"One of my absolute favorite aspects of this book was the [serial] killer's point of view. I was trying to piece together who the killer could've been throughout the entire book. The reveal was absolutely perfect, the motive was well-thought out, and the action was so intense!"

From the Author
They recited poetry when they worked.
"As lady from her door, emerged; a summer afternoon," they crooned to the woman lying on her stomach on the metal table, her legs and hands tied down with ropes, her body arranged like Vinci's Vitruvian Man.
The caterpillar before them was immobilized, but could still make sounds. They'd gag her, but then they'd miss her transformation from caterpillar to butterfly. She was their first caterpillar and thus special. She had silky, milky white skin. They stroked her back, and she whined.
"Please don't. Please don't," she begged.
They chuckled. Did she really think that they'd go to all this trouble and then not do what they were meant to do—help her become what she was destined to be?
At least she'd stopped screaming for help because that shit had gotten old real fast.
"Her pretty parasol be seen, contracting in a field," they continued as they dipped the tattoo injector into black ink. They put the injector on the caterpillar's skin. She screamed. They smiled as they assisted in her transformation.
The butterfly was whimpering softly by the time they were done. In the past, the Butterfly Killer used to end with a flourish—showing off their calligraphy skills as they inscribed the words of Emily Dickinson: From cocoon forth a butterfly.
But this time, they would dedicate this butterfly to a caterpillar they knew would make the most beautiful butterfly of them all. The Butterfly Killer had only gotten a quarter of the way through last time with her, but this time, oh, this time, they'd go all the way.
The caterpillar on the table sobbed.
Ungrateful bitch.
They were giving her a chance to be so much more, and she was whining and moaning. Just like their mother. Always complaining.
The moon cast a ghostly glow over their studio, where shadows danced like specters. They moved silently, a wraith in the darkness, their breath a measured hiss. The garrote, a mere whisper of wire, was already singing its silent song of death in their hands.
They slipped the garrote around her neck, the wire biting into her skin with a lover's caress turned lethal. Slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly—they saw her transform, rise beyond the earth, and become a glorious creature. She gagged and gurgled, her body clamped to the table, danced in desperation, and oh so gently, she became a butterfly. Her gasps became ragged whispers, and then those whispers disappeared as she soared and ascended.
Then, silence.
Next time, they'd want to see her eyes as life left her. Next time, they'd do things just a little differently so the butterfly would be theirs and theirs alone.
They stood over her, the wire now a crimson necklace in their hands. Their heart was a drumbeat of triumph and terror. Feeling that rush and throbbing between their legs, they found their release in the quiet of the night as they tattooed on the butterfly's back: Sweet Caroline, are you ready to become a butterfly?

- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2025It took a little while for me to work up to reading this book because of trigger warnings. That being said I am glad I finally read the book. As with all of Maya’s books it approaches the triggers with class and compassion. Amy M.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2024Even though I picked up on the early clues and knew... mostly who the killer was, this was a good read. Flowed well with not too much thought life and had nice dialogue. Kinda wish the ending wasn't what it was. I mean we get it...they like to...you know. I would have liked to seen closure in the form of the case and the response when the guilty...trying not to leave spoilers....learns he failed.
Worth the read
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2024All I can say is wow. I was blown away by this book. The characters were engaging and the plot well written. This is the first book that I have read by this author but it will not be my last. I finished this book within I to 2 days. I was drawn into this story by the level of commitment displayed between Caro and Auerlio, and the entire Santos family. There have so much affection for each other. That kind of love is healing. I am was happy that Caro is getting to experience such devotion.
As a Mental Health provider and a victim of trauma, I applaud the writers accurate depiction of Caro's response to living with trauma.
The author demonstrated a great deal of sensitivity in her handling of this topic. Caro was a strong and accomplished woman who was made stronger by allowing Aurelio to support her throughout this story. Caro did not allow her trauma history define her as a person.
She was a warrior, brave before, during and after her ordeal. She has come out stronger. She didn't let Stoller Senior break her or his son.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2024This book took me by surprise. I read all the trigger warnings, so I thought I knew what was coming. I have read all the previous Golden Knight book and have enjoyed the series a great deal!
The depth of character Ms. Alden created in Vega, astounded me, staying true to the characters she had shown us in the previous books, it all came together.
She choose to write a fierce, and compelling cast of characters and weave them into a frighteningly realistic plot line while still giving us a HEA.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2025Vega was such a bad*ss! And I just loved how strong and caring Aurelio was :) Vega definitely needed someone like him to hold onto while she was dealing with her trauma. Great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2024I loved this book so much! Aurelio and Caroline's characters won my heart! This book brought so much emotion! There is suspense and fear about the serial killer. Caroline suffer severe trauma which still affects her years later. It affects how she approaches relationships and how she trusts. I loved how Aurelio supports Caroline through all of it. He listened to her and understood but stayed. He held her and loved her through so much! He made sure she was safe and through all of that Caro was able to see she could trust him. I can't say enough how much I loved this book. I have reread it multiple times. I highly recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars poorly edited
I love Maya Alden’s books and this is the first book of hers I have come across that was poorly edited. Words were missing in sentences, wrong tense of verbs. The enjoyment of reading was taken away when sentences had to be read twice. That is why I have given it only two stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A change of pace
Caro/Vega and Aurelio’s story is completely different to the others in the Golden Knights series, and represents a shift away from Ms Alden’s usual genres. It’s always a risk to change things up but in this case, the gamble paid off. It’s very clear this book has been well-researched to give the procedural part of the story credibility. Ms Alden chose to use four POVs instead of her usual two, which really added to the suspense.
Out of all the changes, I appreciated the difference in the relationship between Caro and Aurelio most. Caro is the one who is reluctant to commit further in their relationship due to her traumatic past, while Aurelio is patient, loving and steadfast. He never puts a foot wrong and their relationship is never in jeopardy across the book.
All up, I really enjoyed this fast-pasted, suspenseful thriller and I strongly encourage Ms Alden to write more books like this in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read book from a must read series
It's not everyday that you leave all your work coz you just want to finish the book you started ☺️
What started as a love series, definitely ended with a bang. All along the series, Vega was around, but always like an enigma
And her on and off relationship with Aurelio was one which wasn't much highlighted except for the fact that she had thrown her drink at him 😛
And when you start reading her book, there's no stopping till you know what's happening here
The story is gripping and chilling right from the beginning and you cannot leave it unfinished
I am in love with Aurelio, who always has Caro's back, no matter what... who stays in the background, understands her and silently supports her at every stage... I wish all our men were like him 🥰
The way Maya has handled the complex human emotions, be it Caro, Soller, the killer or everyone else involved is commendable, and this entire series is highly recommended for a pleasant reading experience
Like the blurb says- R u ready to face the butterfly 🦋

5.0 out of 5 stars The love that survived
Omg! What did I just read! This book is actually the first of its kind that I read as it made me struggle with the curious brain of mind who couldn't stop pondering over the culprit. It was unputdownable as I finished it in a few hours putting all my heart and brain into it. I am so fudging glad that I guessed the killer in the beginning itself. I loved the kind of love they had. A man like Aurelio is a blessing who knows how to protect, cherish and unconditionally love her tough self. His patience that broke her walls and her strength to let him in remains the best part. Every inch of this book was precious and I loved feeling this journey up close with my curious eyes scanning every scenario and invested heart swooning over their love. A beautiful read!
