Sitting in their carriage is a stranger who listens to their stories of detection, mystery and prophesy, and recognises some of the people involved. As they near their destination, the stranger realises he is more involved with his fellow passengers than they know, but who is he? Where is he going, and why?

1892 can be read as a short, standalone novella, and there’s no need to have read the Clearwater, Larkspur or Delamere series to enjoy the story. However, you might gain more from reading 1892 if you already know the characters and their histories.

    Jackson Marsh has gifted his readers another treasure from his Clearwater Tales.

    On a train bound for the Christmas Eve festivities at Larkspur Hall, a Baron, housekeeper, detective, antiquarian and a professor, relate to each other tales from their past.

    A priest is also in attendance but not for the same reason. He is made welcome to their first class coach, and becomes privy to their personal stories.

    Each story gives us a closer look into the background of the characters we have come to know through the previous stories associated with the Clearwater Mysteries.

    I especially enjoyed the Professor’s tale as his background was not divulged when we met him during the Larkspur Mystery series.

    I thoroughly enjoyed the tales and especially the final “priest’s” tale, which left me with a lump in my throat.

    I am so glad I discovered Jackson Marsh’s books. His story telling is expertly detailed that keeps you interested and wanting more, and he has a great sense of humor that he instills into his characters.

    1892 (The Clearwater Tales) is a must read, and I strongly urge familiarizing yourself with Jackson Marsh’s other books.

    I can’t think of a better gift than this!

    I am thrilled to have found that the Larkspur/Delamere gang is still spinning more tales. Once again the characters come to life in the same endearing manner. And another surprise element to keep me wanting more. Now…on to the Delamere files.

    It is really fun bringing characters together in the setting of a train car and getting to know them better. Feels very personal and it's a nice change from the day to day interaction. Once again, another great set of stories from Jackson!!

    Jackson Marsh is one of our greatest authors who deserves so much more praise and accolades for his work than he currently receives. There, I've said it! And I've probably set the bar very high for this collection of short stories. But it needed to be said and when you read these stories you'll start to see why. That is, if you're new to Jackson Marsh. If you have read any of his other works, then I'm preaching to the converted. If you haven't though then this is a taster of what is to come when you jump into any of his full length novels. Particularly if you start with the Clearwater mysteries and see him create the world from which the rest of his creative genius flows.

    He is an author who, with the flick of his quill, will create the most real characters that will leap from the page and set up permanent residence in your head. They will engage you, scare you, make you laugh and make you cry. They will shine a light on the world that existed 200 years ago while making it feel contemporary and real. They will guide you through some of the best mysteries being written today and put you at the heart of breath taking adventure. Just ask me to name any characters by other authors that I've read recently and I will struggle. Ask me to name any from Jackson Marsh and I'll name enough to fill a book. In fact I'd struggle to know when to stop. This collection of short stories, cleverly bound together into a novella about a train journey, takes 5 characters from his various series and gives you a glimpse into other aspects of their lives not touched on in the full length novels. And although the book blurb says you don't need to have read any of his previous work I'm telling you now just to stop, and go and pick up the first book in any of his Clearwater, Larkspur or Delamere series and let yourself be fully consumed by the world he's created. You won't be disappointed. But if you're more in the mood for a canapé than the banquet Jackson Marsh normally serves, then 1892 is the perfect taster... albeit not nearly as satisfying.

    This book contains a mixture of different types of stories. We have the origins story, the amateur detective story, an insight into the nature of war as told in folk songs, and an hilarious romp through the gutters of London with one of the best characters Jackson Marsh has even written. So these are not your usual subjects to build an anthology on, but they do speak to the imagination of Jackson Marsh and touch on the wide range of material he includes in his full length novels. For me though a couple of them missed the original voice as heard in the full length novels, as some had their narrative told from the voice of the eavesdropping priest or the train steward. So sadly we never got to properly hear Fecker's voice in his story, which as any fan of the Clearwater books will attest to, is always a scene stealer when it makes an appearance on the page. But that said it was a delight to hear Will's younger 12 year old voice tell his story as he recalled some of the banter he had with the magistrates during his first childhood court appearance. It just made you love this character even more. And so to not have read any of Jackson Marsh's earlier novels does diminish the impact these short stories have as you don't have that close connection with the characters that would make you appreciate them all the more. The priest's story is so much more emotional if you already know Silas' own backstory. But, if you only have a few hours in your day to read something, then this collection gives you a wonderful taste of what this great author is capable of. Just know, that the novels take these characters, and their adventures, up quite a few notches and give you a reading experience that these short stories merely hint at.

    I loved this collection and look forward to hearing more as promised by the author. But what I look forward to more is another one of his great adventures that's bound to satisfy the hungry appetite these mere morsels have whetted. Delamere Files Book 3 next, isn't it? I can't wait.

    I was so very impressed with this book. It allows the reader to dig deeper and get to know more about some of the wonderful characters from Clearwater and Larkspur. . As always, there was a surprise. As with many of Jackson Marsh's novels, I ended up staying up later than I should have because I couldn't put the book down!
    Highly recommended.
