About the author

Janet Kay lives and writes on a pristine lake in Northwoods of Wisconsin. In the winter, she escapes to Galveston Island, Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico.
Drawn to nature since she was a child, she sees its wonders as a source or renewal, reflection, and connection with something greater than oneself. She is also strongly drawn to the Victorian era and its fascinating history, themes that are often reflected in her writing.
Her lifelong passions include creative writing, photography, travel, and spending time with family and friends.
She has published numerous feature articles, short stories, non-fiction pieces, and poems over the past 20 years.
Janet Kay has published four novels to date - "Waters of the Dancing Sky," "Amelia 1868," "The Sisters," and "Rainy Lake Rendezvous," a psychological suspense/adventure novel that takes place on the wilderness islands of Rainy Lake along the Minnesota/Ontario international border.
William Kent Krueger, New York Times bestselling author, has endorsed Rainy Lake Rendezvous: " Janet Kay offers readers a rich tapestry of intrigue, history, Ojibwe lore and legends - even of ghosts, set against the stunning background of the border country. If you're in search of a true taste of the North Country and a diverting tale to take you there, look no further."
Stacie Theis, Book Reviewer with Beach Bound Books, had this to say about Kay's novels: "Janet Kay is a gifted storyteller who enthralls her readers with her brilliant imagination and alluring plots. You won't be able to put her books down!"

- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2021Janet Kay’s creepy and delusional ex-lawyer Rob Calhoun, aka Bob Johnson, will make you think twice about taking that vacation in the deep north woods. Rob has never been short of charm, until he divorced his wife for a pregnant girlfriend/wife number two who promptly disappeared with the son he never knew nor cared about. Ten years’ worth of obsessive preparation to rescue Beth, the wife Rob should never have let go, leads to an intriguing, terrifying series of revelations that will keep readers turning pages.
A mysterious message repeats in Bob’s head…Bob has a rendezvous with death. As we learn more about Bob, his ex-wife Beth and new husband Seth, and their young son Jason, the deeper we’re drawn into this tale of spirit guides, premonition, and the results of choices that haunt them. Taking on a new persona, Bob’s careful plot winds across the US-Canada border and onto First Nation lands through the legendary boundary waters and islands of Minnesota and Ontario. Fall and its treacherous weather add to the suspense. Bob justifies his mania by believing Seth must be holding Beth hostage and he must save her.
Seth’s thought-provoking grandmother holds the story together as she whispers to each of them from beyond messages of warning, comfort, and a purpose that needs to be carried out.
A sequel to Waters of the Dancing Sky, echoes of reincarnation from earlier lives complement contemporary events. The profound message of forgiveness, “forgiving others—and yourself—were the keys to letting go of the past and embracing a future filled with endless possibilities” leaves the reader with hope. Kay’s tale of possibilities is recommended for high school-age readers and up who love adventurous drama and mysteries. Mild language and alcohol use.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2023In Janet Kay’s “Rainy Lake Rendezvous,” readers quickly learn that Rob Calhoun loves just one thing more than his next slug of Jack Daniels. And that is his ex-wife, Beth.
He divorced Beth after his mistress got pregnant, but only because his bully of a father forced him to in order to salvage their law firm’s image. But the girlfriend is gone, too.
Now an alcoholic, Rob is so delusional that he believes Beth is being held captive by her second husband, a Native American named Seth. Rob hatches a plan to rescue her after stealing a boatload of money from the firm and assuming a new identity as Bob Johnson.
His plans go awry when he learns Beth and Seth are raising a 10-year-old boy. Still determined to get Beth back, he kidnaps the boy in hopes he can exchange him for the love of his life.
Is the man the boy knows as “Doctor Bob” beyond all hope and reason? Maybe not. The spirit of a Native American ancestor plays a role as the boy starts helping Bob find clarity. The kidnapping, however, creates a dilemma that tears the wraps off long-held family secrets.
Kay’s latest book is a sequel to “Waters of the Dancing Sky.” In her new novel, Kay again invokes many qualities of the northern Minnesota and southern Ontario border region that has drawn Native Americans and tourists for generations: The abundant fish. Family time around a crackling campfire. The awe-inspiring northern lights.
If you’ve never had the privilege of soaking in the Rainy Lake region, hop aboard Kay’s new “Rendezvous.”
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2020In her fourth novel, Janet Kay delves into universal questions of family, tradition, evil, forgiveness, and redemption. The reader is introduced to complex characters, from an abusive and delusional ex-husband to a talented Ojibwe artist; a loving compassionate mother to a precocious boy (sure to be a future astronaut). And then there is Nokomis, a guiding-spirit mother.
The remoteness of the boundary waters resonate as backdrop to stories, from the brilliance of the staghorn sumac to the flicker of sunlight on tannin-dyed northern waters. These life stories and spirit-forces naturally reverberate in this world.
Kay’s interweaving human stories are destined to tangle. Kidnapping or vision quest? Stockholm syndrome or biological connection? Serendipity or predestination? Hope or spiritual guidance? You must read Rainy Lake Rendezvous to find the answers to these mysteries.
