4 out of 4 stars
Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Distance is not always a barrier to a determined heart bound together in love. Always Remembering by Kathy Kasunich tells a story of an undying love that conquers all trials and tribulations.
Helen was a pretty young lady who lived with her parents in a neighborhood in Pittsburgh. She wanted to become a nurse. Her dreams of attending high school were scattered by her mother, who vehemently refused to oblige her request despite all her pleas. To the delight of her sisters, who always teased her that she would be an old maid, two men started vying for her love and attention. Adam and Mike were both eligible young men who wanted a piece of Helen's heart. Mike happened to be Helen's brother-in-law. She met him during a family gathering and swore not to date him even if he were the last man on earth.
She dated Adam before Mike persuaded her to go on a probationary date with him. Helen was confused and indecisive but dated the two men for a while. She eventually fell in love with Mike, much to the chagrin of Adam. The love feast between the love birds was rudely interrupted by the breakout of the war. Mike had to travel overseas with only letters as their means of communication. Adam saw that as an opportunity to present an engagement ring to Helen. Should Helen grab this opportunity, or would their love stand the test? Read on to find out how Helen was able to solve this dilemma.
The book is divided into three parts. The first part is a narration of the romance between Helen and Mike. The second part revolves around Mike and his war experiences overseas. The third part is a continuation of the love between Helen and Mike. The historical account of the trail of the 42nd Rainbow Division during World War II was embedded in the book.
Each chapter contains the month and year that is being narrated. It guided me on the happenings that occurred during a certain period. The war brought about some downsides, including the government's ration system. Refugees lost their homes to German obliteration, and starvation and death ravaged the country. Mike's dedication to his work is worthy of emulation. He held on to prayers and the memories he had with the love of life to navigate through difficult times. I could finally breathe well when I finished reading part two of the book due to the grotesque description of the bloodshed during the war.
I particularly enjoyed reading Mike's letter to Helen. One could feel the love between them oozing out from the papers. It's nice how Helen and Mike resorted to prayers in every situation. Families can learn a lot from the habits of Helen and her family. I got to observe the little things that matter, like having family gatherings and taking a simple walk. There were a lot of emotional moments that added to the suspense and beauty of the plot. For the above reasons, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2024There are plenty of history books and soldier's memoirs about the European front but not that many about life for the families left to cope at home. This book uses a long series of letters written by a GI to his hometown sweetie to illuminate how important those relationships were to soldiers sent away for 3+ years with few if any leaves long enough to get home. It's not the usual WW2 shoot-em-up because the hero is a medic who is more often patching up the actual fighters. Life at home is shown in narrative form. It is almost unfortunate that the family, which was not well-off, is used to coping with whatever life throws at them, because the reader has to pick up on the challenges through off-hand comments (such as finally being allowed to buy a pair of shoes after many months). Since the author is the daughter of the key characters, it is not a spoiler to say that it all works out in the end after many challenges. In fact, the family's challenges after the war is over would make a whole other book also worth reading; the various GI Bill programs didn't do much for the vets who had to return to blue-collar roles and find ways to support wives and kids, but they managed somehow.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2024This was a book I could not put down. I usually don’t like books related to history, but it was an enjoyable love story relived through love letters. It was especially touching since the author was sharing her parents’ true love story. The author’s details made the reader be able to understand the life of a soldier during WW II. I highly recommend this book to readers who are looking for a sweet love story that follows the couple throughout their trials and tribulations during the time period of WW II. The best part of my experience was I not only loved the book, but the author is a coworker and friend!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2023My favorite genre, a true wartime love story. Always Remembering takes us through the tragedy and horror of war and the difficulties our soldiers faced not only during the fighting, but how terrible it was for them if they were fortunate enough to make it home safely. If you know someone who fought in World War II, you will really appreciate and enjoy this book. If you never knew anyone who was in the war, then you will learn just how things truly were during these times.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024Always Remembering is a romance story based on actual letters written by Mike to his future wife Helen. It's their story as their relationship develops while Mike is overseas during WWII in the 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division. It provides the human side with ups and downs during Mike's years in the Army. Kathy Kasunich wrote an excellent book using her parents letters during a trying time in American History.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2024A daughter’s tribute to her parents’ love story. Can love be sustained during a time when letter writing was the norm; when weeks can go by without a word; when fighting and death was ever present. This book is a peek into the everyday lives of families during WWII . Kathy’s love for her family and her extensive research are evident in this heart warming story.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2024“Always Remembering” is a WWII love story sharing the lives of characters before, during, and after the war. Set in various locations including Pittsburgh, US-based training camps, and Europe, the author paints vivid pictures of all. The story encapsulates not only the difficulties of those on the front lines, but also the struggles of those left behind with worry, rationing, and uncertain futures.
One of the things that separates this novel from other WWII love stories is that the author uses the specific words of the main characters—Helen and Mike— in Helen’s dialogue and Mike’s letters through much of the story. Mike was a prolific writer and a true romantic, even penning poetry and poetic prose while part of gruesome campaigns. His personality shines through in his letters with single letters ranging from serious discussions of soldiers home with mental problems to love to humor.
Although Helen and Mike were author Kathy Kasunich’s real-life parents, she doesn’t shy away from revealing emotions such as jealousy, impatience, and fear. Including these imperfections make her characters come to life, especially when they later regret having had those feelings. Those passages also remind the reader of how young and innocent many Americans were when the war broke out that would forever change their lives.
I’d highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to take a look into the lives of two everyday citizens during WWII and see how their love, faith, and communication during challenging times helped them forge a stronger bond in the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2024I loved this book! It follows the lives of Mike and Helen during WWII. This was before e-mail and Zoom, when letter writing was a true art form. The story documents their love story with letters shared between the couple and gives the reader insight into the good and the bad. It tore at my heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2023An excellent and very enjoyable book to read. It contains many letters written from Mike to his fiancee during WWII with stories to fill in the gaps. A true romance!! I purchased it from the author at a D Day reenactment. Great story!!
