Teen Mothers: Designing a Fabulous Life is a book for teen moms who want to achieve a great life for themselves and their children. It is also for those supporting teen moms who wish to offer genuinely helpful assistance.
There are many "expected parenting" books on the market from people who tell you what to expect but haven't walked the walk. Michelle Swann's book differs from them by being informative and adding personal experiences that show the reader that she's been there, lived through it, and being a teen mom didn't ruin her life.
Teenage Mothers: Designing a Fabulous Life is designed to target teen moms, but I found that much of the material benefited any expected first-time parent.
This book doesn't lecture. It doesn't tell you one way is better than another. It doesn't make you feel ashamed about being a young mother. The author gives every side of the spectrum, so you can choose how to raise your child.
Teenage Mothers: Designing a Fabulous Life wraps up by discussing the importance of preparing for your family's future. Raising a child is a costly endeavor. Plans must be made to keep you from living in poverty. While the process might seem overwhelming, there is help out there...you need to seek them out.
Help. Help is a familiar word in this book, and that's precisely what you'll need. Whether you are 16 or 46, you will need help at some point. Lean on others.
I could discuss so much more, but it's best coming from Michelle Swann. I recommend teen moms read this book. Despite the title, there's enough material that first-time moms of any age can find helpful.

Dr. Michelle has written a masterpiece book. Michelle not only researched for the book, she also has first hand experience in being a teen mom... The book is not a 'robotic' or 'matter-of-fact-tone' book. I seemed like a big sister was giving advice to young girls who have yet to experience motherhood.... What makes this book unique is that it not only advises on how to handle children but also gives advice on how to have a great life, even if you have no emotional or financial support... I cannot recommend this book enough.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2023I received a complimentary copy of this book from Reedsy Discovery. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
There are many "expected parenting" books on the market from people who tell you what to expect but haven't walked the walk. Michelle Swann's book differs from them by being informative and adding personal experiences that show the reader that she's been there, lived through it, and being a teen mom didn't ruin her life. Yeah, that's a common stigma against teen moms. Regardless of age, pregnancy and child-raising are not a walk in the park. It's life-changing. It can (at times) drain you mentally, physically, and financially. But it can also be the best rewarding job you will ever have!
"Teenage Mothers: Designing a Fabulous Life" is designed to target teen moms, but I found that much of the material benefited any expected first-time parent. For example, what to expect at doctor visits, how to tell family and friends, and the importance of finishing your education. As there is a stigma about teens having children, the same can be said for women over a certain age having a child. They receive some of the same treatment as their younger counterparts: stares, lectures, and unwanted opinions. Regardless of a mother's age, knowing what to expect at each appointment, common pregnancy complaints, tips on constructing a birthing plan, and what to expect in the four stages of labor can help answer questions you might not even know to ask.
I had my first child when I was twenty, but even then, I wasn't prepared for what would come. I was learning as I went along. Did I fail? Yes. Will you? Of course. Michelle Swann points out that we will all fail at some point; that's human nature. I wish this first-hand resource guide when I was pregnant. I wish someone would've spoken to me from personal experience in real terms, as the author does refreshingly. Michelle Swann did not sugarcoat that every step would go smoothly. In fact, her delivery could have been better. She had two GP (general practitioners) whose bedside manners could have been more professional.
This book doesn't lecture. It doesn't tell you one way is better than another. It doesn't make you feel ashamed about being a young mother. The author gives every side of the spectrum, so you can choose how to raise your child. Cloth or disposable diapers. Bottle or breastfeed. Make the decision that's right for you and your child.
There are a few topics that every parent should follow to a tee:
Never strike your child.
Never smoke near them.
Never shake them.
Be a good role model.
You are your child's first teacher. Teach them to grow up respecting others, and as Michelle Swann says, respect reading over screens. People around you might debate the appropriate time for a child to sit and stare at a screen. Michelle breaks it down from 18 months and up. Michelle also speaks about vaccinations. I know this is a hot topic right now. Many parents are opting out of them, even ones that have been away for decades. While I believe in vaccinations, the choice is ultimately yours to make. The writer doesn't attempt to sway you or even remark on those who abstain from them.
"Teenage Mothers: Designing a Fabulous Life" wraps up by discussing the importance of preparing for your family's future.
Seek medical help if you are feeling depressed. Seek financial assistance. A career counselor. Lean on people who lift you up and want to see you succeed. And never surround yourself with people who don't. Be the advocate for your family. You can do this. Michelle Swann wishes you luck, and so do I.
I could discuss so much more, but it's best coming from Michelle Swann. I recommend teen moms read this book. Despite the title, there's enough material that first-time moms of any age can find helpful.
On a final note, I loved the cute cover and all the family photos.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2023‘Teen Mothers’ is a non-fiction book written by a professional enabling the reader to achieve a better life for themselves and their child. 5.0 out of 5 stars An Authentic, Empowering Read for a Teen Mom
Teen Mothers: Designing a Fabulous Life is a wonderful book written by a teen mother who has done well in life and includes parts of her own stories in the book as examples of what it is like to be a teen mom. The book does not look down on teen mothers but instead celebrates them and offers a pathway to help make their dreams come true. It encourages them to be strong and to set goals to plan for the best future for themselves and their child. The book covers the nitty gritty about pregnancy and childbirth. It notes the common complaints of pregnancy and provides solutions. It provides a comprehensive list of all the things you need to think about in advance before giving birth so that your experience will be the best it can be. It gives a lot of details about the labor process and for example, teaches teen moms how to use breathing to support the birthing process. The book also provides a lot of instructions on newborn care. It helps you identify what your baby might be wanting when he or she cries and goes over feeding, changing, swaddling, teething and colic. It describes the milestones of baby’s first year and let’s you know when you need to take your baby to the doctor. They say it takes a community to raise a child and this book encourages teen moms to reach out for support. It even discusses how to tell your parents that you are pregnant and how to deal with being pregnant at school. The ideas about parenting are realistic and straight forward I like that the book talks about the benefits of being a teen mothers as we are so used to hearing about the negative aspects. This book has an authentic voice and empowers teen moms, presenting a hopeful future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teen Moms, Designing a Fabulous Life
Michelle Swann, the author, has written this book about teen moms based on her own lived experience. She is refreshingly honest about all the ups and downs of her path and now, reflecting on her experiences, offers direction, insight and helpful guidance for every step along the journey for teen moms.
This book shows that despite the societal stigma that teen pregnancy ruins your life, she was able to navigate her way through with ultimate success. She shows how her success didn’t just happen and encourages teen moms to have tenacity and strength as they make choices for their lives. She provides strategies and incentive to write down goals, set priorities and create realistic plans to keep the dream of a positive future alive. For her, this started with the first step of completing high school. Her story encourages pride, a sense of accomplishment and empowerment with every step along the journey.
This book deals with all the unknowns teen moms face, starting with how to tell the news to family, then attending school while pregnant, questions about pregnancy, the birth process and caring for a newborn and a growing child. It covers so many possible questions and fears, giving a teen mom confidence to be an advocate for what she needs. The book addresses the importance of reaching out for support, not trying to tough it out alone, since reaching out is a sign of strength and opens up new possibilities for a teen mom and her child.
I highly recommend this book as such a valuable roadmap for teen moms at a time in their lives when their experience is often so frightening and overwhelming. In fact, it is a great guide for any first mom!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was a game changer for me!
This book is very inspiring and useful for teen mothers and all those that support them. I read it because my niece is a teen mom. The book is very positive in nature and it is also very motivational. The author seems to have written the book so teen moms will avoid becoming statistics and end up living in poverty. The author was a teen mom herself and she includes some interesting stories of her own experience. The book gives good advice about pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care and baby’s milestones for the first year. I skimmed over the milestones chapters but will reread them when my niece’s baby is at the age discussed. The chapters on pregnancy and childbirth took me back to my own experience. There seem to be so many more options for childbirth today. What I like about the book is that aside from pregnancy, childbirth and baby related topics is has a heavy focus on career planning, The author stresses the importance of teen moms getting some kind of training so they can get good jobs and live a good life financially. The book is good because it encourages teen moms to have tenacity and to move forward with their lives and accomplish things career wise. I gave my niece a copy of the book and she read it cover to cover. She liked the book and now has a lot of ideas about what she will do for work. The book is full of useful tips and advice about a lot of subjects related to teen parenting. I recommend it to anyone who is close to a teen mom and of course to teen mothers themselves. It is an uplifting book and does not at all dwell on the negative aspects on teen pregnancy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
If you only read one book on parenting read this if you are a teen mom or not! It covers all the basics and is a great read. You will learn a lot about pregnancy and childbirth. You will learn how to prepare for the birth with a birth plan and what to take to the hospital. The mysterious cries of your little bundle of joy will be made less mysterious as you learn about colic, feeding, changing, bathing and swaddling. The book walks you through each month of your child’s first year telling you what their capacities are, what types of toys are good for them, what to feed them, how much they should weigh and how tall they should be. It tells you what to expect from doctor’s visits. The book places equal emphasis on career and financial planning. It is expensive to raise a child and this book shows you how to earn enough money to live well and plan for the future. The author provides interesting examples of her own experience as a teen mom and given that she has a Ph.D. she provides a good role model!
