Thriving in Troubled Times: Meeting God in the Middle of Our Mess (Thriving in Life) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

We've all faced harsh trials during 2020. We need tools to guide us as we navigate through these difficult days. "Thriving in Troubled Times" is a 50-day devotional for those struggling with anxiety, stress, uncertainty, and fear. An enjoyable, often humorous look at principles that will equip and guide us. These fifty devotions are story-driven, many based on the author's personal struggles with anxiety and stress. Each is laced with scriptures from a variety of translations, applied in a practical and powerful manner. Each devotion ends with a Principle to grasp, a Promise to lay hold of, questions to Ponder, a Prayer to comfort, a truth to Pursue and Perceptions to record. Your life will be changed by "Thriving in Troubled Times."
These devos are based on the author's weekly blog, Barney's Bullets. Here's what many are saying about his writings:

Francine Rivers, New York Times bestselling author: "I thoroughly enjoy Barney's Bullets... The stories and lessons are terrific."

Jeff Johnson, Sonoma County Director, Young Life: "I read Barney's Bullet each week with great anticipation. His reflections are delightful to read and fresh... Nobody I know does it better. He is a modern Oswald Chambers."

Steve Marshall, Lead Pastor, Santa Rosa Christian Church: "In this present age of tension, hostility, and negativity, Barney Cargile's articles provide a sweet moment of inspiration and encouragement. His words are full of wit and wisdom."

Bret Avlakeotos, Lead Pastor, Spring Hills Community Church: "Barney's Bullets always present a relevant picture that makes a truth come alive."

Jim Swaney, Lead Pastor Sebastopol Christian Church: "Barney's Bullets are fascinating...He's both entertaining and inspirational, and I look forward to reading them each week!"

Cedric Panis, Pastor, Good Shepherd Fellowship, Philippines: "I always read Barney's Bullet: I get lots of lessons from it and even use them for preaching."

Barney Cargile has served in pastoral ministry since 1976. He and his wife Linda live on their small organic farm in Santa Rosa, California. They have two children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Cargile serves as an associate pastor with Santa Rosa Christian Church, and staff pastor for Intrepid Ministries, devoted to rescuing victims of human trafficking and domestic violence.

His greatest joys are traveling, teaching, and playing “monster” with his grandkids. He bases his life on Jesus's statement, "If you remain in me, and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” He is passionate about partnering with God to free those who are in spiritual and psychological bondage. He has traveled extensively, teaching worldwide.

His first book, "Thriving in Quarantine," was a number-one best-seller on Amazon. It chronicles the misadventures of their family on the Grand Princess in 2020, when COVID first made news. His second book, "Thriving in Troubled Times," is a companion volume, offering hope and encouragement during these difficult days.

I highly recommend this collection of positive and encouraging devotionals. Each of the 50 devotionals includes a relatable story with application. These individually and collectively remind us that trusting God, finding joy in the moment, embracing hope, and reflecting with gratitude are the principles that defeat the anxiety brought on by all the negative and troubles of our days. I'm so impressed with this well written collection that I plan to give them as gifts to my family this Christmas.

This is a great devotional book and has 50 devotional lessons devoted to helping you to thrive. Many of the lessons are humorous which makes it an enjoyable read and entices you to read more. Each of the lessons is explained in four spiritual practices. The author developed these four practices in order to survive the recent pandemic. He now reveals how these practices can help us to not just get by but how to thrive in difficult times.
We have Amazon Alexa and Alexa can read the Kindle version of this book. We can listen in the background and I like to listen before bedtime, etc.. I also enjoy listening to the book while following along with the printed book. This is a must buy if you want an enjoyable study of how God works.

Like others, I have been struggling with anxiety through this difficult time. I have been bombarded with negative thoughts and words from every direction, even more so as the holidays approach. And then Barney sent me a copy of his new book. I sat down and began to read. Immediately, my heart grew lighter and the stories began to bring me hope.
When I read “Monument to a Boll Weevil” I began to weep! It was EXACTLY WHAT I HAD JUST BEEN THROUGH! And that event has led me in a new direction. I am looking forward to reading every single story. This Christmas I will be giving this book that others may be as encouraged as I have been.

Barney Cargile has the gift of observing life around him and relating back to the reader as a teachable moment about God. He uses both history and modern day events in brief upbeat humorous stories that are memorable. I measure a good book by whether I find myself repeating what it said to others.... this is a good one! I recommend this book for personal encouragement or as a gift to someone else.

Cargile begins his devotionals with a interesting story or an illustration. Often they come from his own personal or family experience. These illustrations really give life to the principle or teaching he is trying to convey. And he ties each story beautifully to a Christian principle. In a turbulent world or worry and anxiety, Cargile offers God's perspective to our souls. I appreciate the deep questions he asks. They are good for myself, and for discussions for a couple, or in a small group. This book offers God's peace, encouragement and hope to the anxious reader.

Humorous, easy to read, with great short stories. Read it cover to cover, but want to go back now and read it as a devotional. Highly recommended for common sense and Biblical insight for anyone needing encouragement in these difficult times.

Good book so far, but I've had half a dozen pages just fall right out. Of course it's been just past 30 days since I ordered it, so nothing can be done. Super frustrating, never had a book fall apart while reading it, especially not a brand new one.

Loved this book! Author tells both factual and funny stories in each chapter then matches it to a scripture study for more in-depth study while relating it to our present times. This book is a must get and very easily read. It’s even better than his first book Thriving in Quarantine, which was also great!
