The Duke’s Dragoon (The Duke’s Guard Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 316 ratings

The Duke’s Guard: The men in black who have sworn an oath to protect the Duke of Wyndmere and his family from enemies that would stop at nothing to discredit and destroy him!

Mollie Malloy happily works for the Duke and Duchess of Wyndmere in the Lake District, until the day her head is turned, and her heart is lost to the heartbreakingly handsome member of the duke’s guard—Finn O’Malley.

Finn is tempted by lovely Mollie and cannot afford to be. When he can no longer ignore the slip of a lass, he requests a transfer to the duke’s crumbling tower on the coast of Cornwall. When she discovers Finn
asked to be transferred to Cornwall, she is devastated.

He sweeps back into her life when the head of the duke’s guard is injured. Finn struggles with his control—and the need to honor his vow to protect the duke and his family. Mollie cannot resist the smoldering desire in Finn’s emerald eyes.

Duty calls and Finn returns to Cornwall. He and his men struggle to protect those rebuilding Penwith Tower, while smugglers and wreckers ply their trade in the caves beneath the duke’s ancient tower. Rumors abound that the local excise official has been looking the other way and lining his pockets. The official decides it’s time to get rid of O’Malley—the same time Finn receives an urgent message from Mollie.

He returns to Wyndmere Hall to discover Mollie’s carrying his babe, but not ready to accept his proposal. She wants to marry for love—not for the protection of his name. He’s torn: should he leave his new bride in the safety of Wyndmere Hall—or would she be safer by his side?

It is only when the hangman’s noose is around Finn’s neck that he realizes the feisty lass has always held his heart.

Danger stalks in the night, but it will have to get past The Duke’s Dragoon before he will let harm come to those he has sworn to protect with his strength, his heart, and his honor.

If we have not met yet, I’m delighted to meet you! Here’s a little bit about me…

I have been writing romance novels for almost half my life, well at least for the last 30 years. I’m a diehard romantic and have to confess the broad shoulders and wicked glint in the brilliant green eyes of a stranger had my breath snagging in my breast, my heart beating madly, and my future flashing before my eyes. At the age of seventeen, I’d met the man I knew I was going to spend the rest of my life with.

I write Historical & Contemporary Romance featuring characters that I know so well: hardheaded heroes and feisty heroines! They rarely listen to me and in fact, I think they enjoy messing with my plans for them. Over the years I have learned to listen to them! I have always used family names in my books and love adding bits and pieces of my ancestors and ancestry in them, too!

I loved this book of Finn O'Malley one of the Dukes Guards and his love Mollie Malloy, A ladies maid and helper to the nursery. Mollie fell in love with Finn when she nursed him back to health when he was injured during the attack on the dukes home. Since he has been assigned to Cornwall and the rebuilding of Duke's crumbling tower. Also dealing with pirates and wreckers, including crooked tax collector for the Crown. Back at the Duke's home Mollie discovers she is with child. Finn returns, he and Mollie marry, after they spend 3 days together, they leave to go back to the Tower. They are attacked by the evil men working for crooked tax man, Finn is beaten and hauled away, Mollie is held in a shack, bound and gagged. Tremeyane one of Dukes men rescues her, and takes her to safety. Danger, intrigue and corruption all lead the Duke's men to rescue Finn after Mollie tries to rescue him herself. A very stubborn, determined lass is she to try and save her husband. This is an exciting story of good against evil, the talents of various men that work for the Duke, Captain Coventry and Gavin King of Bow Street Runner. Most of all it is a love story of two stubborn hardheaded Irish couple. Everyone will enjoy reading this delightful book.

Stand alone story with an interesting family of brothers, cousins and friends protecting a Duke and his family. The stories build off each other as the Guard find love and are in each story.

The H has been a bigger than life character in the series and I couldn't wait for his story. I wasn't disappointed in how his honor and loyalty were always in the forefront.

The h I had problems with and realize I'm alone in my feelings on her. She put not only herself but the Guard and others in harm's way, so many times that I started to dislike her. She lets horses loose which were needed for the Guard to rescue her husband and others. Yes, I know she was so in love with her husband, but to put others in peril because of your selflessness got old. The Guard are trained men and she figures she can do better than them?

Story is more on the Guard trying to outsmart the smugglers and other villains than romance.
I did feel a connection to the H/h and their lovemaking was filled with passion and love - heat level 3 out of 5.

Filled with suspense, violence, twists, intrigue and a unique storyline. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, little romance and steam. The epilogue 7 months in the future was sweet.

I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you tidbits to decide to purchase. I do recommend this story and author. Her stories are unique and I enjoy how she pulls you into her pages. (ljb)

I loved Finn and Mollies story. He is one of the Dukes guards when he met and fell in love with Mollie. When he thought she was a distraction he had the Duke reassign him one of his other estates.
Mollie could not understand why Finn wanted to be away from her. But when the two were together they were perfect. Mollie was with child and new she needed to tell Finn. With smugglers, crooked excise men, the pirate Ruan and much more happening in the town of St. Ives, Finn has his hands full. But when he finds out Mollie is carrying his babe he rushes back to the Ducal estate to marry her.
A wonderful story with a beautiful ending.

Ok - so every one of the books in the series about the Duke of Wyndmere, his family and relatives, and the Duke’s Guard has had someone and their minions out to do serious or complete harm to someone in the above mentioned groups. There is always a lot of challenges, serious angst and injuries. In my mind this one ratcheted things up quite a bit … seriously, a scaffold and hangman’s noose - in use!?! As I have come to expect, the storyline is riveting, the characters are on point (what is not to love about all of those Irishmen … and former English military men?), and the villains are ones you love to hate. Four of the Duke’s Guard have found strong women to love, as well as learning to balance duty to the Duke and personal relationships. That only leaves twelve more to go!

3 1/2 stars. I liked it, but there were a few things that I didn’t.

    *spoilers*

I didn’t like how Mollie would not keep her promises. Sometimes she would inadvertently cause more problems. I didn’t like the constant arguments between the guards, but that was probably a “guy thing”. I thought the story was slow until about halfway through when some serious action started. So, I liked the story, but I was also disappointed.

    4 1/2*STARS*
The Irish O'Malley and Flaherty brothers and cousins, sixteen in all, made a vow to guard and protect the Duke of Wyndmere and his family. There is trouble at Penwith Tower in Cornwall. Smugglers and wreckers are using caves on the duke's property for storing their goods. With a corrupt Excise Man and a pirate, it makes for a demanding job to try and control their illegal activities. At the center is Finn O'Malley and the lass he loves, Molly Mallory. A tempestuous relationship that becomes more with a closer connection. Love a strong willed woman willing to stand up to the man she loves. This series always has an interesting take on the development of a couple's romance, including some humor.
    Open bedroom door.
