Joy Comes: A Story of Fatherhood by Dedrick Moone captivates with its profound and motivating narrative. Drawing from his personal voyage of growing up without paternal guidance and now embracing fatherhood, Moone emboldens readers to discover joy amidst life's adversities. Within these pages, we encounter Lamar, who was raised solely by his mother due to his father's substance addiction and his reluctance to be part of his son's life. Despite enjoying material abundance, Lamar experiences an intangible void that persists. As he matures, Lamar endeavors to reconnect with his estranged father, only to face unexpected disappointments. However, Lamar's journey unfolds as he transitions into adulthood, marries, and becomes a father himself, promising to embody the epitome of paternal dedication.
Joy Comes: A Story of Fatherhood stands as an illuminating literary work, resonating profoundly with countless young readers navigating similar circumstances. The vivid illustrations artfully transport readers into Lamar's world, fostering genuine empathy for his experiences. Amidst the story's poignant moments, the author astutely interweaves a resounding positive message of hope, urging readers to maintain unwavering faith and trust. This relatable narrative serves as an invaluable companion for young readers seeking to comprehend the complexities surrounding absent fathers, providing the much-needed guidance they seek.
I highly recommend this remarkable book to young readers yearning for answers and guidance. Moone's prose shines as a guiding light, imbuing readers with a sense of hope and fortitude that resonates long after the final page.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2023The beauty of this story is that someone will read it and realize that they are not alone in their experiences. I hope that it also creates space for empathy and consideration of how we interact with one another.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2023I received an ARC of the book from the author and thoroughly enjoyed it. It tells such a passionate story, regarding such a sensitive topic. The story is real, relatable, and doesn’t shy away from there being ups and downs involved. It gives hope to those of us who might not always feel hopeful. I am a single mother as well and am often told that my daughter is more likely to fail than succeed, even "lovingly" advised not to get caught up in early successes because she'd likely let me down so IMAGINE MY JOY in reading a book that details the outcome of two products of single parent homes!!!! Oh MY Goodness!!! Color me OVERJOYED! A definite MUST READ! I can't wait to see what else comes from this brilliant man!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2023This is a very sincere, emotional, open and honest story! The author allows the reader to take a journey through his childhood into adulthood and see the difficult trials that he experienced, but ultimately, these trials helped him to become the man that he is today! The author courageously shares his life story and shows how a person can triumph over any obstacle that they may face! This is a very encouraging book that I believe will help many!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2024Exploring the realistic struggles of fatherhood, Joy Comes tells the story of Lamar and his experiences with the challenges of being a father. The story starts with abandonment by his own father, and then provides a very honest depiction of Lamar’s own struggles: meeting his father at 16, dealing with the anger and resentment this caused. Even into adulthood, these struggles affect Lamar as he gets married, has a child, gets divorced, and into an eventual custody battle for his daughter. Lamar’s growth and transformation is illuminated at the end by his love for his new wife, daughter, and their blended family.
Though written as a children’s book, this story introduces many adult topics, such as drug use, divorce, and anger. It is deep and full of emotion. The reader can feel the struggles of the characters–struggles which they themselves may have experienced or know others who have. I appreciate the vulnerability of Lamar and his story; this honest truth telling has the power to help those who may have similar stories. While it may not be a light-hearted classroom read-aloud, it definitely has a place on the bookshelves of counselors, social workers, therapists, pastors, and anyone who helps others grow through tough times. The ending of this book provides hope and comfort, a little something that all of us can use.
