This was a wonderful experience. The creativity combing Dracula and Beauty and her Beast together to create a new world with other elements added in was beautifully done. Dracke had to work a little earn his way into my heart, but once he was there, no turning back.

This was an amazing read. Sad thing about it that I could not put it down once I started reading. I love this version of the beast being a vampire, setting a whole new environment to the setting. I thought it was a bit quick at first, but BOOM, did it hit hard once I got settled into the story. It's a great collection for you Beauty and the Beast lovers out there!

After her father is taken prisoner for stealing from a cursed prince’s castle, Bellamina chooses to take his place and serve his sentence. What starts as a cold, callous relationship between prisoner and captor soon blossoms into a steamy romance. But Mina is conflicted. Overwhelmed by grief from her past, she feels unworthy of love. Only by overcoming her sorrow can she find peace and break the many curses that dominate her life.

It’s the tale you know and love, but with so much more magic (and spice galore). I loved this author’s take on what has always been one of my favorite stories, and the addition of vampires and fairies only added new layers of fun and mysticism that made the book that much more enjoyable. While I did get frustrated with Mina’s character at times, I thought this was a testament to how well the author crafted her characters and made them flawed and believable. Great book — can’t wait to read more by this author!

I love finding a new take on a Disney classic, especially if it’s a little dark and a little twisted. And Kingdom of Forgotten Curses did not disappoint as it blended Beauty and the Beast with Dracula. How cool is that?

However, I won’t lie and must admit I did struggle with this book. While the story is interesting with its twists and turns, I couldn’t really connect with Mina. I won’t go into detail because I don’t wanna dissuade any readers, but also because everyone has their own tastes in books and this is just one person’s opinion.

Alas, the story had its interesting aspects and was still very much an interesting read.

Let me preface this by saying I was incredibly excited about this when I stumbled across it months ago as a preview on tiktok. Two of my favorite stories tossed together has a huge amount of potential. Which is what this had, potential. For that potential I am adding one star. This story is a combination of every big tag from A03 you could come across in one setting, and they are done poorly. Major life atlering events are resolved in one page, sometimes one paragraph. Small blow ups? Get ready to ride that again and again for multiple pages in a vacuum of chaos and repeat offenses. Descriptions? There have been advertisements for toilet paper that were more gripping. The FMl description is multiple chapters in and consists of two sentences, otherwise this is the blankest FML you can stumble across. The ML seriously feels like three different people as you go through and there is no solid catalyst for his change. I'm not revealing spoilers here because honestly I am betting this review will already be flagged if not removed, but do yourself the favor and get this one for free, or second hand and see if you really want to buy it afterwards.

One of the best retellings I have read this year. I love the dynamic of the story and how the author incorporated numerous things in the book. She has a lot of references that make it good. There also some twists you won’t expect. Definitely captured my attention and was a good read. Can’t wait to see what the second one will be about.

Kingdom of Forgotten Curses by Autumn Kaufer. Imagine if Dracula was the Beast in Beauty’s story. What if Beauty was more than just human? Perhaps the faery made a mistake and regrets cursing the Beast. Maybe love needs to die, souls need to be crushed before legends can be reborn.

We follow Bellamina “Mina” Renfield, a former governess with a heart of gold and a soul full of grief. Life hasn’t been kind to her, and the fates will ensure her future is no less painful. Between losing the child she swore to protect against an uncurable illness and the betrayal of one of her friends, Mina lost all hope.

When her Dad doesn't come home on time, she knows something is wrong, even if her sisters berate her for being dramatic, she goes out to look for him. Does she find her Dad? She does, but she also finds a lifeline she wasn’t expecting. She finds a part of her that was unknown and a secret story to her true self.

Dracke has been corrupted by the curse, his heart cold and unmoving like the mountains. It wasn’t his cross to carry, but after so long, the heaviness of living in this eternal hell is too much. After incarcerating a thief for stealing a rose, he was ready to let him die not to exchange him for a woman with more courage than common sense.

Can he resist the hope that blooms when he is next to her? Does he truly have what it takes to break the bonds that bind his soul and let the monster run free? Or will he seclude himself and accept that monsters don't get a happy ending?

The book reads beautifully, imagine reading a movie script with more emotions. When the author said her inspiration was Beauty and the Beast by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve meets Dracula by Bram Stocker, she wasn’t kidding. The references to both books and also to the story of Vlad Tepes aka Vlad Dracul III, were spot on. From the names to the more formal English vocabulary, to the subtle words in other languages.

You can sense the unworthiness that both main characters feel. It grows from a fairy tale to a devastating realization that hearts don’t heal how they would want them to heal. Getting to that place where they are both willing to give everything but also put their foot down and grow as individuals, was hard won. Personally, it reminded of the movies Beauty and The Beast (French/2014) and Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Dark Beauty And The Beast Retelling With A Twist
Reviewed in Germany on February 26, 2025
    "I told you I'm broken."

DRACULA meets BEAUTY AND THE BEAST in this magical retelling by Autumn Kaufer. Fast-paced and full of banter, this book draws you right in and keeps you turning the pages.

The story was really enjoyable, though heavy on dialogue—which I loved, but someone else might not. Both protagonists are dealing with a heavy load of trauma and pain, but they slowly work through it together.

I liked the fae twist toward the end and found myself in love with the fae and their lore, though I feel like too much information was explained in too few pages; I was yearning to learn more about them.

What I didn't enjoy as much was the constant back-and-forth between the main couple. I understand that they were dealing with a lot in their minds, and Mina struggled with her own grief and trauma, but she kept being cruel to Dracke, even though he kept reminding her that he was there for her and that he wanted to help her.

Overall, it was a great book that I highly recommend to all romantasy lovers, especially BEAUTY AND THE BEAST fans.

P.S. I'll never see strawberries the same way again! ><

4.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing fairytale twist
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 18, 2024
This was the Beauty and the Beast x Dracula x gothic fairytale retelling you didn’t know you needed to read. A gothic tale as old as time.

It took a while to get going but once I was in, I enjoyed the book. I loved the concept of the beast in this retelling. I would never have pictured it as it was portrayed, it was unexpected and provided a refreshing twist.

This book had spice, plenty of plot twists and was full of secrets. It was overflowing with grief, angst, and betrayal. It was a slow ride on the emotional rollercoaster; with stops at betrayal beach, heartache hotel, and pain peak. It was a rough ride but the sweet parts of the journey made it worth it.

The plot was great; absolutely adored the twist on the fairytale elements. The world building was intricate; Autumn described the setting vividly. The same attention to detail was also applied to the side characters.

Would recommend to those on the search for a great Fairytale retelling.

I devoured this book in one night! Some readers have mentioned the book is fast-paced, but to me this was a plus because I found I just couldn't put it down - I was always dying to know how each situation resolved so just kept reading all Saturday night ... I know, I know, my life is wild :D

Now, being honest, I found some elements of the first third of the book upsetting - namely the complete power imbalance between Dracke and his prisoner, Mina ... posting no spoilers, but some of it made me feel like I did when Edward took the engine out of Bella's car - it was portrayed as 'protective' but I just found it controlling.

BUT I am very glad I persevered because by the time I got to the second part my blue ovaries made all the feminism drain out of me!

The book has the vibe of the 2017 Disney Beauty and the Beast mixed with the Gary Oldman Dracula (I definitely see Dracke as Gary Oldman in my head!) but also elements of Bram Stoker and of the Madame de Villeneuve original Beauty and the Beast (posting no spoilers, but what brought this home to me was the cleverly-done question mark over whether or not Dracke had been cursed unjustly (as the Beast was in Madame de Villeneuve's story). The bond between Mina and her two sisters made me think of my favourite parts of the ACOTAR books - I love books where the FMC doesn't just dump her close female friends when a hot guy appears - Mina remains loyal to her sisters, just as Feyre did.

Another small detail - I really liked the representation the author gave to something many of us (women) go through ... now, I have read Astarion/FMC fanfics that went to some very graphic places (hehe I'm sure I don't need to spell it out!) but this was nothing like that - it was sensitive and completely non-sexual, just Dracke being compassionate.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes vampires, Twilight, ACOTAR or Baldur's Gate 3 (especially if they stan Edward, Rhysand or Astarion!)

I will definitely be reading the rest of this beautiful series!

Kingdom Of Forgotten curses is a fascinating and well penned retelling of Beauty and the Beast where the beast is in fact undead. The author has a great writing style, and the plot keeps you hooked. I adore fairytale retellings, so I will be reading on (sequels etc.)

Having already read A.R Kaufer’s first book, and thoroughly enjoying it I knew that I would love this one too. It was one of my final reads of 2023, and an enjoyable one at that!
