Love's New Beginnings: A Christian Historical Western Romance (Wyoming Sunrise Series Prequel) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 226 ratings

Where it all began…

Lydie Beauchamp recently moved with her aunts—sisters Myrtle and Fern—to the untamed Wyoming Territory. When a teaching position in nearby Willow Falls captures her attention, can she leave her aunts, one of whom just suffered a broken heart, and embark on this new adventure? Will she find the courage to persevere in the midst of challenges, one being a handsome challenge named Solomon Eliason?

Reverend Solomon Eliason has the goal of making a difference. Hired as the pastor of Willow Falls, he must convince the congregation that he is able to undertake the role of a reverend. When he’s nominated to be the adult in charge of the annual prank tradition at the school, he embraces the idea, thinking the new teacher will be a crotchety, elderly woman like his former teacher. What he doesn’t realize until it’s too late is that the teacher is far from crotchety and elderly.

When Lydie's and Solomon’s paths cross in an unexpected way during the prank tradition at the Willow Falls school, can Solomon redeem himself in the eyes of the lovely new teacher?

Take a glimpse into where it all began with Lydie and Solomon's story in this tender tale that reminds us that God can and does use willing hearts for His purposes.

This book is Christian Historical fiction, which is one of my favorite genres, especially when it is done well and is credible. Love’s New Beginnings is great, well-done, credible, and fiction that centers on faith and living the Christian life regardless of the circumstances. This book shines with sympathetic characters that at times exhibit painful insecurities that are conquered by God’s grace.

Things I Loved about the book:
    • The aunties were cute. In the opening scene, we find out the two aunties, Myrtle and Fern along with Lydia moved from Minnesota to because of a mail-order type proposal to Fern from a Mr. Wilkins just about a month ago. But oops, Mr. Wilkins is now not into Prune Creek or Fern, nope, he is now into gold found around South Pass City. Nothing like a duplicitous character to pull you into a book with boatloads of sympathy for the jilted fiancé. Lydia is the one who happens to see Mr. Wilkins leaving and gives him a piece of her mind. Then, we shortly meet the aunties with all their eccentricities, such as Fern’s impulsivities and Myrtle’s inability to make pies!
    • The sensitivity and insecurities of both Solomon and Lydia pulled me into the story as well as their chosen professions they used to serve others. I know what it is like to be a first-time teacher with all your hopes, dreams, and expectations. I’ve also seen the excitement, trepidation, and fear that first-time pastor’s experience in their initial pastorate. This was captured well and made more compelling as it was layered over the budding relationship of Solomon and Lydia. Both characters lost their parents and were raised by a relative, although Lydia’s aunties were loving and Solomon’s grandfather was abusive.
    • I appreciated the testimony and Christian love that the character of Abe brought to this story. Solomon needed a mentor and the real-life arms of Jesus, and that is what Abe brought to Solomon. At the end of the book (page 170), Solomon reflects on the gift that Abe has been to him as a grandfather that care for and adopted him, regardless of blood ties. He also prayed that he could follow the biblical example of Abe to “go and do likewise” Luke 10:37.
    • I appreciate a book that strongly presents themes and carries those themes throughout the book. Love’s New Beginnings brings forth the themes of forgiveness and trusting God instead of worrying. The book opens with 1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” and then near the end of the story, when Solomon is bombarded with worry concerning his ability to provide for Lydia, the first Peter verse comes to his mind. Both the lead characters show growth in relationship to these themes of forgiveness and trust versus worry.

It is wonderful to close a book and feel you just met some good friends, friends that enriched your life. This is my first series of Penny Zeller and I highly anticipate reading other books by this author.

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

What a beautiful, western, Christian historical romance by Penny Zeller. I’ve been longing lately to read a novella like Love’s New Beginnings. Zeller’s Christmas- themed story features Lydie Beauchamp, a young first-time teacher in a small Wyoming Territory town, and Solomon Eliason, a young, untested preacher in the same town. Both want to desperately to succeed where God has called them, but when circumstances seem adverse, question that calling.

I love returning to the days of the Old West in uncomplicated storylines, full of faith well-interwoven into the narrative, with humor and clean romance. Aunt Fern and Aunt Myrtle are great counterpoints and comic relief. They help the story shine brightly. I also love the value of mentors as seen in this novel. Lydie and Solomon are enabled to reach towards their full potential because of godly people in their lives.

Be sure and check out the stagecoach riding rules. I loved the “no snoring if you fall asleep.” I found myself laughing aloud several times. What blessed medicine at this time in my life!

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

    Notable Quotables:

“You might be worrying when you start to pray, but there’s no way you can pray and keep worrying at the same time.”

“I just hope I’m suitable for the position.” …“You’re suitable for whatever it is God calls you to.”

“Even if Solomon wanted to forget his mistakes, there was one man who would never allow him to do so.”

“…that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”

“You don’t have to be someone special to come to Him. As a matter of fact, I think He prefers those who are broken and know they need a Savior. ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.’”

Solomon Eliason is having difficulty finding acceptance as the new pastor and an even harder time making an apology to the new schoolteacher, Lydie Beauchamp. She’s shy and soft spoken, and so much prettier than he expected. But as the year moves forward toward Christmas, a friendship of sorts begins to grow and soon the newest residents of Willow Falls, Wyoming find themselves having a winter romance.

A prequel novella to Penny Zeller’s Wyoming Sunrise series, Love’s New Beginnings tells the story of the beginnings of the relationship between two established series characters (and was much requested, according to the author’s note). As this is my first read from this series and author, it is delightful on its own and a wonderfully sweet and faith filled romance for the historical fiction reader. I’m looking forward to reading more in the series.

    Recommended.
