4.4 out of 5 stars 746 ratings

A reluctant daughter. A dutiful wife. A mystery of the ages.

Languedoc, France, 2018
Historian Madeleine Winters would rather research her next project than rehash the strained relationship she had with her late mother. However, to claim her inheritance, she reluctantly agrees to stay the one year required in her late mother’s French home and begins renovations. But when she’s haunted by a female voice inside the house and tremors emanating from beneath her kitchen floorboards, she’s shocked to discover ancient human bones.

The Mediterranean coast, AD 777
Seventeen-year-old Nanthild is wise enough to know her place. Hiding her Pagan wisdom and dutifully accepting her political marriage, she’s surprised when she falls for her Christian husband, the Count of Carcassonne. But she struggles to keep her forbidden religious beliefs and her healing skills secret while her spouse goes off to fight in a terrible, bloody war.

As Maddie settles into her rustic village life, she becomes obsessed with unraveling the mysterious history buried in her new home. And when Nanthild is caught in the snare of an envious man, she’s terrified she’ll never embrace her beloved again.

Can two women torn apart by centuries help each other finally find peace?

Love Lost in Time is a vivid standalone historical fiction novel for fans of epoch-spanning enigmas. If you like dark mysteries, romantic connections, and hints of the paranormal, then you’ll adore Cathie Dunn’s tale of redemption and self-discovery.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"From the richness of Charlemagne's court and the regret of a daughter, as she stands over her mother's grave, to the realisation of an enemy and a skeleton under the kitchen floor, Love Lost in Time: A Tale of Love, Death and Redemption by Cathie Dunn is the unforgettable story that traverses two very different times." ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~ The Coffee Pot Book Club Award

"The narrative is
ripe with emotions as two independent women are pulled in unexpected directions... Both landscapes are beautifully penned for readers to easily get lost in. Additionally, the storylines are engaging, and each helped bring a satisfying conclusion to the other. An enjoyable tale about love, sacrifice, and self-discovery." ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~ Historical Novel Society

"The
historical details are beautiful, and a book which could easily feel oppressively sad is cleverly lightened with the use of romance and a satisfying ending. Well written and easy to read, the historical side may be a little more compelling, but the contemporary details add a layer that cannot be ignored!" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~ In'DTale Magazine

"In
Love Lost in Time, Ms Dunn creates a fascinating balance between a tragic love story set in the Visigoth empire of the eighth century, and a very modern historian on a quest to find her own personal history in picturesque Languedoc...

Thoroughly researched and beautifully told, both stories complement each other in narrative power and colourful scene-setting; and in the dual narrative the main characters are compelling - each a product of destiny and following their fate, regardless of the cost.

Fans of Kate Mosse will relish this book..."

Romance, jealousy, politics and intrigue; wrapped up in two French time zones, which are woven skilfully together."⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

From the Author

Love Lost in Time is a special project. It's partly based on a true story: former neighbours of ours in a small village found some bones and half a skull when they renovated their kitchen. The plot took off from there...I'm fortunate to live in the beautiful city of Carcassonne, and its fascinating history surrounds me. I enjoyed creating a family around Bellon, the first recorded count of Carcassonne, and show his challenges and successes. He found his match in Nanthild.I love writing about areas I live, whether that's Scotland or, now, the Languedoc. And with so much history on my doorstep, there will be more historical titles set in this stunning region soon.

Dunn has written a dual timeline in this book. One taking place in 777 and for a generation later, and the other is more current and contemporary. It was my good fortune that I knew each French word used, but no worries, as there is a short glossary in the back. Love is the greatest of all and this novel does not disappoint. I liked how both timelines melded together, yet each separate. Five stars.

I received an ARC for review.
In Charlemagne’s time a young woman named Hilda has been betrothed to Count Bellon of Carcassonne, a man she barely knows. She is nervous about her wedding to a man who lives a so far from her home and helps protects Septimania for Charlemagne, a position coveted by others. Despite their rocky start, she comes to love Bellon. Her new position as countess doesn’t stop her from following her calling as a wise-woman, but Septimania is a dangerous place and she can’t escape her enemies forever.

In the present, Madeleine has moved back to France following her mother’s death to renovate the house and sell it. Madeleine isn’t thrilled about the prospect of staying in the area, but that begins to change when she meets her handsome neighbor. Then strange things start happening in the house. When she searches for the cause of the events, she discovers bones under her kitchen floor. Madeleine sets out to determine what happened to the dead woman and bring her peace. Along the way she learns to find her own peace.

The interweaving stories of the present and past work well together. Hilda’s story gives more weight to Madeleine’s mysterious discovery and Madeleine’s story helps tie up the end of Hilda’s. This will be a great match for those who like stories that shift between the present and past. While there is mystery and intrigue, the romance helps lighten up the story to keep it from getting too tragic as does the happy ending. I can see this appealing to romance and historical fiction fans. Madeleine’s story adds a contemporary touch for those who don’t like stories too heavy on the history, giving this book wide appeal.

I gravitated more toward Hilda’s story than Madeleine’s, but I tend to favor historical over contemporary. I personally found myself favoring the excitement of the dangers Hilda faced over Madeleine's contemporary romance. The paranormal elements in Madeleine’s story were also accepted rather quickly, which meant I had to suspend my disbelief a few times.

Overall I recommend Love Lost in Time to those who love stories that intersect the present with the past with a dash of intrigue and romance.

I really enjoy a good dual timeline novel, and Cathie Dunn did not disappoint. The lead characters of Hilda and Bellon, Maddie and Leon are captivating and colorful. The time slip from modern times to the 700s, a period especially intriguing to me, was fast-paced and hard to put down. In addition, the two time plots are intricately woven to come together in a satisfying conclusion. This story is a must-read!

As a history nut and a Francophile, I enjoyed this dual timeline story very much. It’s set in a part of France that I know a little, which added to its already strong interest for me. But I didn’t know much about the era in which the historical part of the story is set – AD777 – so I learned something from reading this. I particularly enjoyed the details of everyday life during that period, which are cleverly woven into the story. The author also skilfully interlinks the stories of Maddie and Nanthild, the modern and the historical timelines. There’s a hint of the paranormal, but it’s not overpowering. A very satisfying read.

It was ok. Had a good chapter or two. But basically 2 different stories but just tied them together ot really having much to actually do with each other, other than the bones of one found by the other. Wasn't great. Wasn't terrible. Typical disdain for Christianity blaming the actions of some rulers as being the actions of the Church. typical bad history. Just disappointing in that regard completely.
The writing isn't bad. A bit clunky in places but overall good enough. It just wasn't for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars An evocative read for mystery lovers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 6, 2021
I really enjoy stories where the narrative moves between the past and the present and this novel by Cathie Dunn certainly fits the brief. Both plot lines are set in the beautiful area of Carcassonne in the Languedoc region of France, and the skilful detailing that Dunn employs in her story evokes for each a convincing sense of time and place.

The reader is taken on a journey through the lives of two different women. In AD 777, Hilda battles to retain her autonomy as a healer at a time when women were expected to do as they were told, and in the present day, Madeleine tries to come to terms with a new life while attempting to unravel, not only the mystery of her own birth but the puzzle of the ancient, human remains discovered beneath her kitchen floor.

If you enjoy mysteries with a strong historical element, a touch of romance, and a great sense of time and place, this should be right up your street!

Two timelines, France, women finding their own paths, a deep-rooted historical mystery and an equally intriguing modern mystery all wrapped up with romance – an enticing read.
The good writing and attention to detail stand out as does the characterisation. You will feel well anchored in each timeline. Treat yourself!
