Escaping My Demons Kindle Edition
Throughout this book we learn about the sufferance of a baby boy, unwanted by his teenage parents.
This boy grew up with an aggressive and womanising father that constantly reminded him that he was a mistake that ruined his father's life.
While been beaten and mentally abused, all he craved from his parents was love but received nothing but humiliation and sufferance from his father. This caused detrimental trauma to the young boy, and he grew up believing that he would not achieve anything in life.
I was this little boy, and this is my story.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2025Joseph Fagarazzi’s ‘Escaping My Demons’ is an evocative journey into the dark and often hidden world of abuse, wrapped in the tapestry of one man's life story. This memoir is not just a recounting of traumatic events; it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Joseph’s narrative is raw and unfiltered, bringing to the surface the emotions that many choose to bury. As readers, we are thrust into the early years of Joseph's life, where love was a foreign concept, replaced by the stinging blows of a father's hand and the cold indifference of a mother trapped in her own web of despair. These early chapters are heart-wrenching, yet necessary, as they lay the foundation for understanding the profound impact of neglect and abuse on a child's psyche.
The book delves deep into the psychological torment Joseph endured, painting a vivid picture of his internal struggle. His father, a man consumed by his own demons, projected his failures and frustrations onto young Joseph, creating an environment rife with fear and self-loathing. The portrayal of Joseph’s mother adds another layer of complexity to the narrative. Her inability to protect her son, whether due to her own victimization or denial, leaves the reader grappling with the harsh realities of domestic violence. As Joseph shares his journey, it becomes painfully clear how these early experiences molded his self-perception, leaving him to navigate a world where he felt unworthy and unloved.
Despite the grim subject matter, ‘Escaping My Demons’ is ultimately a story of hope and redemption. Joseph's transformation from a boy shattered by abuse to a man who reclaims his life is nothing short of inspiring. His path to healing is fraught with obstacles, yet his determination to rise above his circumstances shines through every page. The memoir offers a candid look at the arduous process of healing, where Joseph learns to confront his past, forgive himself, and embrace the possibility of a future untainted by the shadows of his upbringing. His journey is a powerful reminder that while the scars of abuse may never fully fade, they do not have to define one's life.
The role of Joseph's wife, Pam, is integral to his story of survival and recovery. Her unwavering support and love serve as a beacon of hope, illustrating the transformative power of compassion and understanding. Their relationship is a testament to the idea that love can indeed heal and that supportive partnerships are crucial in overcoming past traumas. Pam’s presence in Joseph’s life not only aids in his healing but also exemplifies how relationships built on trust and respect can help break the cycle of abuse. Her role in the memoir adds a layer of warmth and humanity, offering readers a glimpse into the restoration of trust and the rebuilding of a shattered self-worth.
As a reviewer, I find myself not just recommending 'Escaping My Demons' for its literary merit, but for the important conversations it ignites. This memoir is an eye-opener for those unfamiliar with the intricacies of abuse, and a comfort for those who have lived through similar experiences. Joseph’s story serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating that it is possible to emerge from the depths of despair and find peace within oneself. It challenges readers to reflect on their own lives, to appreciate the resilience of those who have suffered, and most importantly, to foster empathy and understanding in a world that so desperately needs it.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2024I loved this book. Through his childhood eyes, Mr. Fagarazzi shows us his innocent, boisterous nature, and how through time, his father attempted to manipulate and control him and his sister.
While he succeeded in controlling his sister, he failed to control his son. I believe there was something irrational in his concept or symbol of who his son was or what he represented.
I think something was stuck in his mind and jealousy or resentment added to his false ideas and false ideals. I think he saw things in his son that he admired and was envious of and loved but could not let those emotions live with the false concepts that he already had of his son from birth.
This false concept had nothing to do with his son’s real self. I believe they were just ideas he had at the birth of his son and his daughter, and then he played out a type of “script” with each one. There were a set of rules of what behavior to display towards his son and a different set of rules of the behavior to display for his daughter. No matter what the son or daughter did, I believe the father felt comfortable when he stayed with the script. But when reality threatened his concept of his son, glimpses of his despair occurred. I do think his authentic emotion was rarely seen.
I believe the father was psychologically unsound and unstable and lived a shell life, a persona of self-delusion. In this his daughter and wife played along. It is difficult to know whether there was self-delusion that spilled over into the mother’s and daughter’s psyche. Did they pretend so much that they started to believe and see the father’s delusions as real life too?
His son could not be controlled or manipulated completely because his son would call him out on his behavior, questioning it, and that felt like a threat to his control. That changed the power game. And he could not lose that. I believe that was all he had—his ability to control. Who was he if he could not dominate people?
I don’t believe there was anything his son could do to change his father. I believe these false concepts of his children were ingrained in his head when they were born. If his son had succumbed to his father’s control, he would have been destroyed. His pushback, I believe, actually saved him from a deeper hole.
Although his father did affect his life negatively, I don’t think the son should take his father’s actions personally. I don’t think they could be changed because I don’t think they actually had anything to do with his son but something distant from his son—a false figment of his father’s imaginings.
Mr. Fagarazzi’s solutions to overcoming abuse are well thought out and mature. I believe this book is best for those that want to survive and thrive after abuse. It would be difficult to change narcissistic parents when their thoughts are so irrational and deeply ingrained in unrealities—fantasy. I greatly recommend this book. It is also an easy quick read.
