From the Author

Thank you for reading my novels!
Highland Arms
was my first published novel, and I'm still very proud of it. The story is set in my favourite area of Scotland - on the shores of Loch Linnhe, close to dramatic Glencoe. If you visit Scotland, Glencoe should be on your itinerary.

Cathie Dunn writes historical fiction, mystery, and romance. The focus of her historical fiction novels is on strong women through time.

Cathie has been writing for over twenty years. She studied Creative Writing, with a focus on novel writing, which she teaches in the south of France. She loves researching for her novels, delving into history books, and visiting castles and historic sites.

At the moment, Cathie is working on two novels: Treachery, #2 in the House of Normandy series, about Sprota the Breton, handfasted wife of William Longsword, the son of Poppa and Rollo; and The Alchemist's Daughter, #2 in the Affair of the Poisons series. She also continues to plot a medieval murder mystery series set in 13th century Languedoc at the height of the Cathar persecutions.

Cathie's stories have garnered awards and praise from reviewers and readers for their authentic description of the past.

Ascent: The fictionalised story of Poppa of Bayeux, handfasted wife of Rollo (Hrólfr) the Viking. A historical novel about a strong woman who faced many challenges head on.

The Shadows of Versailles: Seduced at Versailles. Broken by tragedy. Consumed by revenge. A historical novel set during the infamous Affair of the Poisons.

Love Lost in Time: A paranormal dual-timeline mystery set in Carcassonne, south of France, in the present and in the time of Charlemagne. A winner of The Coffee Pot Book Club Award and Book of the Month at Discovering Diamonds Reviews, the story is ’beautifully told’ and ’compelling'. Love Lost in Time is also a Finalist in its category from The Coffee Pot Book Club.

A Highland Captive: Set during the Scottish Wars of Independence, A Highland Captive is a ’well-researched’ tale of bravery, of uncertainty, and of recognition of love. Winner of the Chill with a Book Award.

Highland Arms: A fast-paced romantic adventure set in the Scottish Highlands about smugglers, Jacobites and rebellions. A heroine with an insatiable curiosity encounters a Highland rogue. But dangers await!

Dark Deceit: An ’exciting' medieval mystery romance set in England and Normandy, Dark Deceit weaves a tale of murder, changing loyalties, betrayal and love.

Silent Deception: A ’thoroughly enjoyable’ gothic romance novella set in Victorian Cornwall. A young heiress uncovers a dark family secret with the help of a stranger. But he has secrets too. Silent Deception is free in ebook format.

This one really got my emotions going and I loved every second of it!!

This one really got my emotions going and I loved every second of it!!
This one really had me going! I was angry for Catriona and sad for her at the same time. I wanted to do something violent to her brother and his friends. Rory was somehow in the middle--but I was routing for him most of the time!! Of course it took him a bit to realize that Catriona was not who he thought she was! Catriona's godmother and Rory's aunt was a dear sweet woman--but did she ever know how to get things done!! This one really got my emotions going and I loved every second of it!!

Betrayed by her brother; Catriona MacKenzie is banished to the Highlands where she will be living a quiet life with her Godmother Auntie Meg's. What a surprise when she feels like she has come home when she reaches her destination. What a surprise when the very masculine handsome man she met on her way here turns out to be Godmother's nephew who also lives there. Her brother shows his true colors defaming her in front of them. Ruairidh Cameron or Rory to his friends has already heard of her reputation and thinks badly of her and fears she will cause problems with his fight for the Jacobite cause by her very presence there.
They have an interesting series of events that gradually change his view of her and he has been fighting his attraction for her from the beginning. She fell in love with him almost from the first time she saw him and is hurt as he always turns away from her.
I really enjoyed this story and how well written it is and will read any future books by Mrs. Dunn.

If an exciting, fast paced, all-engrossing tale is what you desire, then Highland Arms is the book for you! There are so many plot twists, all skillfully intertwined, that I had to keep my full attention on every word and, even then, still needed to re-read several passages to fully understand the direction the story was galloping towards. This was a wonderfully written story I didn't want to end. Cathie Dun is my new favorite author!

The story is mostly good. It had intrigue, misunderstandings, instant attraction and was paced well. I don’t particularly want the detailed sex scenes... I like my romance to be just that, romance. Please leave something to the imagination.

A different plot from the usual Highland story, but still having the usual problems with the English and romance between two unlikely people. Parts were sad, almost unbelievable family dynamics. Catriona did act irresponsibly and rash sometimes, which added more drama to the story when she had to be rescued; so I guess that is why the stupidity is in there. Other than that, I enjoyed the story and the different plot. The characters were well described and developed, and there seemed to be a lot of action and plot twists to keep me reading.

Kept me completely engaged. Intrigue, suspense, great story line and I very much appreciate the sweet romance WITHOUT being explicitly steamy. The focus is in the storyline which makes it all the more enjoyable.

The Highlands are a fantastic source for stories especially with romance and suspense added in. Their history of rebellion especially against the English leads to numerous tales of smuggling, revenge, intra clan disagreement, secrets, and a great deal of misery.
I enjoyed reading about this character falsely accused of having sexual encounter with her betrothed and sent to the Highlands to be out of sight. She meets the leader of the group smuggling guns for the rebellion.
Its a short view of those brave Scottish Highlanders who didn't give up.

Some great strong characters in Catriona and the rather dashing, Rory Cameron. This author has the reader hooked with tension, romance, emotion and able to almost feel fear and see life through her characters' eyes. Catriona's struggle to deal with a particularly nasty brother seems almost impossible, but she proves a strong and determined lady. Catriona's wish to live a different life to the one planned for her is not an easy route, but where there is a will there is a way, and Rory comes to her rescue, but he too faces many challenges along the way.

Cathie Dunn's historical fiction is is believable and her research into the background make the adventures visual and the result is a very enjoyable read. Recommended for long, cold winter nights.

Carhie Dunn takes you on an adventure to the Highlands. Her love for history is woven in a delicate pattern of love and deceit, a braw Highlander and a headstrong beauriful lady grant you a most entertaining read.

I usually don't read much romantic stories, I'm more the 'Medieval Mystery' reader but I can only recommend Highland Arms. It's a pleasure to spend time with Cathie Dunn's protagonists. My fav is the old aunty. ❤😉

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 13, 2019
This book tips further into the 'romance' category than I usually care for, but the love story is well done What I really enjoyed about Highland Arms though was the page-turning plot. It fair rattles along, with many twists and turns along the way. Crucially, the plot sits really well within the chosen time period, which is how all good historical fiction should be. The locations were particularly well-described, whether it be 'Aunt' Meg's house, the loch and the boat house, or the crowded streets and tenements of Edinburgh. The weather, so much part of Scottish life and pivotal to certain scenes in the book, were really well described, as was the cobweb infested tunnel! I had slight difficulty with the differences between American and English general use of the past tense, for example 'where he left two horses' which in English would have been written 'where he had left two horses' but I got used to it and it didn't mar my enjoyment of this past-paced, well-plotted story. Looking forward to reading the next installment.
