A Mermaid's Tail: Angels and Demons Universe, book five Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

Will saving her love destroy Verena’s future?

~ A shocking secret and a warning message to the past leaves teenage Mermaid-Angel Verena stranded in Egypt long before her time, right in the middle of a war against Persian occupation.

~Without hope of returning home, she tries to protect the message’s recipient from a horrible fate without destroying her own future.

~Falling in love complicates matters. Will she be able to protect the timeline and her heart, or will she be forced to make an impossible choice?

A Mermaid's Tail is a slow-burn paranormal coming-of-age romance novel, mostly set in Egypt around 500 BC, mixed with mythology, love and adventure. It's the fifth book in the Angels and Demons universe. It can be read as a standalone, though characters from the previous novels will make an appearance.
There will be war scenes with fighting, loss, heartbreak, and one non-graphic, moderate love scene.

Janina Carol (J.C.) Seal

I come from the beautiful city of Freiburg, at the foot of the Black Forest. I live in a small townhouse with my loving husband, my wonderful teenage daughter and my twenty year old tomcat. To earn a living, I work part-time as a technical assistant in cancer research. I didn't start writing until October 2018 but have always loved reading.

Perhaps you are wondering why someone from Germany writes in English? I still remember the first English book I ever read. When I was in the US as an exchange student at sixteen, I picked a random book in a public library and came across “Dragonsong” by Anne McCaffrey. It was the beginning of my passion for stories that go beyond the boundaries of the mortal world, and also the beginning of my love for a language so much more expressive than my own.

When I finally took the step from reader to author, the choice of language was not an issue.

Accompany me into my world of fantasy, adventure and mystery, paranormal and romance.

When I'm not writing or reading, I like to play computer games or watch crime series on television. I'm also on the parents' council of my daughter's school and a member of the garden club around the corner.

So, I didn't start this series in order, oops! The next book I'll read will be book 1!

I loved this story! I loved the historical aspects of it! A mermaid/angel shifter, loved that! I highly recommend this story! I don't want to say too much, so I don't give away any spoilers.

Angels, mermaids, Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Persians, and Ancient Caribbean islanders come together in an inventive tale full of adventure and intrigue. The MC is a mermaid who is bestowed with angel powers and wings. She also has the ability to shift to a cat and human form. It's a good thing because she is accidentally sent back in time and needs all the help she can get. The author dives deep into her ancient history research coming up with her back story for a few legends. There's one in particular that's wild. I won't spoil it for you, but it is quite clever. There are layers of powers from amulets and the angels posing as Greek gods that added to the epic style of the story. The author lets readers know their are war scenes and a moderate love scene. It is a very intimate scene, so parents of teens be advised. Some of my favorite parts were the martial arts training on the beach and a scene on the bottom of the ocean floor. Perfection! I recommend this entertaining book to mythology, action/adventure fans.

I am giving 4 stars based mainly on the creative writing and imagination of the Author AND that I enjoyed the previous books in the series. Rather than giving 3stars based on me failing to get myself 100% immersed in to the story.
Yes, if you love a bit of everything, this book definitely has it. Mythology, Egyptology, the Persian empire, higher powers, time traveling, and a teenager destined for greatness. And she stays true to her age and abilities throughout the story. Which is great writing and character detail.
And with a young MC you can consider this YA novel, really the whole series is great for ages 15/16 and up. She is a fiery fierce force of nature so "girl power" is definitely a theme here.

After initially being very confused in the beginning of the book, I ended up thoroughly enjoying this unique book, full of time travel, magic, ancient Egyptian mythology, and intrigue!
I wish some parts flowed a little more coherently (it seemed to jump around quite a lot, especially in the beginning). BUT once I had a good handle on the author's writing style and figured out the background of the characters a bit better, I was absolutely sucked in!

    What a unique book!

I received an ARC (advanced reader's copy) of this book- the review is entirely my unbiased opinion

5.0 out of 5 stars A time-travel paranormal romance mixing mythologies and cultures into a story with unexpected depths
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 14, 2023
A Mermaid's Tale is a coming-of-age story in the most unusual circumstances - Verena is half mermaid, half angel teenager who accidentally gets sent back in time to Ancient Egypt. Unable to get home, and desperate to keep her paranormal identity a secret, she needs to quickly adapt to the new world she finds herself in, or there'll be no hope of her ever returning to her friends and family in her own time.

Ancient Egypt was a violent place, and Verena must not only learn to live in an unfamiliar culture, but survive the war that's going on in the area she finds herself in. Not only that, she has the added difficulty of not changing the timeline, otherwise she might not have a future to go back to at all. This is easier said than done, especially as she makes new friends and falls in love.

The author sensitively handled the descriptions of war and the psychological effect it has on a young adult, and it really brings home the plight of so many people around the world who must daily deal with such horrors. The fear Verena feels for her new friends is real and believable, as is her desire to keep them safe at all costs.

This book is not only a treat for anyone interested in history and mythology but also has enough action, adventure, mystery, and romance to satisfy most readers of the paranormal romance/young adult genres. It is part of a series, and whilst events from previous books are mentioned, A Mermaid's Tale can be read quite easily without having read all - or any – of the previous books.
