The ending…I didn’t see it coming.
I’ve read and immensely enjoyed all of Read’s books. So when I was asked to read an ARC, I jumped at the chance. Little did I know there would be a subtle and seductive change in the writing style. The story opens with Cassandra and Leigh enjoying London and then swiftly moving on to Paris, Rome and Cairo in a whirlwind of intrigue, seduction and unsavory characters popping up before returning home to Melbourne. And to Cassandra’s real life. Yep, all is not well on the home front.Cassandra has built her persona to be very seductive, successful and independent for the world to see while inside there’s something else… This is a change for this author and I must say I rather liked this portrayal of Cassandra.I loved the intrigue and the skipping city to city with the descriptive passages of the sights, flowers, food and clothing. The pace is nonstop. The characters are fleshed out with the good and the faults. The world building is exciting and dangerous. The marrying of old legends and curses of ancient Egypt into the present day of 1956 was well done making for a page turner of a story. Obviously, the research was both extensive and meticulous. The ending…I didn’t see it coming.A Fast Paced ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Vengeance, mystery, ancient curses, greed, angsty romance… all this and more fill the pages of Wings of Death, and Read expertly wove them into a page turning story that kept me guessing! Set in the 1950s amongst globetrotting elites, I was drawn into the characters’ world and, through Read’s artistry, felt one among them. A gripping and bittersweet tale.

I so loved this book that I read it nearly straight through. It would have been one reading, but life got in the way. I’m a fan of Ms. Read’s work and was happily surprised by a new style and the darker and deeply psychological approach to Wings of Death. This has only increased my respect for her skills as a writer.
Based on the popular myth, that a curse brings death to those who enter the tombs of ancient Egypt, or handle the objects that have been removed, the author sets the tale in 1956 and brings a fresh sense of intrigue, mystery and excitement to these legends. The protagonist, Cassandra Bain, is a very successful fashion designer with showrooms in Melbourne, (her primary home) Paris, London and Rome. So this book has an international flair, with an understanding of the fashion industry. There are even scenes that take place in Cairo.

But as glamorous as Cassandra’s life seems, there is also sadness, and a hurt that takes it’s time to be revealed. Life has not evolved the way she had hoped. Cassandra is a complex woman, and often refers to herself as heartless, as do others. She does feel coldhearted and self-absorbed, but much more lies beneath the surface. There is a lover with a dangerous history, Leigh, and an estranged an appealing husband. Leigh introduces Cassandra to his dear friend, Professor Peter Trembath, an Egyptologist. He also is well developed and became dear to me. Then I must mention Cassandra’s secretary Nina, who is as fabulous and as complicated as Cassandra, and will remain memorable. There is a circle of friends and staff who each shine in their own turn. There are unexplained deaths, much suffering and the threat of a curse from a sacred and ancient object, a lapis lazuli scarab, a gift from her lover. Is the curse real? Who or what is behind these deaths? This is a story of passion, betrayal, revenge, love lost, self-reflection and possibly redemption. The ending was a surprise and very satisfying.

An enjoyable historical mystery. Love affairs, scarabs, and curses? It took a minute to really get into it, but it was a fun read. Would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic mystery!

What’s behind the bizarre deaths of the Egyptologists who plundered the Pharaoh’s tomb? Is it the legendary curse of the Pharaohs, or is it something more down-to-earth?

In The Wings of Death, Ellen Read gives us a more conflicted hero than usual in the form of Cassandra Bain, a successful fashion designer who treats others with disdain and who declares the scarab given to her by her lover Leigh takes the place of her empty heart.

Cassandra’s journey takes us through the high life of London, Melbourne, Paris and Cairo. As illness strikes her and those around her, she wonders whether the curse might be working its harm through her scarab. But then in Cairo she witnesses a shady encounter between the enigmatic Leigh and a local man and the story takes a sinister twist…

The Wings of Death is another fine, macabre mystery from Ellen Read. Cassandra is one of her most intriguing heroines to date. The other characters are also brought vividly to life, from Leigh, her mysterious lover, to her PAs Laura and Gina, the Egyptologist Peter, and her husband Steven – with whom she still has a tentative bond. I enjoyed this classic thriller and thoroughly recommend it to lovers of Agatha Christie!

5.0 out of 5 stars A tension filled read building to a shocking climax and an unexpected twist
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 30, 2023
A slight departure from this author’s usual style of writing. The Wings of Death is a grittier and darker read than the cosy mystery The Thornton series and illustrates the remarkable versatility of the writer. The beautiful fashion designer Cassandra Bain seems to have it all. The looks, the lifestyle, the lover. Yet underneath the fashionable and well-maintain exterior, Cassandra is dead inside. As a joke, her lover gives her a stunning scarab beetle pendant – which legend states came from the tomb of an ancient Egyptian magician – and is said to have replaced a missing heart.

The pendant is rumoured to be cursed but Cassandra pays no heed to such superstitious nonsense – until inexplicable illnesses and bad fortune begin to torment her and cracks appear in her perfect life. Moving within the high society circle of the 1950s, the plot takes us from London to Egypt and Australia, with Cassandra becoming ever more afraid and paranoid.

The tension builds to a crescendo until the shocking conclusion and a twist that I did not see coming. A thoroughly enjoyable five-star read for lovers of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Margery Allingham.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark mystery with a theme of obsessive passions.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 9, 2023
A dark, brooding mystery with a theme of obsessive passions. The story takes us from the world of high fashion and glittering socialites in Melbourne and London to the mysteries of ancient Egypt and the tombs of the Pharos.
Estranged from her husband after a series of miscarriages, Cassandra flits brittle and dazzling into the arms of a powerful and mysterious lover with a dark past. Cassandra likes to believe she is heartless and cares only for material things and a good time.
But dark forces swirl around her - jealousy, greed and avarice, triggered by a gifted Egyptian artefact. Cassandra is plunged into the lore surrounding the curse of the Pharos and as a result may lose everything.
Beautifully crafted characters, exotic locations and a tense, storyline full of twists and turns.
Who can we trust? Trust no-one!
