Against Her Will Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 41 ratings

Mona Mason's life is disrupted after her husband, Jonathon, suddenly dies from a freak bike accident. Her latest novel, Celestial World, has just been released, and she's about to go on a book tour. Her estranged niece comes back, claiming her inheritance. Mona is overwhelmed and believes she's having a heart attack and faints at Jonathon's funeral reception.

After waking up disoriented in a strange bed and an unknown apartment, Mona discovers her niece Chelsea and a mysterious group of doctors have taken over her care. They tell her she's had a breakdown after the death of her husband, Jon, and has been admitted to Peaceful Shelters for observation. Celestial World has been assigned to Chelsea, whom she hasn't seen in ten years. And her phone and computer are gone, and she's unable to call her publisher, best friend, or publicist. Fans have been told she's staying at an undisclosed resort, grieving for her dead husband. No one believes her when she says she is held against her will, not even her sister.

Mona finally breaks free from being trapped for weeks, escaping to a local Palm Springs mall. Exhilarated, she calls an Uber but realizes her driver is Jason Dean. She's been kidnapped by one of her most zealous fans. All she wants is her life back. And the nightmare continues for the best-selling sci-fi author of the Universe trilogy, having just fled the retirement home Peaceful Shelters.

This formulaic and trite book read like a teenage fiction novel. The conversations were stilted and the actions and simplistic thoughts of the characters were simply unbelievable. Reading this novel felt like slogging through a muddy field. Should have closed it.

There is so much going on in this book. I don’t even know where to start. The beginning opens up with a funeral (that always piques interest). But then it soon became one of the wildest stories I have ever read. The plot is kind of all over the place, but still really entertaining for the most part. There are also a lot of characters.

I liked that the chapters are pretty short and manageable, at least in my opinion. And it is very well-edited. Thought the protagonists’ thoughts at times seem immature. But perhaps this just how her character is. All in all, there are a few downsides, but for the most part I did really enjoy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gripping plot

"Against Her Will" by Cynthia Kumanchik is a gripping and intriguing read.
The story revolves around Mona Mason. Her husband dies in a terrible bike accident. While she is suffering from this loss her life takes a wild turn. Her estranged niece enters her life and takes control of her. The whole plot revolves around the protagonist and her struggles to reclaim her life.
The plot is simple and written in an uncomplicated language. Despite intricacies the author has done a wonderful job by putting all the pieces together and pulled the story in a grasping manner.

2.0 out of 5 stars A good idea but badly executed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 6, 2023
It’s not all bad news. The first couple of pages were good and I thought I was going to be hooked from the start. Then it went downhill, and kept going.
The storyline could be really good but it goes off on a tangent too many times so things are missed out or cut short and don’t always make sense.
There are many grammatical errors: she instead of the; fund instead of find; they instead of then, along with sentences that have extra or missing words.
The story itself does not flow due to many blindingly obvious errors. E.g. Mona had no phone yet her phone vibrated in her pocket. Her caregiver, Bree, was day off yet appeared with Mona’s lunch. The days at the beginning of chapters don’t add up. At one point it read that she’d been at the care home for a couple of weeks then a few chapters later it said a week. Mona was told maps aren’t given to residents then later she finds a map in her room. Some of the conversations start out okay but are cut short and others have no substance or serve a purpose to the book.
