Melonie is a witch with a problem. Golatch, the goblin king, cursed her with an ancient virus that substantially reduced her power. The only cure for the mystical disease is his death. But a three-hundred-year-old goblin will be hard to kill, especially with limited abilities.

When the goblin army invades Melonie's home in Rustic Acres, a telepathic cat and a wise old raven enter the battle to help her protect the little people who live there. But chaos erupts when an energetic pixie complicates the plan.

Writing in a variety of genres, Black's character driven stories rarely turn out quite the way the reader would expect. The author combines imagination and experience to weave dramatic plots with believable characters in descriptive settings, whether contemporary or supernatural.

Those familiar with her prose can attest to her fascination with the paranormal. Even when it isn’t the basis of the plot, it is not unusual to find a touch of the supernatural in her books. Occasionally, the reference is so subtle, the reader could miss it.

With a passion for animals, the author includes a four-legged character in most storylines, even if just a cameo appearance. Two of Black’s novels, “Race into Murder” and “Ride into Romance,” draw on her background as a racehorse owner. Her experience at the racetrack supplies realism to the setting, the races and the characters.

Black lives in the United States with her husband, and two alien creatures disguised as cats. While each of the furry critters is unique, one of them is rumored to be ET’s second cousin. The rumor, however, has not been confirmed.

I admire Karen Black’s ability to write exceptionally within many genres. This fantasy story is as wonderful as her other stories and novels. Spells written in Heroic Couplets worthy of Chaucer, a true Homeric Epic Narrative with an exciting world peopled, um, inhabited, by fairies, pixies, cats, ravens, witches, and of course those awful Goblins Golatch and Golock (great names!). Expand this, please, to full length!

Karen Black weaves as tale of magic and the goblins who try to destroy it in this compelling tale of Rustic Acres, a place where fairies and other imaginary (or are they?) creatures seek to live in peace.. Melanie fights of the king of the goblins, Golatch, who's upset with her for having killed his brother during a fight that was in self defense. Melanie has lost part of her powers due to having saved herself during that battle. Golatch wants to kill her and her "telecat," Owen. He brings armies of goblins to Rustic Acres to cause trouble.

In calling for assistance from her ancestors and other protectors, Melanie speaks in verse. Golatch does the same as he curses her and promises to kill her and everything she cares about. How will this head-to-head confrontation turn out?

This author's writing is just as magical as the tale itself. This story would be just as fascinating if read to a group of elementary school children as it would be if a group of adults tackled it. This author writes in many different genres, and this one is just as successful as her others. I would recommend this story for anyone over the age of seven. Great work.

Rustic Acres by Karen Black is a story of revenge where evil wants to conquer good. It's a story set in the fantasy land of Rustic Acres. The leader of the Fae has summoned all the inhabitants together to inform them that evil goblins are planning to attack and destroy Rustic Acres. Golatch, the king of the goblins, is seeking revenge for the death of his brother by Melonie, the witch, and protector of the forest. Her powers are now weakened since that earlier battle, and she may not be strong enough to save everyone.

Pixies, Leprechauns, elves, wood nymphs, fairies, ravens, and other inhabitants of the forest all band together to help fight the oncoming horde and to save their land. Magic dust and weak incantations are not enough to defeat the hungry goblins. They are in desperate need of help. Will they survive?

I was pulled into the story from the beginning and thoroughly enjoyed it. I did, however, come upon a couple of typos along the way. This short story is recommended for elementary students, but adults will also be fascinated by this compelling read.

This was such a fantastic short story. Melonie is a witch who angered the goblin king, Golatch, when she killed his brother. Golatch cursed her with a spell that stole her powers and then promised to return one day to kill her. When that day comes, the community of Rustic Acres vows to stand by her side and fight until the end so she won't fight alone.

This author does such a great job with mystical creatures and animals in her stories, and this one was no different. I really enjoyed the interaction between the various creatures and how they were willing to come together despite their differences or animosities toward one another.

For a short story, the characters' personalities are well-developed and even bring out several laughs despite the dire circumstances. I especially love the fearless, little pixie, Kiki. This is a story both young and old can thoroughly enjoy.

In RUSTIC ACRES, Karen Black takes us to a magical community where fairies, pixies, elves, magic cats, and other creatures live together in harmony. Melonie, a beloved witch who uses her powers to protect the inhabitants of Rustic Acres, has lost a large portion of her powers to a spell cast by the goblin king when she killed his brother to save a kitten. When the goblins attack in force will Melonie and her friends be able to drive them off?

I was captivated from the beginning by the delightful characters in this story, like Pixie Kiki, a tiny creature with the courage of a werewolf, Sofianna, a fairy the size of a dragonfly with a powerful thump, Owen, the telecat who communicates telepathically, and Melonie, the witch who casts spells in rhyme and who loves and protects the Fae.

The plot is equally enthralling, with rising tension as the Fae prepare for battle with the goblins. How can they beat the giant, smelly beasts who love to eat small creatures? Especially with Melonie’s weakened powers.

Reading this was a treat for the senses. I highly recommend it for young readers and for those like me, who love a taste of fantasy with their afternoon tea.
