Foothills Fae Academy: Book One Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 123 ratings

Disclaimer: This book has multiple POVs and is quite lengthy. If you enjoy multiple viewpoints and don't mind a longer read, you may enjoy it. However, this one will not be for you if you prefer short books or one or two POVs. I'm putting this warning here now so you're not surprised by the length or the POVs, and you can find a book that would be more enjoyable for you. The characters will be immature because they are thirteen. The characters mature with each book. The last two books, in particular, will be more mature, so discretion is advised when reading this series because this book is the most innocent out of the three, since they are thirteen.

Please read the trigger warning and disclaimer at the front of the book just in case you don't want to read it with the subject matter.

Welcome to Foothills Fae Academy, where four thirteen-year-old students embark on a journey to master the power of the elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Air. Ben, Amber, Ellen, and Michael forge a strong bond as they navigate the challenges of the school, but they soon realize that their training goes beyond preparing for adulthood – dangerous Dark Magic Wielders now threaten their world. As the four friends hone their abilities and embrace their true Fae potential, Ben and Amber discover they possess a special gift that puts them in grave danger.

Set in 1999, this thrilling fantasy adventure follows their quest to defend against the malevolent Dark Magic Wielders while honing their skills as aspiring Fae. Join them as they prepare to face an epic battle and unravel the mysteries that lie within the magical realm.

This is a coming-of-age story where the characters start at thirteen in the first book and mature into adults by the last one. The series leans more towards New Adult (NA) than Young Adult (YA) due to the content in the last two books, which might be inappropriate for certain YA age groups. While the first two books fit YA, the rating is specifically for the last two books, where the characters are adults, and I've written them to reflect that progression. Reader discretion is advised, especially for younger readers.

Callie Woodridge is a Canadian author, who loves writing fantasy tales and frequently loses herself in their worlds. Outside of writing, she finds solace in traversing hiking trails and cherishing moments with her two feline companions and family.

The Zartoto series, which was started shortly before the pandemic and was completed during subsequent lockdowns, showcases Callie’s storytelling prowess. An interesting facet of her life is her love for reading and indulging in Netflix binges when she’s not penning down her own narratives.

The realization of becoming a published author fulfilled a lifelong dream for Callie. Notably, she draws from personal experiences to craft character backgrounds, subtly weaving in her own past. The characters Amber and Tiffany, for instance, carry echoes of her own childhood, with Amber’s journey in particular closely mirroring Callie’s own struggles.

Amber’s encounters with bullying deeply resonate with Callie’s own experiences of feeling socially out of sync. This feeling often stemmed from her choice of clothing, which leaned towards the masculine side - a seemingly innocent preference that somehow managed to irk people to the point of subjecting her to bullying. Additionally, her ongoing battle with her unruly, easily tangled hair contributed to these moments of unease. Despite the relentless struggle, she stood firm against the temptation of pulling her hair up - a choice that had unfortunately turned her into a target for bullying due to her appearance.

Opting to let her hair cascade down, messy tangles and all, provided her with a sort of shield, a veil behind which she could discreetly conceal her face because people called her ugly. She felt it provided her with a protection from bullies, though it brought it on more instead.

Growing up, Callie learned the hard way that people thought bullying was some sort of character-building exercise. She’d hear all these clichés like “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” whenever someone tried to mock her. It wasn’t just strangers either – people even blamed her for being bullied because of her hair. It’s like they didn’t get how messed up that was. Even her own family joined the victim-blaming parade, suggesting that if she didn’t want to be picked on, she should just put her hair up and change her clothes. They took it a step further at one point, swapping out her comfy baggy clothes for more “feminine” ones.

Though not central to her narrative, it’s worth noting that Callie’s own experiences as someone who is autistic added an additional layer to her journey. Her resilience and creative expression through storytelling have enabled her to try to shine a light on real societal issues that resonated with her, including those she faced due to her individuality and looks.

Callie Woodridge’s journey as a storyteller shows how literature can seriously change the game. She weaves bits of her own life into her characters’ stories, all while shining a light on important real-world issues.

The Fae Realm isn’t all rainbows and butterflies – it’s intentionally flawed. Callie’s got firsthand knowledge of how messed up that mindset can be, thanks to growing up with it. She took that experience and channelled it into creating the Fae Realm, making it a showcase of just how wrong and damaging that kind of thinking can be. It’s like her way of throwing a spotlight on the issues that affected her and showing the world what needs fixing.

Magical Rollercoaster Told thru Multiple POVs

Magical Rollercoaster Told thru Multiple POVs
Callie Woodridge's "Foothills Fae Academy" is a rollercoaster of a novel that completely swept me away. From the very first page, I was transported into a world brimming with magic, mystery, and captivating characters. The story follows four young students - Ben, Amber, Ellen, and Michael - as they embark on their journey at Foothills Fae Academy. Their world is beautifully crafted, and the descriptions of the academy and its magical elements are vivid and enchanting. I especially loved the scene where the students first enter the training room; it felt like stepping into a dream. What truly hooked me, though, were the characters. They are so relatable, each with their own unique personalities and struggles. Amber, in particular, resonated with me. Her experiences with bullying and emotional abuse hit home, and it's clear that the author poured her heart into this character. As the story unfolds, the plot thickens, and the stakes get higher. The students face unexpected challenges and dangers, and the suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat. The author's note about the enemies not being who you expect adds an extra layer of intrigue, and I can't wait to uncover the truth in the next books. The writing style is engaging and easy to follow, and the pacing is perfect. The book is long, but I never felt bored. In fact, I was so engrossed that I didn't want it to end. If you're a fan of fantasy, magical schools, and coming-of-age stories, you won't want to miss "Foothills Fae Academy." It's a captivating tale of friendship, self-discovery, and the power of embracing your true potential.

A fantastic start to a great new YA series. Even though the book was long, I enjoyed having the multiple POVs. The characters were all very well developed, engaging and fun to get to know. The story is full of adventure, action, twists, turns and a few surprises. Callie Woodridge is extremely creative with her world building skills. I highly recommend reading this book.

Foothills Fae Academy is the first in the series where we’re introduced to a group of students entering their first year in a magical Fae school for elements and other powers. There are several POV’s of teenagers learning their powers while forming new relationships with their friends and family.

I was excited to read this one and loved the concept of the coming of age story, but it was a lot of repetitive and information, subplots and characters for one book.
It’s an exciting story of multiple realms that kept me interested and turning pages!

    This review might have spoilers.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. This is a multi-protagonist story told from each of the young fun characters point of view that come full of insecurities and family mysteries. The story shows us how they all meet and converge at Foothills academy.

This story has it all; Fae realms, magic, portals, fun classes, royalty, dark and mysterious unknown characters, a fight for equality among those lesser ranking students and the politics of those opposing.

The story also gives us romantic young love and all the cruel drama one should expect at this academy.

At Foothills Academy students do the tryouts for Hockey (that brought me back memories of quidditch in Harry Potter) The games came with
cheerleaders, dance, and an energizing audience.

It is written well without visible grammatical or spelling errors. This book flows at a slow-medium pace. It is a substantial read that includes a great epilogue.

Amber is a seemingly normal teenager, but she has a hard life with an abusive parent. Her life turns around when she learns that she has magic, and that she gets to go to a magical school in another realm! There she meets several other teenagers with various abilities; everything from shifters and vampires to seers and elemental magic users.

As the story progresses, there is a lot of typical teen drama with a little magical conflict. The "villains" are brought out pretty quickly, but each time seems very random and there are not many connections to the story with the villains until the very end of the book. It did feel realistic that the villains would use some of the students in their plotting, but that could have been explored more.

The story is told from various perspectives, although I found it hard to differentiate between them at times. Each teen deals with issues like bullying, low self-esteem, envy, selfishness, rebellion, peer pressure, and even sports tryouts. There is a lot of dialogue throughout the book, and that is the main way that the story is told. I think this is the main reason I found the various perspectives hard to differentiate between. It feels like everyone talks in every chapter.

Due to the young age of the characters (mostly between 13 and 16), the inner thoughts and dialogue are very immature. The things that are important to teenagers are definitely there: being accepted by peers, attraction and relationships, struggles with rule following, wanting to be treated as adults but without the consequences, etc. All of this made it a little tough for me to like the characters or connect with them, and I often found myself rolling my eyes. This was especially true for me with Ellen. Her character constantly mentions being pretty and not being allowed to date, and others also mention how pretty and perfect she is. I found it very grating. However, older teens and maybe younger adults might be able to relate and enjoy this type of character more than I did.

I did enjoy the descriptions of the different types of magic, as well as the setting. The author does a good job of painting a picture of what the magic does and what it looks like. I also enjoyed the way that Amber and Ben's relationship evolved in the book.

Overall this book was just okay for me. It has a good premise, and there are some good elements, but I think the book would benefit from an editor who could help the author be more succinct and use less dialogue.

Content Warning: although this book is told from the perspective of immature teens, I don't think I'd classify it as a middle grades book like similar stories are. There is some adult language used, mentions of sexual activities, and there are some dark themes.

This book is a whole world. There’s complex magic, vast landscapes, and a large cast of characters — who we get to watch grow up. But my favorite part is how the author doesn’t shy away from discussing bullying and discrimination in various facets. There’s a lot to keep track of, but it’s worth keeping track of it. Read this book!

Fun fun fun, this is a great coming of age, fantasy, mystery, story driven book that is quite the ambitious undertaking from the lovely author. Fun to read. Do recommend. 5/5

I love the characters they are real and relatable. In my opinion the world is rich and complex, but the first book tries to jam too much information into too short a space. This threw the pacing off for me.

I'm not super fond of the first person pov. It left me a little confused at times.

I will be reading the second book.

This is book 1 in the Foothills Fae Academy series. I enjoyed reading this book and getting to know each of the characters. This book is told from multiple point of views (Amber, Michael, Ben, Ellen, Carly). It is full of action, adventure, magic and a touch of mystery. The book is easy to read, follow and engaging (it is a rather lengthy book).
I look forward to reading the other books in this series!
There are multiple scenes with bullying, child abuse and neglect.

To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure that I would like this story - it was a little slow off the mark, and the tone was a little awkward at times. But I am really glad that I stayed with it! The story was really intriguing and I found myself relating to the characters although I have almost a decade on them lol. I know that a lot of people didn't enjoy the bullying within the novel; however, I think it was a necessary part of the storyline that helped build the characters. I was not expecting some of the twists and the ending left me wanting to read what comes next for Ellen, Michael, Jared, Amber, Ben, and the rest of the gang. I can't wait for them to explore the feelings they have for each other more in the coming novels, and I can't wait to see the other ways the author can manage to catch me off-guard. Plus, as a Canadian, I enjoyed the parallels that were drawn between the setting of the novel and our reality. I would have rated it higher; however, admittedly there were times when I was confused as to who was speaking because there were so many perspectives, and at times things felt a little redundant in my opinion. I still recommend this novel, and like I said, I look forward to what's to come :)
