Clucked: A Quirky Nautical Tale of Adventure, Misadventure, and Justice Served Kindle Edition
Love a good adventure story-one with sweet old dogs and flawed, yet lovable humans? Hate the idea of factory farming and animal abuse? If so, you're gonna love Clucked! Clucked takes the reader, its bereaved Spam-loving protagonist, and one elderly rat terrier on a wild voyage from Corpus Christi Bay to the Sea Islands.
What do you do when you have nothing left to lose? You say goodbye to everything and everyone you'd ever known, pack up your worldly belongings (and an old half-blind dog), cast off your lines and set sail in your tiny sailboat to anywhere else.
Two years ago, Matt lost his wife to an asleep-at-the-wheel truck driver for the corrupt Clawson Chicken Corporation, and most of his savings to a court battle with the aforementioned fowl magnate. Trusting that the ocean will heal his battered psyche, Matt heads out from Corpus Christi Bay in a vintage sloop, trying to out sail bad memories and find a path forward.
As he winds his way east beyond the Gulf, he has adventures (and misadventures), meets a quirky cast of characters, and is dogged at every turn by reminders of the reach of the greedy chicken king, Colonel Clyde Clawson. A close encounter with a coral reef nearly wrecks his boat, a mishap that draws him away from his loosely-charted journey, up the intracoastal waterway, to Bullfrog's Boatyard, and ultimately into the heart of Gullah Geechee country.
Here, Matt meets a beguiling linguistic anthropologist and learns the terrible truth about the Colonel, his secret lab, and his cannibalistic coterie (the Circle of Tantalus). With environmental abuse running rampant and factory farming taking on a whole new meaning, it will be up to Matt and friends, both old and new, to bring down the greedy Clawson corporation, find justice for its victims and along the way, save a musical dog, and a whole bunch of chickens.

Reviews:
"With a touch of romance, a hint of heartbreak, and some old-fashioned adventure, Troy Hollan's Clucked - A Quirky Nautical Tale of Adventure, Misadventure and Justice Served is a real page turner." -IndieReader
"With its quirky characters and amusing mishaps, this compelling adventure novel takes readers on a journey for justice while touching on profound societal issues. I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in a well-written sea-bound adventure novel detailed with depth and action." -Sublime Book Review
"Clucked blends humor, adventure, and social commentary, making it a must-read for those who appreciate tales of resilience, unconventional heroes, and the fight for what's right in a world gone awry. But if you're a reader like me, you'll mainly remember how kick-ass, 5-star funny it is!" -Cam Torrens, author of Stable and False Summit
"I was delighted by Hollan's unorthodox mishmash of a man's deeply serious personal crisis and the quirky roller coaster of reveals that propelled me from about two-thirds of the way through to the end. The catharsis found in Clucked is somehow both comical and profoundly, genuinely rewarding. 10 crispy nuggets (with buffalo sauce) out of 10!" -Alex Hugie, author of Loophole
"Nicholas Sparks meets Jurassic Park in Troy Hollan's highly entertaining debut. An engaging blend of nautical adventure, corporate greed, and a fight for justice. Hardships are overcome and new friendships are forged, but the danger-both physical and emotional-runs as deep as the Gulf of Mexico." -Regina Buttner, author of Down a Bad Road
"We read many stories of women trying to start over after the death of a spouse or lover, and Clucked finally treats the topic from a male point of view. Author Troy Hollan does a masterful job, and we watch as Matt, step by step, once again rejoins life. Hollan is an excellent story teller. Highly recommended."-Karen K. Brees, author of Headwind
"Troy Hollan's Clucked is a fun and fast-paced romp through perilous waters.Written with wit, wry humor, and a vast knowledge of sailing, Clucked is filled with memorable characters and surprising twists. Hollan's debut novel is a celebration of community, friendship, and the triumph of the human spirit."-Travis Tougaw, author of Foxholes
"In his delightful debut novel, Troy Hollan takes readers on a maritime adventure rife with mishaps, humor, and unexpected friendships. At times laugh out loud funny, but also heart warming and sincere, this is a debut too engaging to pass up." -Kim McCollum, author of What Happens in Montana
From the Inside Flap
To Melissa, my wife and best friend who always supports my adventures (real and literary), and our two rescue dogs, Tripp and Lizzy Lou, who have no qualms about waking me up well before dawn to get busy writing.
Thanks to Terrance Grundy, editor and proof-reader extraordinaire, who was my first "real" reader and an early fan of Hank, the rat terrier (arguably Clucked's main character).
While this is a work of fiction, and I make many references to real places and historical events, I have chosen to make specific reference to the Gullah people of South Carolina. My intention is to honor their history and spirit and through the collective efforts of my book's characters, to show a very genuine, if fictional, attempt to honor their quest to retain family-owned land.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2023Taking off in his sailboat to find a way forward after the death of his wife, Matt encounters so much more on his journey of healing: he discovers the gentle wonders of islands he visits, strangers of disarming kindness and generosity, lasting friendships, an unexpected love, and an exquisitely satisfying stroke of justice. While the novel starts as Matt’s engaging wanderings with his trusty old dog Hank (akin to Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley), Troy Hollan’s Clucked steadily transforms into big-hearted adventure filled with staggering revelations.
From the beginning, the reader feels Matt’s palpable loss from the tragic death of his beloved Julie, who was killed by an asleep-at-the-wheel truck driver for the corrupt Clawson Chicken Corporation. The crimes of the corporate leader Colonel Clawson are legion and multiply over the course of the novel. His lost court battle with that corporate magnate and his two years of mourning Julie’s death push Matt away from his job on the power lines and onto his sloop.
That journey from Corpus Christi through the Gulf of Mexico, in and about Florida, and up the Carolina coast is filled with watery wonders – phosphorescent plankton, cavorting porpoises, and menacing swells. Yet even more memorable are the friendly and helpful strangers along the way, including Kenny and his granddaughter Desiree, the retirees Jim and Clara, and the wild Cajun shrimp Captain, Boudreaux. Indeed, “at every turn, a helping hand had pulled him out of the darkness and back on his feet.”
Following his boat being torn up on a coral reef, Matt limps his vessel through the intercoastal waterway up to Charleston for repairs and is befriended by the fiberglass expert Roy, aka Tiny. That relationship with Tiny – a Gullah whose grand extended family lives out on the Sea Islands – will lead to Matt discovering the two most important things he could use right now: love and revenge. Those two become entwined in the smart and lovely Hannah who has her own troubled history with Colonel Clawson. And boy, that’s when the story delivers many intrigues and thrills.
Without giving away too much, I will say the revelations about Clawson’s lurid production methods and his personal debaucheries are both magnificent yet consistent with all that has preceded. The account by the servant Jenkins is stunner, and the disclosures just get even better from there. Filled with wry humor and satiric moments throughout, the novel deftly develops the theme of how the cruel, profit-hungry insensitivities of large corporations cavalierly harm everyday people, often with tragic results. The crimes of Colonel Clawson serve as an allegory for the lurid corruption of the American Dream.
Hollan’s Clucked serves as an inspiring reminder of the best of the American spirit, one that cries out for redemption. Indeed, this novel with a fun and satisfying read even as it mines our dark past and present.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2024Matt lost his wife, Julie, in a tragic accident when she got hit by a Clawson Chicken Corporation truck driver. The driver fell asleep at the wheel after being forced by Colonel Clyde Clawson to drive long hours or lose his job. To bring justice for Julie, Matt fought Clawson in court and lost everything, including his home. Two years later, broken-hearted and full of anguish, Matt sets out from Corpus Christi Bay in his patched-up sailboat to live his and Julie’s dream. Hank, his old dog, is his copilot. When a new patch job on his boat lands him and Hank in the heart of Gullah Geechee Country, Matt’s solitary life takes a wild turn toward friendship, healing, and redemption. Outside of the courtroom, his new friends help fight the greedy chicken factory mogul, pitting their wills against Colonel Clawson’s cruelty and degradation. Clucked is a wonderful, heroic, sea adventure. In his grief, Matt runs into one trouble after another. Yet each trouble brings a helping hand, new sea faring friends, and a new reason for faith in humanity. Troy Hollan writes with a clear love of the sea and sailing, as well as a love for justice. His writing is lyrical and funny and full of good-hearted people, just what Matt and Hank need. I enjoyed this story and its classic good against evil theme. I could feel myself in the boat, rocking on the ocean. I was transported to the Gullah Geechee Country, a place a knew nothing about before reading this novel. Rooting for justice, I read late into the night to finish the book. And I’m glad I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2023The book starts with a clever title that perfectly works once you read the book. Embarking on a solo sailing odyssey after losing his love, the protagonist shares the intricacies of navigating a sailboat solo with a mostly blind dog. The first half is a captivating exploration of sailing, while a mid-story shipwreck shifts the narrative towards an unexpected evil chicken empire subplot. Though skillfully written, the abrupt transition creates a sense of disjointedness, making the book a good but not seamless read. It left me torn between the allure of maritime adventures and the eccentricity of surreal twists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure at sea
Matt's nautical adventure with his dog pal Hank takes him on a quest of healing and redemption, helping him to believe in the spirit of kindness in others once more, something he wasn't sure existed anymore after the death of his beloved wife. While sailing, he runs across others fouled by Clawson's Chicken and their nefarious practices. With his newfound friends, he finds a way to fight back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clucked
Warning! After reading this you’ll never want to any chicken that isn’t certified free range.
What starts off as one man’s need to escape everything that has happened after his wife’s untimely death by single handedly sailing with just his elderly dog as companion turns into ultimately a campaign to bring down the man responsible.
Along the way he meets more people similarly affected in a negative manner by the same person.
This is also an indictment of self serving big business, of people who believe that their wealth and position entitles them to do as they wish without fear of consequence or repercussions. It also serves as a reminder that we are all in this world together and that we have a responsibility and a duty to our fellow man, to our position as caretakers of the environment and of the planet and its limited resources.
“All it takes for evil to flourish is for to ignore it. It doesn’t affect me. It’s not my problem.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Feelgood Book
I have no knowledge of sailing and have never been to the warm waters of the Bahamas or the islands off the coast of the Carolinas but I enjoyed every moment immersed in this book. Travelogue, adventure, friendship and coming to terms with loss are all there as well as sailing tips for landlubbers like me. Oh, let us not forget little Hank and .......... chickens!
