Prodigal: A Supernatural Crime Thriller (Dead Hollow Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 159 ratings

It’s happening again. And either Adam’s crazy, or he’s a kidnapped child’s only hope.

Drifter Adam Rutledge is haunted by his childhood, by how helpless he felt when his best friend was abducted and how terrifying it was to see the boy’s fate in his nightmares.

Twenty years later Adam is shaken by a vivid dream, one powerful enough to send him back to Cold Springs. But his Appalachian hometown never lost its mistrust of the orphaned boy who drew heartache like a lightning rod. Especially now that another child has been taken.

To find the missing girl, Adam must dig deep and solve the riddle of his own tragic past. When his efforts unleash visions he’s spent decades burying, his sanity stretches to the breaking point. And all the while, a man is watching and waiting in the shadows.

A madman who means to kill him.

Prodigal is the first book in the Dead Hollow psychic suspense trilogy. If you like crime thrillers with authentic characters and a dash of paranormal, then you’ll love Judy K. Walker’s haunting series.

The reading order for the Dead Hollow trilogy is:
1)
Prodigal: A Supernatural Crime Thriller2) Founder: A Supernatural Crime Thriller; and3) Heir: A Supernatural Crime Thriller

From the Back Cover

The fear returns in Prodigal.
Twenty years ago, children began disappearing from rural Beecham County: a boy on a camping trip, a girl walking home from school... And then it stopped.
Very slowly--month by month, year by year--children began to feel safe again, and parents began to sleep through the night.
Until now.
Adam Rutledge, who's spent his life adrift since losing his childhood friend to a man in the shadows, finds himself drawn back to Beecham County when another girl disappears. But to stop the unknown predator, Adam must reveal his deepest, darkest secret and embark on a path that may cost him his sanity... and his life.

A recovering criminal attorney, Judy K. Walker has enough spare letters after her name (and student loan debt) to suggest that insatiable curiosity is something fictional Tallahassee PI Sydney Brennan inherited from her creator. Fortunately, Judy’s curiosity rarely involves murders.

Born and raised in West Virginia, Judy returned to her roots in the Appalachian supernatural thriller Dead Hollow trilogy (Prodigal, Founder, and Heir). Now she's back at work on the next Sydney Brennan book.

Judy writes from her home in rainy East Hawaii, where she is surrounded by husband, feral pigs, and assorted geckos.

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH SYDNEY BRENNAN: Many authors say their characters are their alter egos, doing the things they've always wanted to do in the ways they wish they could do them. At the risk of sounding shallow, my private investigator Sydney Brennan--with her shoulder-length, curly red hair--is my Hair Alter Ego. It's hard to tell from the ancient, faded, pre-digital photo at the right, but when I was very young I had red ringlets of curls. (And yes, shockingly, that is a book in my hands.) They never grew back after my first haircut, and my mother still laments their loss. The red hue is long gone and as for the curls, the best I can do now is a persistent cowlick and the occasional unruly wave.

A unknown author who now is a favorite! Totally amazed this was such a good read. Good plot, storyline, editing and characters. The end was a tad rushed but the people continue on to the second book. The author reads fresh and energetic. This book was not a struggle to continue or finish. With 55 years in reading/exploring the written word I enjoyed this book. Give her a try. Continuing on to the next in series.

The supernatural part of this story was interesting to me. The details were a little vague but the main story about the rescue of the little girl was good. And the friendship of Adam and JJ was another part of the story I enjoyed. I' d like to read the other books in this series.

That Judy Walker is an amazing tale teller. I am always in awe of the way her descriptions make the story as vivid as if I were right there in it. Her characters are always interesting and real. The plot has enough twists that, like going around the hairpin turns on a mountain road in West Virginia, you do not see what's coming next. The style of this story is very different than in the Sydney Brennan series, and I liked getting inside the heads of more than one character. I didn't want to stop reading, because each scene leaves you wanting to go around that mountain curve and see what is next.

I am so happy I stumbled upon this trilogy. This is exactly what I've been looking for. Characters that draw you in. A storyline that makes you hungry to read the next sentence. Slow burn of character development, that gives you just enough to want more and to question everything.

    Good stuff. Truly.

This is an interesting mystery, entwined w/another earlier unsolved similar crime. I would've given 5 stars if it left out the supernatural ESP stuff & just used reasoning, guesswork, & detective thought to solve it. I don't like hocus locus. I'd rather read about the interesting thought processes & clues that lead to conclusions. ESP to me is just the easy way of avoiding working things out, avoiding the effort to write a good mystery/detective story & using drama/junk as a short cut. Because I like this author I got a free copy to read before it went public.

I have read several of Judy Walker's books and loved all of them. This book seemed to be of a different writing style, but is was compelling, full of suspense and character interaction. I could hardly put it down and am looking forward to reading the other two books in the series.

I really enjoyed this story. I wish the story explored the paranormal aspect more. JJ is an awesome character. I love her spunk. I thought the narrator did an excellent job. I received this audio book from the author for my unbiased review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were relatable and well developed. The supernatural aspect of the story was plausible. I usually find these types of stories tend to fall on the ridiculous side, and leave me wondering why I bothered! The author also has a good sense of small town backwoods life and culture. For once I didn't feel like I was reading a parody or an approximation of my rural view point. It was quite refreshing. All in all, a good story. I'm looking forward to reading more.
