- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2023Returning to Michael Embry’s John Ross series, which centers on the retirement years of a Boomer generation couple, is one of those pleasures I look forward to like visiting a dear old friend. It’s not that Cradle of Conflict lacks drama and suspense. The novel possesses those, but as I follow the charming and unfailingly fair-minded John Ross in his navigation of thorny problems, I find great comfort in his handling of everyday woes that can swell into extraordinarily challenges.
Those problems build and John keeps walking the dog, getting his mother-in-law Geraldine something else to eat, kibbitzing with friends, supporting (financially and emotionally) his son Brody, and, most importantly, thinking. “He thought about Sasha leaving with the Garcias. Brody’s job prospects. Glory’s son. Even Geraldine’s mystery love life.”
John Ross is smart and clever – he has wonderful exchanges with the cantankerous Geraldine and his holy roller in-laws – but he is also humble and willing to revisit his errors, learning from them. So much for a 68-year-old not learning new tricks. He has to rethink his understanding of drug abuse, crime, and relationships. And he does so with humor throughout. As the title indicates, the focal point of this novel is his new granddaughter, Sasha. While I don’t want to give away many of the plot revelations, the struggles and emotional stress John’s family endures fulfill Embry’s sweet spot in these novels: where the everyday becomes the exceptional.
As I opened this review, reading Cradle of Conflict makes me feel like I have reunited with family, a family at times troubled, but always engaging and kind. These novels help me look at America’s problems today with a template of how to move forward, buoyed by its big-hearted, rational patience. May Michael Embry keep writing this John Ross series. They fill a wonderful niche for a graying America that has both feet out of the nursing home as they step in to help the generations that follow.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2023As usual, I enjoyed reading another John Ross Boomer book. It was good catching up with John and Sally and their family. This series of books reflects so many things that seniors deal with as we are growing older. Things do not always get easier. Many of us deal with adult children that are struggling with everyday life and need our support. Many of us have health issues. We suffer through loss of family members and friends. We can make it through these times with the support of family and friends. Family is important. We can even be a help to people that don't have other support. I highly recommend this book and the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2024The latest in Michael Embry's John Ross Boomer Lit series is an honest, open look at the realities of modern America family life--the good, the bad, and the ugly. Embry's direct, concise prose is perfect fit for Cradle of Conflict, and he frequently adds a dash of humor to a storyline that has its dark moments. This series is well worth exploring, and Cradle of Conflict is a great place to start. If you want a good, enjoyable, realistic story to read, this is a book for you!!
