The Midnight Marquess: A Romantic Opposites Attract Mystery & Suspense Family Saga Regency Romance (Chronicles of the Westbrook Brides Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 157 ratings

A tragic past pushes a Frenchwoman towards a loveless marriage, until a secretive English Marquess challenges her beliefs in love and trust...

Aurelie Lemieux's belief in fairy-tale romances crumbled to dust with the untimely demise of her half-brother in France. Fleeing to England, she braces herself against a harsh world where survival outweighs matters of the heart. Resigned to a loveless marriage for security, her resolve wavers when she crosses paths with the dashing yet enigmatic Adolphus Westbrook, Marquess of Edenhaven. His piercing gaze tempts her to dream once more.

Adolphus, seeking refuge from London's high society's suffocating expectations, retreats to a serene coastal village. His encounters with Aurelie, a vision of beauty marred by sorrow, stirs a deep, unexpected yearning. Under the cloak of night, their clandestine meetings blossom into a connection too profound to ignore. Yet, doubt creeps in, tainting Adolphus's trust, as he begins to see Aurelie as just another opportunist in the marriage mart.

A catastrophic fire throws them together, peeling back layers of misconceptions and societal constraints. As they navigate through their complex feelings and the rigid norms of their time, they are forced to confront the question: Can the fragile love they've kindled withstand the harsh realities that threaten to tear them apart?

From the Author

Dear Reader,

THE MIDNIGHT MARQUESS is the third installment in my Chronicles of the Westbrook Brides Series, and I chose to have the story take place in the quaint coastal town of Lymington, England. I wanted this romance to occur outside traditional Regency settings and with fewer typical strappings associated with
le beau monde.

Though a lord and future duke, Adolphus Westbrook doesn't enjoy his position and status. He far prefers the anonymity he has in Lymington. Nonetheless, he has a strong sense of duty and responsibility and will always put his title first. So he believes until a midnight garden rendezvous with his intriguing French neighbor has him rethinking his priorities.

A French immigrant and refugee, Aurelie Lemieux has been thrust into the role of caregiver for her brother's children and an ailing aunt. Despite her difficult circumstances, she maintains an air of optimism and independence that I cannot help but admire.

Adolphus and Aurelie's road to happily ever after is slightly bumpy but not a perilous journey—except for an early morning fire that destroys their cottages. I hope you enjoy escaping into the romantic past with their romance.

Hugs,
Collette

The Midnight Marquess is the third in the series, The Westbrook Brides, by Collette Cameron. It certainly can be read as a stand alone story. While characters from the other book make a slight appearance, they are not intrusive.

Adolphus, is a Marquess first inline for inheriting the dukedom. He has lived his entire life with this in mind. He is quietly envious of his free wheeling brother who live their lives carefree. He has placed his dreams of traveling and exploration firmly on the shelf. He has allowed himself to enjoy ship building. This is what has brought him to the quiet seaside village of Lymington. On a whim he has bought a quintessential small cottage. He has not revealed himself to anyone while he quietly builds 3 ships. He so enjoys his late night brandy on the patio of his unnamed home.

Aurelie Lemieux Is his neighbor. She is a young woman who escaped France following the death of her half-brother who had been tried for treason, she fled to England with his two young children. Having left behind her brother’s wealth, she is living with her elderly, frail aunt.

Enter Antoinette, a haughty cat belonging to her aunt. It is the cat that causes Aurelie and Adolphus to have their first midnight meeting. Over the weeks they follow they feel the attraction. Adolphus believes her it be a title seeking woman. He is Lymington to escape such meddlesome women.

As tragedy strikes, Adolphus is forced to reveal his true identity. Aurelie and her family have lost everything. This tragedy is the beginning of their HEA. You will love their story!

The Midnight Marquess is quick read. I fell in love with the main characters, the children and the animals. I received The Midnight Marquess as an advanced reader copy. This is my honest review.

The Midnight Marquess is so titled because the Marquess meets his new neighbor in just such an hour. There is a cat, Antoinette, who is wandering in the neighboring garden and Aurelie Lemieux is trying to capture it. Of course, there is some destiny going on here, because this is an historical romance novel! This author cleverly designs many such instances in this story and they all work splendidly and are easily believable.

This book is a stand alone, but is third in the series Chronicles of Westbrook Brides. Take a look at the cover. The man and his expression perfectly suit Adolphus Westbrook, as he is the eldest son and heir to the family’s estate and fortune, along with all the responsibilities that come with it. That’s the expression that suits this gentleman. No nonsense. Doubts abound with the sweet and sincere neighbor, however, because of this.

Aurelie also doesn’t presume that she should be a romantic interest to this class of man. She is devoted to raising her orphaned niece and nephew and helping her aunt. What does happen is a fire. She is forced to be together with Adolphus, to help each other and to see the real people that they are, not just their positions in life. Will that be enough to nudge them into a romance? You will have to read this book. You will not be disappointed!

The next installment of the Chronicles of the Westbrook Brides Series does not disappoint.
Adolphus is heir to the duchy of Latham, and has taken that responsibility to heart, severely restricting his life, freedom, and personal interactions. So much so that he struggles to have close meaningful relationships with anyone, including his family. Fearful of a societal misstep and being caught and forced to wed someone not of his choosing, he has perfectly erected barriers he hides behind. Until one night in Lymington….
Aurelie was forced to flee France with her orphaned niece and nephew, and seek shelter with a distant relative in England. Their lives have changed dramatically, but Aurelie maintains a positive outlook despite the straitened circumstances. Faced with the necessity to economize further, her small family moves to her aunt’s cottage in Lymington, which just happens to share a brick wall with Adolphus’ cottage.
A chance encounter under a starry sky at midnight leads to a roller coaster of emotional interactions as Adolphus struggles between duty and desire. We walk with our hero through his recognition that the way he’s lived his life up until he meets Aurelie has been stifling. He learns he has to be open to rejection, pain, and vulnerability to truly live and find his happiness.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Adolphus’ character development as the book progressed, and Aurelie’s combination of strength, determination, and resiliency that helped allow their relationship to blossom and flourish.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gentle and satisfying read

This charming story takes place in the small seaside town of Lymington. Adolphus Westbrook, the Marquess of Endhaven has taken himself to a terraced cottage as an escape from his busy life and all those expectations that a Marquess might face in his daily life. His first encounter with Aurelie Lemieux, his next door neighbour, happens as she looks for her aunt’s cat that has escaped from her house. Both Aurelie and Adolphus come to look forward to their midnight meetings, and become friends. But, as often happens in life, the course of true love doesn’t travel smoothly. Aurelie is the sister of a man executed for treason and had to flee her beloved France with his two young children and then to live with her kindly, but elderly aunt, who really doesn’t have the wealth to support them all in style - hence their living quietly and frugally in the cottage.
She doesn’t feel that she is good enough to pursue anything with Adolphus and he, in turn, feels that she might only be in search of a wealthy husband - something that he has and continues to face with silly mamas and their daughters. One, a Miss Mountjoy, makes a play for Adolphus, but the advice of his brothers when he returns home for a visit, makes him think about what he wants in a wife and not what might be expected of him by society: Would he not prefer to marry for love and have a wife he can live happily with?
I enjoyed this gentle story. It shows that we can have dreams that come true and that everyone can love and be loved no matter their background.
