U.S. Marine Vietnam Sacrifice Kindle Edition
Reviewed by Doreen Chombu for Readers' Favorite
U.S. Marine Vietnam Sacrifice is a memoir by Raymond Isaac Lindsey, a Vietnam veteran, of his experiences after the war, written by his wife, Crystal Mary Lindsey. At nineteen, Raymond (Ray) fought in the Vietnam War against children recruited by the Viet Cong. The experience left him with physical and mental injuries. His therapy and treatment in Japan caused more harm, and when he returned home, he experienced symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Despite having a loving family and friends, Ray felt like he was in another world most of the time, which affected his relationships. He could not sleep because of his narcolepsy, and when he finally closed his eyes, he had nightmares. Ray eventually met Crystal, an Australian nurse whose father had experienced PTSD. The two fell in love, and she brought light into his dark life and helped him confront his demons.
Ray’s story is an emotional tale that raises awareness about PTSD. The book highlights symptoms of PTSD, which include anxiety, mood swings, depression, and sensitivity to sounds and smells. Ray experienced all these and more but did not let them defeat him. U.S. Marine Vietnam Sacrifice is non-linear, but it is easy to follow. It contains flashbacks from Ray's life before the war and the circumstances that led him to join the military. His sense of adventure and freedom was short-lived, and I felt terrible for him. I loved his diligence in trying to recover. He tried many activities like motorcycling, painting, playing golf, and joining singles groups to cope with his trauma. Most people experiencing depression and anxiety fail to try and end up committing suicide or being consumed by the darkness. The book is well written and organized, with pictures of Ray and a consistent format. The picture of the military boots and helmet at the beginning of every chapter was a nice touch. Crystal Mary Lindsey wrote passionately, and I appreciate her sharing Ray’s story with the world.
This story revolves around a young country boy named Raymond, who grew up in a small rural town in Tennessee.
Ray is a patriot and has always dreamed of serving his country.
In 1968 he was conscripted and joined the Marines to go and fight in Vietnam.
At first, he is excited to go, but soon he experiences war horrors. He witnesses death and destruction daily and is forced to participate in brutal combats that leave him emotionally scarred. As Ray’s tour of duty progresses, he begins to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
He struggles with flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety and finds it difficult to adjust to civilian life when he returns home. Ray’s PTSD affects every aspect of his life, and he has trouble sleeping and maintaining relationships.
He becomes withdrawn and isolated, using alcohol and medical drugs to cope with his emotions and pain.
Knowing God loves him is his life jacket.
The story of Ray is a beautiful reminder of the sacrifices that men and women make when they go to war, and it is also a testament to faith’s strengths for those who struggle with mental health issues.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them, lest we forget.

This is a story about a loving man whose life changed forever because of his service during the Vietnam War. It is a heartbreaking story of the life of Raymond. From his youth to the end of his life, he was plagued with ghosts from his youth and the war.
The author's writing style brought his story to life and touched my heart. It portrays Raymond's sacrifice for his country and also the strength of his wife in spite of the circumstances.
The story gives the reader an inside look into PTSD and mental illness that will help others understand the problems our vets struggle with. A well-rounded story filled with faith during a time of struggle. Highly recommended.

I only enjoy reading true life (non-fiction) books, and because I personally know both the author and this book's hero, I can confirm this factual and informative read is a TRUE account.
Very well written and concise - PTSD war-related trauma is VERY REAL and it leaves a trail of damage long after the war has ended, both for the survivor and their loved ones. It was a blessing for this heroic survivor to have had such a caring and experienced nursing wife in his life.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys true stories and those desiring to better understand war participation and its close affiliate: trauma...it should NEVER be!!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2025"U.S. Marine Vietnam Sacrifice" offers a personal look at the life of Raymond Isaac Lindsey, a Marine who served in Vietnam, as told through the compassionate lens of his wife, Crystal Mary Lindsey. This memoir dives deep into the emotional and psychological aftermath that lingered long after the war ended.
What I appreciated most was how Crystal weaves her husband’s story with raw honesty—his struggles with the horrors he witnessed, the toll it took on his spirit, and the quiet strength he found in faith and family. It’s clear this is a labor of love, written to honor his sacrifice and shed light on the often-overlooked struggles of returning veterans. The large-print option is a nice touch for accessibility, and the Christian undertones add a layer of hope that resonates with me. This isn’t a flashy war epic filled with combat scenes—it’s a quieter, more introspective story about what it means to survive and carry on. I’d recommend it to readers interested in personal veteran stories, especially those who value faith-based perspectives.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2025Ms. Lindsey does a wonderful job of deeply describing Ray's account of what he went through during the Vietnam War. The empathy that she shows for the pain he endured during and after the war is heartfelt and sincere. She also portrays his emotions in such a way that makes me feel as if I am there in the moment with him!
My favorite part in this story is the description of Ray's family farm. It shows how fondly he remembers his childhood home and how it seems to help him through difficult times. The other personal stories just resonate the soldiers' resilience and togetherness in the face of all they went through.
Look forward to more of Ms. Lindsey's books! Well worth it, especially for military history buffs!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2023First of all, I’m Raymond’s son Kevin, not Kane as the author called me. I did say that I had some people tell me that dad was a different person when he came back from the war. As far as, the suggestion that I made that my dad needed to be in mental institution is a blatant LIE. Raymond and I didn’t have the father son relationship that I’d hoped for. I completely understand that now, that had to do with his PTSD ,as I have aged. The blank stares, not being very attentive, and the distance that he kept is all clear to me.
The author made it sound like my dad was a recluse. I know first hand that he wasn’t. Dad was a very social person. He enjoyed being around people. There were numerous people that he was friends with. He liked to camp and boat on the lake with friends. Also, dad had many golfing buddies, which, he maintained friendships with until his motorcycle accident.
I understand that Crystal did sacrifice a lot when she and dad married. I was thankful of the care that she gave him and my grandmother. There other things that are not to be mentioned as to why my dad returned to Tennessee in December 2019. He did return to Australia in February of 2020 but returned after a week due to Covid.
The book gives an understanding to what some Vets struggled with having PTSD. I’m thankful for all Veterans and each of their struggles are different.
Happy Father’s Day dad!! I love and miss you!!
