The Busy Bridge That Got Its Break Kindle Edition
When a famous bridge is scheduled to be torn down and replaced, people from all over gather to honor the beloved landmark. But to one woman, once a little girl, it's more than just a bridge. It's a friendly face and comforting structure she grew up caring about. When the busy bridge came down, she said farewell to her old friend before it got the break it deserved.
The Busy Bridge is a poetic book that shows the history of a bridge that outlasted its predicted life span, carried more weight than it was designed to, and even claimed the fame of being the longest bridge in the state. Though a new bridge with a new name took its place, it will always be referred to as the Tappan Zee Bridge.
A story creatively written for readers of all ages; discover how one bridge brought people together, carried physical and emotional "tolls," and reminded travelers they were loved.
A heartwarming story that demonstrates how a simple smile or act of kindness can change a person's life.
A true story about a real bridge.

- "A heartwarming story that teaches children of all ages a simple yet profound truth; it's not WHAT we look at that matters; it's the lens we use when we SEE and experience it. The little girl views the bridge with her heart, and it's from this loving perspective of awe that she is able to experience its majesty and magic." Debbie Maron, Certified Professional Life Coach, CPLC
- "Shane captures the true spirit and history of the Tappan Zee Bridge, along with the affection so many felt for it, in this book that readers of all ages can appreciate and learn from." Mike Lawler, New York State Assemblyman
- "Author Shane Svorec's book The Busy Bridge That Got Its Break is pure and joyous and celebratory. Written for children, it begins as a rhythmic telling of the author's childhood connection to the busy Tappan Zee Bridge, a structure she and her family traveled regularly. Svorec's words capture the wonders of sights and sounds seen and heard from the backseat of the family car in a way imaginative young readers will appreciate as they contemplate their own special connections made. Life changes, though-a reality that plays into the storyline of the book as, years later, the bridge is eventually deemed too old and unfit to continue its work. And yet, beautiful things often come from change, one of the important life lessons the author leaves young readers to learn. The Busy Bridge is a creatively written book with a message that is enhanced by beautiful illustrations throughout, as well as age-appropriate questions to foster meaningful discussions with children. This is a truly special work that will be appreciated by parents, educators, caregivers-anyone who shapes young minds." Official NFAA Review
- "A reflective tribute to an iconic bridge with a touching story of growth, change, and the power of giving back to the environment. This beautifully illustrated book shows a child's connection to the world around her and her observations of the burdens carried by others through time. It shows change, hope, and repurpose in a constantly changing world." Helena Fotopoulos, LPC Licensed Professional Counselor Mental Health Clinician hsfcounselor.com
- "My favorite part was when the bridge gave people hope." Student at Windy Ridge School

About the author

Shane Svorec is a lifelong writer and author who currently resides in New Jersey, along with her husband, three children, rescue dogs, and chickens.
Best described as a traveling gypsy with the heart of a hippie and the faith of a missionary, Shane uses her hardships to connect, inspire and encourage others. Refusing to allow her past or circumstances to define her, she searches for the light in dark times and shows others how they can do the same.
Having traveled across the country as a child, she’s lived in more places than she can count and has stories to connect them all like destination dots on a map. Shane writes with such colorful and palpable descriptions; readers feel they can see the world through the back seat of a VW bus along with her. She credits her unconventional and adventurous upbringing for becoming an observant, resilient, flexible, brave, and empathetic woman and honest writer.
Once a child of the state, who later became a foster parent, Shane has made it her life mission to advocate for those without a voice. Using her many life experiences to connect with others, her writing reaches and touches readers of all ages.
A proud mother, animal lover, believer in angels, and faith-filled woman, she is highly involved in her community, an active member of her church, public servant, member of her local Board of Education, mental health and crisis intervention worker, perpetual peacemaker, and kindness spreader.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2022"The Busy Bridge That Got Its Break" is a creatively written, true story about a thoughtful, caring young girl (the author, who matured into a thoughtful and caring woman) and the significance of an important landmark, the Tappan Zee Bridge. Young readers will relate to the curiosity of the girl and will enjoy the colorful illustrations that compliment the story and bring her observations to life. More experienced readers will also appreciate learning about the history of the original bridge. Most importantly, all readers will benefit from the lessons they can take from this story such as being kind to others and the power of appreciating the people and things around us. As someone who grew up traveling on that bridge many a times, I never knew the background story of it until now. I loved this book and its messages, and I would recommend it to readers of all ages!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2023Yesterdays author visit was amazing. Shane was fabulous with our group of 120 third and fourth graders. They were all engaged and enjoyed the story. I believe they understood the message to look for the smiles, to slow down and enjoy the moments. I loved the way Shane talked about feelings, being sad, and how a smile can help all of us. This is the message our children need to hear. What a great lesson for all of us. Such a positive message with a sweet story. This book sends messages of hope and seeing the “light.” The world needs more of this! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️A great children’s book on the history and story behind The Tappan Zee Bridge.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2023The Busy Bridge that got it's Break is a heartwarming story about a young girl's view of a bridge that meant more to her than meets the eye. This book helps us understand how an object or structure can have a deeper meaning to us than others, because we all form attachments /sympathize differently. The illustrations in this book were beautiful and depicted the story perfectly. This book brought The Tappan Zee Bridge to life & I learned some history about the bridge also. I would recommend this book to all young & old.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2023Shane's book is charming, educational, and thoughtful. I love the concept of the book. It is a story about a significant bridge, the rise and the fall. Then, the real story in which Shane combines facts from our lives with the bridge story. How cool is that? I really like the idea. A story that teaches our children a lesson they can apply to life. At times, we all can get discouraged, so the message on the bridge is compelling and empowering. "Life is worth living." Never lose hope. Whatever you deal it, it shall pass, and the sun will rise again. Simple but powerful. I can visualize a parent or a grandparent with their child reading and discussing the story's meaning—a must-read for anyone.

I loved that the back of the book has a more adult true-life story of the author, Shane, and the bridge. What happened to the bridge, and what the bridge represents?
The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story is fantastic. Great for everyone.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2022The Busy Bridge that Got its Break is a story of admiration/support from a child as she sees the bridge as being more. The little girl feels compassion for an inanimate object, worried on how it will get rest from its daily grind. It teaches us to “pause” and remember all things/people/situations have a purpose and leave us with an impression. Great read for both young and experienced minds.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2022The Busy Bridge That Got Its Break is a charming story of a girl and her personal affection for a local bridge. The bridge becomes much more than a span across a river; it is a friend she cares for.
It’s easy to get caught up in the girl’s imagination as the bridge takes on a special significance that stays with her long into adulthood. It’s possible you may identify with this story and have a special landmark of your own that you admired over a lifetime -- a willow tree, or a statue, perhaps.
Svorec’s new tale is a different direction compared to her first book, the riveting, deeply personal story Broken Little Believer. But both books share what is at the core of this optimistic author: goodness and hope.
The illustrations by Graziella Miligi support the story nicely and have a little of an Eric Carle feel to them.
