Hung Out to Die (A Riel Brava Mystery Book 1) Kindle Edition
Riel, raised in Santa Barbara, California, has been transplanted to Nova Scotia where he is CEO of the Canadian Cannabis Corporation. It’s business as usual until Riel finds his world hanging by a thread. Actually, several threads. It doesn’t take the police long to determine all is not as it appears – and that includes Riel himself.
Pulled into a world not of his making, Riel resists the hunt to catch a killer. Resistance is futile. Detective Lin Raynes draws the reluctant CEO into the investigation, and the seeds of an unexpected and unusual friendship are sown. Raynes and Riel concoct a scheme to draw a confession out of the killer, but that plan is never put into place. Instead, Riel finds himself on the butt end of a rifle in the ribs and a long drive to the middle of Nowhere, Nova Scotia.
Why would someone want Norm dead, innocuous Norman Bedwell? A motive for murder is buried somewhere, and self-professed psychopath and cannabis production manager, Riel Brava, works with Detective Lin Raynes, aided by endless exotic coffee blends, to find it. As the noose tightens on an increasingly smaller number of suspects, who knew finding a murderer would be so simple? In the end, of course, it isn’t. It is a chunderfuck. Oh, and, Riel has one helluva wife

- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2024Riel Brava is my new favorite character. I loved his frank voice, his self-importance as well as insecurity dealing with other people's emotions. And hugging? Are we really doing that again? I'm not a psychopath, but I feel the same way. And I can't wait for another book starring this CEO of the Canadian Cannabis Corp and future president of the USA.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2023Hung Out To Die was well-written with a great cast of characters. Though Riel says he's a psychopath, in some ways he seemed more normal than others of the characters. The interactions between the characters are well done. I enjoyed the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2023Ms Moulton's characters amazed me - her descriptions throughout the story were spot-on for all personalities. I adored the monologue that went along with main character, Riel Brava.
The ending of the story brought me to tears as every string throughout the story was wrapped up like a beautiful bow. And the last line brought me a chuckle.
All of it made for a fast read when it's tough to set this kind of book down. I'll read more of her mysteries:)
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2023This novel was an absolute page turner for me. Moulton grabbed my attention within the first couple chapters and suddenly there was no way I could put the book down without knowing the next piece of evidence in the search for the murderer.
The dialogue between characters is entertaining, and I loved how each character's relationship with the narrator, Riel, grew as time went on - especially with detective Raynes. Additionally, the nods to Nova Scotian culture throughout the book are familiar and affectionate for anyone who's been there, come from away's like me and locals alike (donairs!!!).
If you love a good 'WhoDunnit' mystery novel, this one is sure to please. I highly recommend this book!

Hung out to Die, a made in Nova Scotia mystery, is lively, engaging, humorous, suspenseful, and an enjoyable read. I loved its unique, versatile use of language. The characters are authentic and the author makes insightful observations about human behavior. A page turner that can also be funny - brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun novel
Hung out to die by donalee Moulton is a fun read even though there is a murder. I loved the characters, particularly, Riel, the self-aware protagonist. Knowing his interactions with other people are artificial, he does his best to understand what he needs to do to get along. Some of the questions he asks himself about situations ring true for all of us who find ourselves in new situations. The best things about the book are the likeable characters, the engaging plot that feels realistic, and the colourful Nova Scotia setting. I hope Riel has more adventures soon.
