After having read the author’s breath-taking technothriller “Malicious Deception” my expectations for its prequel “Girl Emerging” were very high and I was not in the least disappointed. Michael Hewitt succeeded in writing another suspenseful page turner. The protagonist’s journey from her protected academic environment into the real world presented her with unexpected challenges. But Essie Openwater, having earned two PhDs at Stanford University and eager to start her dream job at a national laboratory in the Pacific Northwest adjusts quickly to her new environment harboring a serial rapist and murderer who is determined to add this 21-year-old girl to his long list of victims. Hewitt is a master of building up the suspense, it is difficult to put the book down without knowing what happens on the next page. Just as in “Malicious Deception”, towards the very end of this fascinating story yet another big surprise is waiting for Essie which again puts her life at the highest risk. I am eagerly waiting for Dr. Openwater’s next ventures.

Until the significant villain dies, the book is one long scenario, an expanded sketch to make the action novel-length. The protagonist Essie makes several moves that seem more motivated to keep the plot going (hiking alone in a forest) than actions a savvy academic Native American doctor would make. Easy to read. With Rom-Com overtones, the men are youngish, handsome, and well-built. The most engaging part to me is the treatment of the slimy interoffice politics one finds in virtually any organization.

Dr Essie Openwaters is an interesting character, female, Native American, intelligent. Not in that order. When she is attacked while making a pit stop in a cross-country ride, she certainly didn’t expect it to change so much in her life. Essie seems to have trouble developing relationships, but finds success all the same. It’ll be interesting to see how her story develops.

"Girl Emerging" is a captivating fiction book that kept me engaged with its storyline from beginning to end. The story revolves around Dr. Essie Openwaters, a brilliant young scientist who unwittingly becomes the target of a deranged serial killer. What makes this book truly unique is Essie's transformation from a sheltered academic to a resilient survivor, discovering her hidden strengths along the way. The author skillfully weaves unexpected twists and turns into the plot, keeping readers guessing until the satisfying conclusion. With a strong female protagonist and a compelling antagonist, this book is a thrilling and suspenseful read.

I personally found Girl Emerging to be a super captivating and exciting read. Creepy Serial Killer stories are a somewhat guilty pleasure fascination to me and I found this story about a young Doctor who becomes a true survivor to be quite visceral and a page turner.

Hewitt did not disappoint! This was a phenomenal read. Definitely a page turner you won't put down. There was suspense, action, cliff hangers, plot twist, and even a hint at a budding romance. Looking forward to reading the other novels featuring Essie. Highly recommend.

I am just getting into thriller books and this was a great one to start with. The storyline easily goes from someone trying to set their life off on the right foot to being instantly thrown into a horrible change of events. Excited about the series.
