Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ride Into Romance is the quintessential escapist read, with all the elements that make romance such an enduring giant in the literary genre. There is the push-pull, will-they-won't-they dynamic, the expected angst, and all the feels to keep readers turning pages into the night."The Book Review Directory.

"A lighthearted love story that carries hope, forgiveness, and a promise of accomplished dreams...Ride into Romance is an uplifting love story suitable for readers who love modern westerns, cowboys, and friends-to-lovers tropes." Independent Book Review.

"A story of a woman torn between her career and the traditional values of a relationship. An easy fun read, but so romantic that your heart will swell for the true hero of the story. Just one of those "I can't wait to see how it ends" kind of stories." International Review of Books.

"...a sweet romance revolving around horses ... beautifully crafted and written ... with intrigue and conflict."
Readers' Favorite.

"...captivating story of a woman who is faced with a difficult choice. Black's writing style is powerful and poignant, and she has a unique ability to evoke a wide range of emotions in her readers."
Midwest Book Review

"
Ride Into Romance captivated me from page one. The horse racing world is new to me and I found that it and the sweet slow-burn romance between Maggie and Johnny made me a happy reader... Every character was believable and added depth to the beautifully spun tale."Books Go Social

From the Author

Drawing on a background as an avid horse lover and a thoroughbred racehorse owner, I wrote Ride into Romance with a backdrop of equine sports. It is set at the same fictitious racetrack as Race into Murder and the novels share several characters, as well.

In Ride into Romance, Maggie grew up around quarter horses, as did her best friend, Johnny. But when Maggie became involved with David, a thoroughbred owner and bloodstock agent, she was captivated by the high-strung racehorses and the excitement that surrounded David's association with them. David and Johnny are as different as the two breeds of horses. One is dependable and easygoing, while the other is unpredictable and headstrong. Maggie, however, is a combination of both. She's stubborn when she sets her mind, loyal to those she cares about, and determined to live her life her way.

Cowboys and romance are an age-old partnership and for as long as I can remember, girls have loved horses. Ride into Romance tells the story of a woman's two loves, horses and the man she finally chooses. Although there are a few instances of the darker side of both racing and romance, my intent was to write a story that is uplifting and ultimately makes the reader smile.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Writing in a variety of genres, Black's character driven stories rarely turn out quite the way the reader would expect. The author combines imagination and experience to weave dramatic plots with believable characters in descriptive settings, whether contemporary or supernatural.

Those familiar with her prose can attest to her fascination with the paranormal. Even when it isn’t the basis of the plot, it is not unusual to find a touch of the supernatural in her books. Occasionally, the reference is so subtle, the reader could miss it.

With a passion for animals, the author includes a four-legged character in most storylines, even if just a cameo appearance. Two of Black’s novels, “Race into Murder” and “Ride into Romance,” draw on her background as a racehorse owner. Her experience at the racetrack supplies realism to the setting, the races and the characters.

Black lives in the United States with her husband, and two alien creatures disguised as cats. While each of the furry critters is unique, one of them is rumored to be ET’s second cousin. The rumor, however, has not been confirmed.

I always learn something from the writings of Karen Black. If I already knew some of those then I marvel at the truths contained in her books. How I’d love a chance to make friends with a horse! I was traumatized at age 16 when I went with friends to rent a horse from a stable for an hour My horse kept trying to bite my foot and finally, after being terrorized (my friends thought it was funny and offered no help) we came to a pond and my horse almost threw me off, as he splashed into the pond and drank. Thirsty! He was merely thirsty! I trust Karen Black’s life reality so when I read about how horses respond to kindness, and how intelligent and social they are, there is no doubt that horses are as wonderful as my dogs. That is one of the exciting truths in Ride Into Romance, the author’s newest novel. The horses are as alive and full of character as the humans. Another is how we women can love our homes and mates, but many of us also love our jobs and after 60 years of consciousness-raising in the feminist world, we should be able to give ourselves to a career—without guilt--as men have always done. Another truth is, do not settle! There are wonderful mates out there for us if we only keep searching. Sometimes they are disguised as the boy next door and sometimes they are from a different culture, but do not give up. Romance is still alive, even in our technical world. And although Romance novels depict beautiful people, we already know that every one of us is beautiful and deserving of a loving mate, right? Absolutely! And so the main character is so relatable. She actually cleans out stalls, up to her elbows in manure, and there is never a sense of me vs. the beautiful people. I enjoyed this book so much and look forward to future works by Karen Black!

I was leery about getting into RIDE INTO ROMANCE by Karen Black because I'm not a fan of romance novels. But now that I've finished the story, I can gladly say that it was not at all what I expected. Instead, I found it somewhat educational, as the story followed Maggie around racetracks and the rodeo circuit. I learned a little about both events and the sacrifices and dedication necessary to own racehorses. I also learned that horses understand English. At least, it seemed that way when Maggie spoke to them. She'd been around horses all her life and could easily control the most stubborn of them with kind words and encouragement. It was as if she could get into their heads. Her dream, all along, was to be a thoroughbred jockey, and it was time to follow her dream. Only her boyfriend, David, an influential and wealthy horse trader, stood in her way.

Did you ever have a close friend of the opposite sex, one that you grew up with and have shared your most intimate secrets with? Johnny was such a friend to Maggie, and not long ago, he moved to the West Coast and was now raising thoroughbreds. When Maggie calls Johnny and explains her situation, he offers to help her move and settle in on the West Coast. What Maggie didn't know was that Johnny had been in love with her all along.

Maggie leaves David and relocates to the West Coast. Once settled, Johnny uses his influence to get her a job with a well-known trainer. Her dream of becoming a successful thoroughbred jockey was coming true. However, David wants her back, and Johnny wants Maggie for himself. There is an altercation, and later, both men are seriously injured. How does it all turn out for Maggie? Read the book, you'll be glad you did.

The story is easy to read and flows well. Although I encountered some errors, I still give it four stars. It is highly recommended.

I don't normally read cowboy books, but I do enjoy stories by this author, so I figured I'd take a chance. Maggie Austin is a female jockey who upends her life to travel to California and race thoroughbreds. She breaks up with a man who treats her like his property and moves closer to a childhood friend who has always been in love with her. While both men vie for her heart, she is focused on creating a place for herself as a jockey.

This is a sweet story with great characters. The author does a wonderful job of creating unique characters who are full of personality. Her descriptions at the stables and during the races were spectacular, and I felt that I was there watching the race. And I loved how Maggie found her happiness.

There was a bit of head hopping. I believe the author was going for third-person omniscient. I think I've gotten used to clean separations of POVs, so it threw me off a bit. And there were a few small errors but nothing that pulled me out of the story. If you enjoy cowboy(girl) stories and romance, I think you'll enjoy this story.

I love how Maggie finally chose to be her own person. She knew what she wanted to do and went for it. And in doing that found not only herself but love right in front of her face
