Shooters!: A Natalie McMasters Mystery (The Natalie McMasters Mysteries Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

Who's your daddy?
Award-winning author Thomas A Burns Jr. spins another mind-blowing tale about twentysomething detective Natalie McMasters and her unlikely family that’s torn from today's headlines. This time Nattie is preggers (?!) and unsure of the father. The candidates? Her husband Danny, the love of her life, or her biological father, who cruelly had his way with her.
Complicating the situation, her Uncle Amos's 3M Detective Agency is hemorrhaging money, and even the estate that houses Nattie, the agency and the fam is at risk.
Her quakeworthy solution? An infamous social media influencer and unapologetic misogynist is bringing his totally unwoke nude beauty pageant to Capital City and wants to hire 3M to provide security for its million-dollar prize. Her hormones raging, Nattie gets it that a cool mil would make all her money troubles vanish. But she doesn’t know that a malevolent enemy from her past is back and gunning for her…
Meanwhile, her foster son Eduardo has his own problems. Humiliated at school, he falls under a deadly influence that sends him racing toward an unimaginable act of violence that will change his young life forever.
The astonishing ending is like nothing you've ever seen in contemporary crime fiction and will totally leave you reeling.
You'll truly get why Natalie McMasters is "a detective for the new millennium".

The Natalie McMasters books are a guaranteed adrenalin rush. SHOOTERS! is no exception. As Nattie and the fam become embroiled in one hot-button issue after another, it's hard to put the book down until the very end. The writing is raw and uncompromising. The story is relevant to our times.

From the title, it is safe to assume that the plot will deal with a mass shooting. Whenever such an event occurs the media demands the name of the shooter(s), the names of the victims, and the motive that triggered the behavior. Burns has written convincingly of the possible events that could provoke a mass shooting event. He presents some interesting situations that certainly could point to motive.

SHOOTERS! is a book written for adult audiences. Your idea of adult may differ from mine, but the language and situations are something I would not share with a child. On the other hand, the text contains the shorthand and acronyms used by millennials. Do you know what OTOH means? I'm getting better at sussing out the meanings, but I did have to look up TERF. Lucky for me, the Kindle dictionary provided an answer with just a touch of my finger.

The important thing to remember about the Natalie McMasters books is that they offer a microcosm of what many perceive as the seedier side of human nature. Capital City is any southeastern capital that offers a glimpse into a diverse population where anything can happen. Nattie herself is any brash young woman ready to take on the world.

The first paragraph in the Prologue to SHOOTERS! screams masculine toxicity, and it ends with a flashback to the abuse Nattie suffered in SISTER! Everything in these introductory pages lets you know that this is a series to be read in order. So put on your big girl panties and take the plunge into the world of Natalie McMasters starting with STRIPPER! It is a series you will not easily forget — even if you try.

Shooters is a very well written and fast paced tale that describes a family facing several challenges, dilemmas, and personal threats. It is very much a Greek tragedy wrapped around the MAGA-misogynist culture wars and desperation from a middle school boy wrongly accused of attempted rape and ostracized from his mother to the point where he falls in with the wrong element. The strongest and most moving characters were Natalie and Eduardo. Where the book fails in my opinion is the writers reliance of sexual scenes and vulgarities in an apparent attempt, in my opinion, to make a point and convey realism. One sexual scene I will not divulge here was not necessary to move the plot. While not for me, if you take away the over described sex scenes and references, this is a book that could appeal to fans of mysteries and suspense thrillers. 3.5 rounded up to 4.

Another action packed story that I could not stop reading. Very well written with no boring sections. It was tough to read Eduardo's awful experience at a party with his classmates and his need for revenge, but unfortunately it's a realistic story in today's society and it makes us aware of issues such a bullying, prejudice against a student from a different country, and people's obsession with guns as a way of addressing personal problems. Tom's story includes issues surrounding transgenders beliefs, hatred towards transgenders and our attitudes towards women. As usual Natalie's life is in a turmoil with twists and turns every page. The ending leaves the author with a huge opening for the next book.

A book where even my review needs trigger warnings so here goes: Several flavors of SA, relentless anti-transgender bile, an entire Mental Floss slideshow of Millennial/Gen-Z slang, school shooters, and a number of stereotypical tropes and dialects. By a "number of" I mean most of them. I don't think there was an Armenian character.
There are three main storylines to keep up with:
The titular Natalie, impregnated by her biological father, is waiting for a DNA test before considering abortion because she is a Catholic. To fix her family's money problems, she plans to win the nude beauty pageant by charming the alpha male, chauvinist host, and his brother, with her three-month-old baby bump. She casts aside her intrepid detective past and fully embraces her ex-stripper side.
The titular shooter, Eduardo, a child of Natalie's thruple, already damaged in last week's episode, is at twelve years old emulating his male role models seeing as how he's already killed a man. He gets bullied by classmates and groomed by an older boy to shoot up the school.
The titular—uh, some guy named Irwin, who made a deal with Natalie for sex in return for information on a case, "goes too far" instead. She crushed his testicles, so now that he's no longer a man, infiltrates transgender society to get revenge. The whole length of the book he gets beat up, arrested, and sexually assaulted.
This is the first 70% of the book and the only things that could be called action are the indignities heaped on Irwin. He's a bigot so it's fine. No one DNF's at 70% so I won't spoil the ending.
Burns is a technically skilled writer and I have to point out I don't think for an instant that the hostile, messy tone of this book is anything less than a style choice. It's about hostile, messy people, and I wish those aspects of it were less believable. It is written intentionally to offend the moderate to easily offended, so, you know, well done.
