I love Down Syndrome children! They are so loving, precious and many have the capacity to work and live outside the home. I was in our choir with a young lady who lived in her own apartment, worked 3 part time jobs and did well. While that is true of some, I would love to keep mine, if I was fortunate enough to have been blessed to have one, to live with me just for their love! I'm sure every story varies, but I believe you "get out what you put in" is the reward in relationships! I'm speaking from what I've seen, not experienced! Loved the characters, especially, Gramps and Granny. I am a Granny! I believe this book will appeal to many readers!

I loved the family dynamics and interactions. I loved the miscommunication and the honesty. This is an interesting story, and held my attention the entire book. I recommend this book.

I enjoyed the book! Birdie used a matchmaker to find a husband to help with the livery. She was matched with Joseph - a former livery. There were many interesting characters in the book. I recommend reading this book!

The Mail-Order Papa series will consist of clean, Christian-based, historical books. Rather than a mail-order bride, what about a mail-order groom? Sometimes, even a woman has to take a chance to find happiness.

Joseph Evans is a widower with a five-year-old daughter, Livy, and guardian of his brother-in-law, Hank. Joseph and Hank take care of blacksmithing and farrier work. The one thing he never dreamed would happen was that the railroad expansion would come through his property. His friend will convince him to drive the stagecoach for him—and that is how he meets Birdie at their stagecoach stop—learning about her family’s plight also pushes him towards using a matchmaker.

Birdie Mae Murphy feels as if she has the weight of the world on her shoulders. With the death of her parents, and the failing health of her grandparents, she is not only taking care of the horses, livery work, blacksmithing, and farrier duties, but she must also help cook meals for the travelers. But their business as a stagecoach changeout is in jeopardy because of the need for speed and she is only one person. After being left at the altar, she doesn’t see marriage in her future, but for the sake of her family’s welfare and home, she is willing to do what needs to be done.

The story’s plot will have both Joseph and Birdie writing to a matchmaker that was recommended to them. Birdie has no hopes or dreams of romance, she just needs another blacksmith and man to help with the business. Joseph has loved and doesn’t think he has it in his heart for another, but his daughter could use a female. Both omit things in their letters to one another—things that come to light after the wedding. A man in town was willing to marry Birdie, but it was because his family wanted their land. It won’t take long for Joseph to come to his wife’s defense and set him in his place.

George: If this husband of yours doesn’t treat you well, remember, I’m only a stone’s throw away.
Joseph: Where I’m from, we don’t cotton to someone grabbing a woman. Touch my wife again, and you’ll be short on sunsets. If you know what’s good for you, that will also be the last innuendo you make.
George: You misunderstand me. Birdie and I are old friends.
Joseph: If that’s true, then you’ll be more mindful to treat my wife with respect in the future.
    Geoge: Yes, of course.

“Never you mind about some of our flock. Envy sometimes brings out the worst in a person. And there’s a lot to be envied. Our Birdie is beautiful, smart, unselfish, and a hard worker. You are a fortunate man.”

The story will have both Joseph and Birdie impressed with how well their two families merge—yet these two still have secrets they haven’t shared. That leads to misconceptions and hurt feelings. Eventually, they will discover that God brought two people together at the perfect time.

“There’s no point looking back when you can move forward in hope.”

Overall, I really liked the story but it just ended so abruptly, where an epilogue would have completed this story. I just felt like it was lacking, or incomplete—the birth of the babies would have been the finishing touch.

A delightful mail-order bride in reverse that’ll melt your heart. A Blacksmith for Birdie is a historical western romance with immersive narration, a rugged setting, and characters in need of each other. It’s a new approach to the mail-order bride trope and why not. With a matchmaker sealing the deal, this couple needs a miracle and that is what they get. Be transported to another era where faith and hard work go hand-in-hand.

Let’s talk about the characters. I connected with both Joseph and Birdie. Their plights are easy to relate to and my heart went out to them. What impresses me the most about these characters is their faith. Life is hard during this era and the only viable solution appears in the form of a very wise and astute matchmaker. How this couple deals with unmet expectations and strife inspires me.

The descriptive narration is impressive. Like many historical romance authors, Kimberly Grist plunges the reader into the time period. The narration is emotional and emotive. The reader feels everything and can picture the scene clearly. There were times when I didn’t want to close the book because I was enjoying myself too much while reading.

If you enjoy inspirational western historical romance, you’re going to love A Blacksmith for Birdie.
