About the author

Janet Kay lives and writes on a pristine lake in Northwoods of Wisconsin. In the winter, she escapes to Galveston Island, Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico.
Drawn to nature since she was a child, she sees its wonders as a source or renewal, reflection, and connection with something greater than oneself. She is also strongly drawn to the Victorian era and its fascinating history, themes that are often reflected in her writing.
Her lifelong passions include creative writing, photography, travel, and spending time with family and friends.
She has published numerous feature articles, short stories, non-fiction pieces, and poems over the past 20 years.
Janet Kay has published four novels to date - "Waters of the Dancing Sky," "Amelia 1868," "The Sisters," and "Rainy Lake Rendezvous," a psychological suspense/adventure novel that takes place on the wilderness islands of Rainy Lake along the Minnesota/Ontario international border.
William Kent Krueger, New York Times bestselling author, has endorsed Rainy Lake Rendezvous: " Janet Kay offers readers a rich tapestry of intrigue, history, Ojibwe lore and legends - even of ghosts, set against the stunning background of the border country. If you're in search of a true taste of the North Country and a diverting tale to take you there, look no further."
Stacie Theis, Book Reviewer with Beach Bound Books, had this to say about Kay's novels: "Janet Kay is a gifted storyteller who enthralls her readers with her brilliant imagination and alluring plots. You won't be able to put her books down!"

- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2013Great! Met the author and was impressed on her journey in life. She spoke of how she began to write and gave me a short history of how she really enjoys writing. At the time she was working on a new book......that was 2yrs ago!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2013perfect gift for a friend. Interesting because of all the references to local places. The gift was enjoyed by recipient.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2015Beautiful story about love and healing and hope. I could visualize the lake and the seasons perfectly. The characters came very much alive and real. Wonderful read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2014Years of domestic abuse have altered Beth Calhoun. When she finally has the courage to break free after her daughter is grown and out of the house, Beth answers the summons of a family friend to her grandmother’s deathbed.
Nana raised Beth after her mother’s death in a boating accident on Rainy Lake, Minnesota, but Beth had thought she’d wanted more in life and eloped as a teenager. Now back, Beth attempts to reestablish a life for herself, including the mystery of her parentage to which her grandmother whispered clues as she lay dying.
The best clues are locked in trunks in the attic, and this is where Beth, with a curious lack of urgency, eventually sorts out her mother’s secret. Another part of learning to move on means casting off her ex-husband who is reluctant to share his wealth, and learning to love someone else, her neighbor, Seth, an Ojibwe artist, who had known and helped her grandmother, and kept many of the family secrets, which it turns out, weren’t all that secret in the small community.
Told through several running character viewpoints, this story of regaining identity and dignity, self-discovery, and appreciation of family is a good virtual trip “up north” to lake country.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2018I read in one sitting as I could not put it down. What a wonderful story by this artist. I have never read her books before but saw a release date for her new book and she is a Wisconsin author. So when I went to read about it and saw that it took place in Northern Minnesota, she talks about Kettle Falls, all places I know and love, I knew I had to read it. I was not dissapointed. She covers her characters so well you feel like you are in the room with them. She writes as if you are walking the trails, guiding along in a kayak or sitting by the water with her. This is a must read and dicss book. Of course there were tears shed by me but I loved it. Thanks you Janet Kay for this book
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2010Forty-year-old Beth Calhoun is every woman's inspiration...and nightmare. Living in an elegant high rise overlooking Chicago's Lake Michigan, she seems to have everything going for her. And then her dream world bursts open at the seams. Her abusive husband leaves her for another woman. She has no job, no skills, no future. Her daughter is gone, studying art in Europe.
When her uncle calls to tell her that her grandmother is dying, images of her own mother's mysterious death when Beth was only six dance in her head. Her grandmother had taken her in and raised her, been her strength, provided her source of hope, happiness, and inspiration.
Now Nana, too, was being pulled from Beth's life.
Rushing to her grandmother's home on a lake far into the Midwestern wilderness, she recognizes a hauntingly real need to reexamine her life. But where to begin? Born illegitimately and abandoned by death as a child, she hasn't a clue. And then she finds an old trunk in the attic, filled with her mother's diaries and poetry. Will the secreted items she unveils in the musty room shed light on her past? Will the clues that she pursues illuminate her future?
When she learns the truth about her father, she faces yet another dilemma: the man she thought was her happily married uncle is actually much more. When Beth's husband arrives on the island to confess his repentance and convince his estranged wife to return to Chicago with him, she realizes she can never face her life of old again.
Waters of the Dancing Sky is an elegantly told story filled with twists and turns, horror and tenderness, conflicts and resolution. Touched by the spirits of Native Americans long since passed from this world, emboldened by the majesty and magic of the North Woods that surround her, Beth learns at last to live life anew...to let go of the past and embrace the future, whatever it might bring.
"They scanned the horizon in silence. Suddenly, a pair of pure white gulls circled overhead several times--then landed beside them. Beth held her breath as her tears began to flow. Letting herself go, she felt waves of love and peace flowing through her like a river with no beginning, no end. The female gull stared into her eyes, mesmerizing her, as images of her mother flickered through her mind.
"Time seemed to stand still--until the gulls finally soared back up into the brilliant blue sky, into the universe of life. Together at last.
"'The circle of life...' Seth whispered as he pulled Beth into his arms.
"'Of love,' she sighed, as long-forgotten images of other times, other places, began to flash seamlessly through her soul. A river of lives cycling again and again. `I've always loved you, haven't I?' she suddenly realized.
"'Always,' his spirit answered hers. `Always.'"
This is a book not of Beth Calhoun and her quest for peace, love, and understanding. This is a book about the universality of life. It is a book about the magic of the human spirit and the often wisp-like will of the human mind. Highly recommended reading for lovers of life everywhere.
I give it and author Janet Kay five stars.
