Inferno: A Billionaire, Enemies To Lovers Romance (The French Quarter Trilogy Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 203 ratings

The thought of you is a fire that never dies, a warmth that both comforts and destroys.

I came back to New Orleans after a decade and a half. This wasn’t the homecoming I expected.

My brother’s been arrested for murder. Someone’s targeting my sister and her new husband. And then there’s Detective Nichola (Nick) Renault—the woman who ignited a firestorm of pain in me fifteen years ago, a fire that still burns today.
To uncover the truth behind the threats to my family, I’m forced back into the family business I despise. The only person who can help me? The very woman who drove me away.

As Nick and I dig into old family secrets and unearth alliances shrouded in darkness, I find myself caught between a burning desire and a blistering hatred.

In the shadows of the bayou, where love and danger dance to a jazz beat, one wrong move could set everything ablaze.

Chapter 1: Blaze

"Do you have a death wish?" Nick snarled as I pushed her against a wall outside the police station.

In response I put my hand between her legs and lifted her off her feet, pinned her against the wall. Fear ran in her eyes. Good. I wanted her scared. "What the hell do you think you're doing mixin' up with my family, Spice?"

She swallowed, her hands on my shoulders. "First, my name is Nick. Don't call me Spice."
"Why?"
Because I did when I tasted you?

She took a deep breath. "Blaze, you need to set me down before a cop sees you and arrests you for assaulting a police officer."

"You think they'll arrest a Doucet in N'awlins, dawlin'?"

She closed her eyes for a moment, and I wanted...I so wanted to kiss her. The one time I had with her had been...
had been why Seth killed himself, I reminded myself. The pain of his death, of finding him and reading his suicide note seared inside and raw anger flashed through me.

"You're going to back off this case and they'll get someone else on it. Don't make me talk to Hines."

Garrett Hines was the Chief of Police. My Grandpère, Lucien Doucet had helped him become chief, he owed the Doucets more favors than I could ever cash.

"Blaze?" I heard my brother call out. I waited a moment and jerked my hand away from between her legs and she managed to catch herself before she fell. She wasn't short. Nah, Detective Nichola Renault was what five ten, five eleven? Looked like a supermodel with those never-ending legs and a face that the almighty had to put together by picking the best genes from her French father and Creole mother. Her eyes were velvet brown, and I knew they changed color, became darker when she was aroused.

I hadn't seen her in nearly a decade, and she was still delicious—not a girl of eighteen anymore but a woman. Her body was tougher, leaner. As I'd held her up I'd felt her thigh muscles. I wanted to feel them around my flanks. I wanted inside her.

"Right here, Z," I called out to my brother. He peeked around the wall and shook his head.

"Seriously? I've been arrested for murder and you're doing...actually, I don't want to know what you're doing."

I walked over to Zephyr and waited for Nick to find her way to us, into the light, in front of the Orleans Paris Criminal District Court on Tulane Avenue.

She'd arrested Zephyr for suspicion of killing our cousin—I'd pulled my law license so fast, it made her head spin and before she could finish processing his fingerprints, I had him out on bail.

Dale Portnoy, the Night Court Judge, didn't want to mess with a Doucet, no matter that I had very little to do with Bayou Belle, the family business. I was a Doucet and that was enough to make or break careers in Louisiana.

"I'm his lawyer of record, Spice, you want to talk to him again, you call me first, got it?" I enjoyed watching her wince when she heard me call her Spice again.

"
You taste like cinnamon, Nichola. I can't get enough of you, Spice."

"Between us, I don't think Zephyr killed Yves. But...you did bang him up but good, Z and we had no choice. I'll check your alibi and I'm sure the ADA will drop the case," she sounded sincere but then she always had, even as she pushed Seth to hang himself in his apartment.

"This ADA new?" I demanded.

Nick nodded. "Yeah, Grace Carta. Moved here from out West."

"And she insists on prosecuting Zephyr?" I snarled. "And a judge actually gave you a warrant against a Doucet? You tell her and you tell that judge that Blaze Doucet holds a grudge like a jazz trumpeter holds a note in the heart of the Quarter—long, loud, and impossible to ignore."

"Judge Emerson, as you know, is not a fan of the Doucets." Nick tucked her hands in her jeans and rocked on her heels. I had to give her credit, she was behaving rather calmly after what I'd put through in the past few hours.

I had been openly hostile, to the point her partner had put his hands on me, "Blaze, man, I'll put you down if you call my partner a bitch again. Do you hear me?"

Detective Ash Steele could go screw himself. We knew each other since he was in high school. He'd been drafted by the Saints and after his first injury he'd joined the NOPD. Nick, I knew, joined the FBI and then all of a sudden, for no reason, took a demotion as a detective in the NOPD. I'd not bothered to find out the details, but I'd do so now. She was a snake and I wanted to know how to defang her.

"You let Emerson know that just like you, he'll also pay," I growled.

"Blaze, cut it out man. This isn't her fault or her choice," Zephyr tried to broker peace as he always did. "Nick, thanks for everything."

"All in a day's work,
sha. You take care, Blaze. I'll see you around."

If I thought I'd intimidated her, I could think again.

Hell. She sashayed away from us, and left me watching her very fine ass.

I loved this book because it was different from the other books that Maya writes.

    This book is BWWM.

Inferno is the 2nd book in the New Orleans series and it's the first book that I read from it. Blaze slept with Nikola aka Nick, once, and after something tragic happened to his friend he mistakenly blamed Nikola for that was not her fault. For years they were separated but he still held her in his heart and even tattooed something on his body to remember her by.

A death in his family brings him back home and the arrest of his brother brings him back into contact with Nikola. Whew does he let her know that he cannot stand her and that she better do her job to find out who set her brother up and tried to kill his sister.

As they interact the more Blaze sees that Nick isn't the villain he remembers and that Nick has been through some things. Blaze also can't get the pretty brown thang off his mind and keep his nature from rising when he sees her either and after a while he can't stay away from Nick once he realizes that she's also in danger as she investigates his family.

Nick is a strong FMC that doesn't take any crap but she does know when to give in and be soft when needed. She learned how to let Blaze be there for her.

Blaze is pure Alpha, loyal, who protects his family and doesn't play about his woman.

Can't wait to read book 3 about Blaze's brother and the stuffy DA.

It’s a good story for sure! Almost wouldn’t call it primarily romance through because the mystery plot is heavy. Interested to see what happens next.

This book was good. I love how Nick and Blaze are protecting and loving each other also their own families too. Even though they have complicated situations they are still maintaining good, “naughty”, trusting relationship. Nick is very brave and strong person, I love when she did not give up on life and Blaze was helping her to go back to her previous job and take revenge what that monster did to her. Nick had horrifying past (I cried when bad things happened to her in past) I’m glad that she was still working hard, had amazing partner, boss also she was taking care of miss Imogen that was so sweet of her( I love them, they are really good and funny people). I would recommend everyone this book to read.

This series is getting better and better with each book. We have Nick and Blaze come together and try to solve on who wants Rome and Blaze taking out of the picture. There are so many twists and turns, I think I know who is involved but I am not telling your going to have to read this series.

The chemistry between Nick and Blaze is off the charts, that you can feel the heat coming off the pages.
If you love suspense, mystery and some spice this is a book/series you must read!

“My love for you is bigger than my fear”

Maya Alden is amazing at incorporating both romance and mystery into her books! If you’re a fan of romantic suspense, check out her upcoming book Inferno! This book does touch upon some difficult topics, so please view trigger warnings before reading. Although this book is a standalone, I suggest reading the first book Quake to better understand the storyline!

Nichola, better known as Nick, is a feisty police detective who does her job with integrity and honesty. She has gone through so much from losing a close friend to experiencing awful trauma during one of her cases. Due to her traumatic experience, she does have several insecurities about herself. However, throughout the book, she is able to work through her insecurities and open up to those she loves.

Blaze, a tattooed billionaire/ jazz musician, is such a strong character. He deeply cares for his brother Zephyr and his sister Gaia. He does everything he can to protect his family even if it means getting involved in a case, with someone he used to have feelings for.

At the beginning of the story, Blaze and Nick have a bit of miscommunication about a tragedy that occurred when they were both in college. Instead of talking it out, Blaze immediately blames Nick and stops speaking to her for years. However, as the story progresses, the two characters reconnect and work through their miscommunication. Blaze and Nick’s relationship is full of love, spice, and suspense!!!

    I can’t wait to read Zephyr’s story!

Oh my gosh, this novel kept me on the edge of my seat while I was reading this novel. I have read other novels by this author and loved them and this novel did not disappoint. This novel hit the spot for me. I love a novel that has suspense, danger and a great romance. From the first chapter this novel sucked me in and held on tight. I did not put this novel down it kept me on the edge of my seat reading because I needed to know what was going to happen next. Blaze and Nichola past relationship was ruined due to a misunderstanding and communications that tore them apart. I loved the their characters. I loved Blaze, once he realized what had happened in the past he worked to make it up to Nick. I loved their chemistry. It was so good! I can't wait to see what this author has coming next.

This second book is full of twists and turns, it keeps you guessing about who the villain is; you have many to choose from. One of the best things about Ms. Alden books, is that while you’re trying to figure out where the next twist is going to take you; you still get a heart warming love story that is completely believable within the suspense. You get to see characters from the first book and hints of the next book.
Can’t wait for the next book.
