Count of Thrace (Alpine Warrior Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 911 ratings

A crumbling empire, a mighty city facing destruction, and a small army of mercenaries trying to keep the enemy hordes at bay.

Leon Muller and his soldiers have been fighting for the Roman emperor for two years, battling the mighty Ottoman Empire to protect Constantinople. The ‘Queen of Cities’ has stood for a thousand years and its walls have never been breached. The emperor is confident he will be able to defeat the army of the Ottoman sultan in front of his city. But Leon, now an experienced military leader, battles in vain to inject reason into the fantasy land that is the imperial court as one hundred thousand Ottoman soldiers bear down on Constantinople.

After nine years of unbroken success on the battlefield, Leon and his comrades are now trapped in a besieged city with no hope of relief and hundreds of miles from Swiss lands. Will he and they survive the titanic battle that will decide not only the fate of the ancient Roman Empire, but also the course of European history?

‘Count of Thrace’ is the fourth volume in the ‘Alpine Warrior’ series – the story of Swiss soldier Leon Muller in the wars of the 15th Century when Europe was torn apart by civil, religious, dynastic and imperial conflicts. Maps of the Ottoman Empire and the city of Constantinople are available to view and download on the maps page of my website.

Peter Darman has cemented his place as one of the foremost writers of historical fiction ever! The Alpine Warrior series is flawless and the characters are unique and compelling. The "Count of Thrace" might be the best installment yet, and I only hesitate firmly giving it that distinction because all the previous books were worthy as well. I can only hope that Mr. Darman will find the time and desire to continue the story for as long as the magnificent "Dura" series, with at least as many books!

"Count of Thrace" is simply an awesome book!

I’m sorry that this wonderful series has come to an end. Mr. Darman balances dialogue and narrative very well and the story is told with skill and flair. My only criticism is that the book could have been edited much better.

Meticulous research, rousing action of the famous Swiss pikemen spotlights a fighting force not usually showcased, yet the Swiss are still in the employ of the Popes!

I read this book so quickly, it was hard to put down.

Richly drawn characters and finely worded writing makes me feel like I am in the thick of the novel.

I highly recommend this novel / series and the other historical fiction books by Peter Darman. All of the author's books make for an awesome reading experience. Thank you!

4.0 out of 5 stars good Story Lines & Credible Participants

I have now read the first four books and this review is for the four. I find explanations of how to vell a tree etc quite schoolmasterish and feel as though I’m a bit ignorant. Swiss democracy was a rebellious thing in Europe at the time and was a “quaint idea” but the historical content is well researched but the democracy part a bit overplayed. The stories are generally fast paced and keep one engrossed even though the word extant is a bit overplayed, simple English please. I give four stars to the combined first four books and now look forward to the next one which I hope has used spell checker more often than these ones. Like continuity in films I get annoyed at spelling mistakes and bad continuity as people get paid a lot for picking things up.
