Ruby Takes Chicago Kindle Edition
Ruby Takes Chicago, is the sequel to Rise! A Girl's Struggle for More. It's now the 1920s, and a young Ruby Dinsmore leaves her hometown of Oilton, Oklahoma and heads for Chicago to make her dreams come true. In the first book, Ruby, born in 1904, grows up wanting to be a businesswoman and does everything she can to make it happen. At the end of Rise!, Ruby's family realizes her dreams can only come true in a larger town where a young woman with a college education would be accepted in the workforce. Once in Chicago, Ruby is surprised to learn that, even in a big city, society as a whole is still reluctant to accept women working outside the home. Determined to stay true to herself, she takes on the challenges of life in tumultuous times of prohibition, protests, and women's rights marches. Ruby meets like-minded women, and together they break through the barriers until Ruby lands the perfect job; all amidst discovering the joys of life and love, and heartbreak...and love again.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2023Ruby Takes Chicago is a combination of historical fiction and biographical stories in the time of Prohibition, women’s rights, and the next generation looking to establish their place in the workforce
alongside the men.
Each chapter showcases a specific era of time in Ruby’s life. This makes the story easy to follow and keeps readers engaged.
Ruby is an interesting character. She knows the pitfalls out there for young women and is determined to dodge as many of them as she possibly can. Tragedy strikes many times throughout this book. Each moment brings life into perspective and a couple forces her to make shifts in her life that she may or may not have been prepared for.
One thing that you’re going to appreciate about this book is how the author doesn’t try to paint Ruby as this perfect character. She has her flaws and those flaws get showcased. With more detail into the story, this book would be perfect! You get her ups and downs, her heartbreaks, and her triumphs.
For readers who enjoy historical fiction novels that mix together with a biographical twist, specially of a woman making her way in a man’s world, this book is a great choice. Go grab a copy today.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024Ruby Dinsmore is a girl ahead of her time, and at twenty-one, she decides to leave her hometown of Oilton, Oklahoma to build a life of her own in the great city of Chicago. Once she arrives, she begins searching for a job, though finding one proves to be more difficult than she expects. And even when she begins working, she discovers that as much as technology and life have progressed in the big city, there are still plenty of antiquated beliefs about gender roles and workplace equality. Not one to be dissuaded, however, Ruby bravely puts one foot in front of the other as she continues working toward the life she imagines for herself.
This sequel to Rise! A Girl's Struggle for More continues the story of Ruby, a character inspired by the life of the author's own grandmother. The story transports readers back in time to the 1920s, when women have recently earned the right to vote, automobiles are becoming more commonplace, and speakeasies are found in some of the more hidden parts of the city. Ruby's voice and opinion, especially about the way women are treated, make her stand out from others in her immediate vicinity, and readers will appreciate the fresh approach Ruby takes to achieving what she wants in life. Things are not always easy for Ruby, however, and her tenacity is apparent as she continues to try despite failing in several of her attempts at her perfect future.
Because of the time frame in which this book is placed, frequent references to Christianity, Freemasonry, and middle-class white society form the backbone of this novel. However, Ruby is forward thinking and mentions the work of Black activists in her community, as well. The writing is accessible and the story moves quickly, though more time is spent in some portions of Ruby's years in Chicago than in others. This can occasionally be jarring for the reader, but it does help the plot progress. Readers interested in historical fiction and strong female protagonists will appreciate Ruby's story as she navigates her own desires against the backdrop of a more restrictive, patriarchal society. This is an intriguing addition to library collections for young adult readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2024Oklahoma author Diann Floyd Boehm is a former classroom teacher who now serves as a community volunteer, humanitarian, co-host for shows on USA Global TV, and author of THE LITTLE GIRL IN THE MOON (3 volumes), BOOMER AND THE CURIOUS BUNNY, A SONG OF PEACE, HARRY THE CAMEL, A TIME TO FLY!, CHARLIE AND THE TIRE SWING, RISE!: A GIRL’S STRUGGLE FOR MORE, and now the latter book’s sequel - RUBY TAKES CHICAGO.
In the initial volume RISE!, Ruby Dinsmore was in her hometown of Oilton, Oklahoma, and now as the title suggests, Ruby moves to Chicago with dreams of employment and fulfilling her ambitions. The period of the novel is the 1920s when some changes to life in America have occurred: women can now vote, the automobile is now considered essential, and in the darker streets of Chicago are speakeasies. Ruby’s character is near visual as the opening pages suggest: ‘The long charcoal-gray passenger train slowed down, blew its whistle, and pulled into the Chicago train station. Ruby sat there for a moment, in shock, She knew she needed to move, but it seemed impossible for her to really be there. Finally, she came out of her stupor, gathered her belongings, put her light-pink cloth hat on, and stepped off the train…’ A fine intro to the story that follows.
The author manages to spin a tale of how women dealt with the world changes by placing the ingenuous young Ruby in the challenges and conflicts that provide not only a fast-paced and fascinating novel, but also an invitation to revisit history. The progress Ruby faces is well delivered, gaining our involvement with each passing chapter. Yet in addition to the story there is another very important aspect of this book that honors the author’s sensitivity: the typeface is large (Dyslexie font) allowing readers with dyslexia to enjoy the book!
This is a very satisfying reading adventure on so many levels – a book that deserves a very wide audience!
