectively get their message across to the reader. Helpful wisdom and advice is given throughout the book from all writers. Some of the writers demonstrated their views with suggested prayers and review questions which are very helpful.in applying lessons brought out in their devotions. This devotional is an excellent read and will make a wonder gift.

This book is all about how to improve your marriage and the chapters are written by various authors. However, a theme that several of the authors got across is that we shouldn’t focus on what’s wrong with our spouse but rather always remind ourselves of their good aspects and thank God for them. I found this tremendously helpful and I have found it has made a big difference in my attitude toward my wife. Of course, they talk about other helpful and important things that make for a good marriage that would take too long to get into here. It’s best if you buy the book if you’re interested in a godly, Christian marriage. I would definitely recommend this book.

KindleUnlimited review. This Devo Writers Collaboration book is the 6th of the series. I read book 5 but these anthology books by Michael Lacey (and other contributors) do not have to be read sequentially. Although this is a religious collection from various authors, some of the differing viewpoints are useful for non-Christians as well. all. The theology is not uniform but the love of Christ is consistent.

Part I Devo Writers contains multiple personal stories that will peek any reader’s interest. Michael Lacey begins by admitting he’s had a difficult 12-year marriage. It’s not preachy from a “my marriage is perfect” point if view but rather helpful from a “this is what I learned” perspective. Debby Sibert has a chapter specifically for both husbands and wives. Becky Sims and Angie Walthall both discusses datings, dreams of the wedding, and what follows. Maranda Chivers writes about stress eating, newlyweds, marital expectations. Dvora Elisheva examines the importance of trusting your spouse whereas Katie Arthur warns about pride and incompatible spouses.

Part II Other Faithful Spouses continues with itemized lists from what authors learned from years of marriage. There are even Facebook conversions that advocate spiritual advice. There is much more relationship advice (between children, husbands, and wives) in this section from additional authors and various perspectives. My favorite quote from this section is “Autopilot is great for airplanes, but it’s horrible for marriages.”

Although it is most interesting to Christians, it is a good read for all. The bible quote from first Corinthians chapter 13 verses 4-7 is applicable to all healthy marriages: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trttusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

This book presents a collection of devotions from various writers, including some advice from mailing list and social media friends. Many of the devos are quite insightful, such as one devotion’s examination of various methods of communication during conflict, something I could have benefited from years ago as a young bride! Another writer presented an interesting plant analogy about how we can “water” our marriages to get the best growth. Yet another who is married to an atheist provided authentic encouragement to those who may be in the same situation. Overall, this is a worthwhile read for those who are either married or considering it!

I did notice a reference to an Enneagram study which many Christians have concerns about, including me. It was not promoted in any other way- the author only shared it as an additional resource.

Christian Marriage: Devotionals from Both Perspectives by a collaboration of Christian authors is timely, honest, practical, godly, and collectively, inspirational. There is something for everyone, in both wisdom and delivery, by those who are seasoned with life-experiences in marriage. Chapters are short devotions, importing pearls of wisdom concerning married life from different perspectives. Each devotion ends with a short, heartfelt prayer asking God for continued direction. Because these devotions have a Christian worldview of marriage, they collectively conclude that our personal equipping to live successfully as a life partner to another requires a God-centered transformation from within. Marriage is God's covenant, not a human contract, designed to stay the course for life. Revelations from each writer's experience ultimately conclude that a successful marriage relies on God's strength, love, forgiveness, perseverance, joy, faithfulness ... basically his power to shape us more into his likeness so we can better love our spouses, as he loves them. However, these lofty themes are also couched with relatable, every-day problems of married life, giving sensible advice to couples in the here and now. I highly recommend this book for any home library. This is a loving book. This is a healing book. This is a godly book with advice for married couples. Yet the wisdom conveyed in this book is also relevant for living a joyful, other-centered life pleasing to God, married or not.
