Sinder: A Fairytale Retelling (The Gailleth Realm Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

In a ballroom filled with gossiping lords and ladies, he must find an ally... or lose everything.

Sinder St. Ayers is Ellacourt’s talented blacksmith, although he should be its ruler. Scheming relatives and swirling rumors of his mother’s infidelity have all but guaranteed his claim will be passed up for one of his brothers. The only things standing in their way are Sinder's grandparents and the King of Castlelore’s promise to await more evidence. Desperate to beat the ticking clock of his grandfather’s fading health, he agrees to attend a royal ball in hopes of winning Princess Charmant’s hand—and the support of her armies.

Princess Henrietta Charmant is eager to ascend her throne and further the good works of her parents, the King and Queen of Castlelore. However, to become the ruler of the realm’s mightiest kingdom, she must declare her engagement before the final stroke of midnight at the Midnight Ball, a few short weeks away. While she despairs of finding the paragon able to overlook her fondness for unprincess-like behavior, she sees potential in a mystery nobleman at her coming-out ball, nevermind his arrogance.

With time slipping quickly from their fingers and a growing rebellion beating at their gates, Sinder and Henrietta must unite their hearts and their kingdoms to safeguard their people. When tragedy strikes, the strength of their union will turn the ashes of loss into a blade of vengeance.

Sometimes we get lucky to find a story with a main character we love...this story has me INFATUATED! I fell in love with Sinder and Prin and really felt the sweet, intense love they have for each other, as well as the pain and uncertainty to be found in wondering if they were worthy enough to own that love.

And don't forget Gus! He's an epic equine hero of the highest order!

Once again Rose Walken has taken us to new places to meet new characters. A story of loss, renewal and love that everyone can enjoy. Congratulations Ms Walken on a book that will be well received.

I have watched several interpretations of Charles Perrault’s Cinderella before. Some are set in a similar era, some are completely reinvented for today, some have Cinderella as a hero and independent woman, and a few even have the gender roles reversed!

I must admit however that other than children’s books when I was a kid, I haven’t ventured into full-fledged novels inspired by classic fairytales. With that being the case in Rose Walken’s interpretation, I wasn’t sure how I was going to react.

Other than the obvious difference with Sinder being the focus of the story, I did not anticipate nor even fathom how original this piece could be. Several times throughout, I completely was anticipating several common elements from the original tale to come about only to discover they were completely different. (Oh, don’t worry, a few classic signature tropes do come along. And depending on how many versions of the Cinderella story you recall, you may even recognize some references and easter eggs from other various works.) There’s something truly refreshing about journeying through an inspired work of art and being completely blown away by a world built from scratch and experiencing all the rules being rewritten – this being no different.

It is that originality which is Walken’s strongest element here. The intricate and intentional details really plays to the story’s advantage. Prin and Sinder, along with several original characters, really invoke the reader to question a status quo and challenge the desires and motives we memorized in our youth. As the book’s trigger warnings explain, this is a rather dark interpretation. I also enjoyed this element but that’s up to a reader’s preference.

As far as criticism, I found it difficult to accept the author’s rationale on a few character’s origins and motivations. I sensed a lot of experimentation, especially with culture blending, which I didn’t feel came off authentic. I’m not sure if it’s my own hang-up or not, but I didn’t need to learn the histories and backstories of secondary characters which were arguably inconsequential to the storyline. It was distracting at times and slowed some of the pacing.

Overall, I really think this book is worth a look if for no other reason than to experience a classic tale with several twists and turns from the story you already know.

I liked the reverse Cinderella story line. Overall the story line of good overcomes evil was enjoyable.
