Meet Rita Reed

Through her colorful and engaging children’s picture book series, Dogfish Tales, Rita spreads positivity, inclusiveness, love, and acceptance of all. As a parent she cherished time spent reading to her own children, connecting with them through the magic of books. She discovered that reading together could start conversations about important issues.

Dogfish, Just be YOU is the third children's picture book to be published in the Dogfish Tales series. Dogfish is a fun, curious, and well-received character by children that help to bring positivity into their lives, despite the difficulties they may face.

As an author, Rita believes that books can be the gateway into having meaningful conversations. She hopes that Dogfish Tales will support you and your child in those moments where your kid may need some extra encouragement.

About the Author

Craig Cartwright has worked in all aspects of the visual arts world including children's books, editorial illustration, character design, and film and commercial storyboards. His client list includes Pixar, Disney, Warner Brother (Looney Tunes), Fox (The Simpsons), The History Channel, The Family Guy, and Marvel. Craig received a degree in commercial illustration from Commonwealth University in Virginia. He lives in Venice, California.

Rita Reed lives in Southern California, where she studied art, interior design, and architecture. She enjoys spending time with her family and two silly, spoiled cats. Rita has found extraordinary joy in creating the magical Dogfish Tales series. Through these books, she hopes to spread love, inclusiveness, positivity, and acceptance of all.

Rita Reed is the Amazon Bestseller and award-winning author of DOGFISH Saves the Ocean, DOGFISH Stands Up to Bullying, and DOGFISH, Just be YOU!. Through her colorful and engaging children’s picture book series, Dogfish Tales, she spreads positivity, inclusiveness, love, and acceptance of all.

Growing up, Rita had a love for the ocean and the natural world. She would never miss an episode of The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, a series about marine exploration and conservation. But her real inspiration was her father, who was an avid scuba diver and would tell magnificent stories of his deep-sea adventures. Tales of his encounters with eels, giant octopus, whales, sharks, and many other sea creatures would captivate her, inspiring a connection to the ocean that would never fade.

Rita is passionate about children’s picture books. As a parent she cherished time spent reading to her own children, connecting with them through the magic of books. She discovered that reading together could start conversations about important issues. Years later, she dreamt of her character Dogfish, and was inspired to write meaningful and empowering stories for children.

With a strong heart for philanthropy, Rita believes in access to books for everyone. She partners with the non-profit organization, Imagination Storybooks, where Dogfish Tales will be available in video and audiobooks for blind, deaf and neurodiverse children.

Rita is a member of SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators), CIPA (Colorado Independent Publishers Association), ALLI (The Alliance of Independent Authors), and Goodreads. Rita resides in Southern California, where she studied art, architecture, and interior design. She enjoys spending time with her family and two silly, spoiled cats.

    This book was adorable. It introduces young readers to some of the animals that live in the ocean. It has wonderful illustrations so children can get a visual image. It also explains some traits that the animals have. Through it all, Dogfish gets a little down on himself because he sees how amazing the other creatures are. Eventually he learns to love himself after finding his own strengths.
