The Marquess's Perfect Match: A Historical Regency Romance (Misfits of the Ton) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 90 ratings

A tradesman’s daughter battles with an impoverished aristocrat.

A kiss never forgotten . . .
Known for his roguish behavior, Grayson Brentford, the Marquess of Harberton, overhears a young woman being cruelly jilted at a ball, so he gives her a kiss to boost her moral. But it’s a kiss that haunts him, ruining all his romantic trysts ever since. Now seven years later, Gray’s inherited a near-bankrupt title, and only marriage to an extremely wealthy heiress can save the estate. He’s willing to bite the bullet, and fortunately, an heiress whose fortune is large enough is in Town. Then he realizes the cotton mill owner, Miss Sophia Wyndham, is the mysterious young woman of years back whose kiss has rocked his world.

As the sole operator of her family’s cotton mill, Miss Sophia Wyndham has learned her lesson well—never trust a nobleman. She refuses to have anything to do with the Marquess of Harberton, who has admitted he must marry for money. He insists they are a perfect match, reminding her of a kiss she’s never forgotten. Despite her adamant refusal of his suit, his honest persistence touches a cord, and her heart softens toward him.

Amid the backdrop of rioting Luddites and attempts to kidnap her, Sophia finds herself relying on the comfort and support of Gray’s broad shoulders. Yet, despite her growing attraction for him, she cannot dismiss the fact that the beau monde will never accept a savvy business woman, no matter who the impoverished the aristocrat is.

Can he convince her otherwise?

A clean Regency romance with drama, intrigue and a happily ever after.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

As an avid reader, I became a fan of Georgette Heyer's Regency novels, then started writing Regency romance novels as a hobby. I particularly enjoy writing about strong, resourceful women in an age where it was thought that women were incapable of taking care of themselves and couldn't own property.

Kindle e-books have allowed me to grow as a writer. With each novel, I have made mistakes, but I have learned so much along the way. I like to read reviews from my readers and am thankful that they take the time to critique my work.

I am currently retired in beautiful Port Royal, SC, with my husband and our dog Sally, happily working away on my next novel.

Sophia operates her family’s cotton mill and refuses to have anything to do with a Marquess who has admitted her wants to marry her for her money. But he insists she’s his long lost love and refuses to take no for an answer. The characters are engaging, and the plot becomes suspenseful when Luddite uprisings involving her cotton mill puts her in danger. A good read.

This should have been a 4.5 Star review. My only quibble was the lack of a satisfying ending or "comeuppance" for the guilty. The romance/happily ever after was great. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

It seems hard to imagine that, in Regency times, a young woman with the intelligence and strength to run a business would be sneered at, demeaned, and considered unfit for society. Sophia has felt the shame of rejection and the scorn of society so when a titled gentleman wants to court her, she knows it's all about her wealth. A creative plot with inspiring characters.

You get the reader involved and then you just leave us hanging. What will happen to the mill....what happens to Clifford...is her brother behind this. We want answers.

Sophia had been jilted once by an aristocrat, so she wanted no part of a marquess's proposal, especially since he admitted he needed her money.
The characters are well developed, the story is well-written with a strong plot pulling in facts about the Luddite uprisings. Great dialogue and some intrigue.

Ok but terrible ending with so many loose ends, like there were enough pages so the story stopped. Also full of typos and incorrect words, with Gray (the live interest) becoming Gary several times. Not serious but irritating.

This book has everything: a solid romance with some obstacles thrown in, a look at a major period in England’s history, the beginnings of the Luddite movement to destroy machinery as the industrial revolution grows, and a nod to the gap between the upper and lower classes. Plus you get a young woman who owns a mill that comes under attack. Ms. Bennett’s writing is smooth and mature, as always, and her meticulous research adds depth to the story.
