Home of Amasa and Lovina Crosiar, circa 1870
The setting for Home Place, the novel is the actual place the author still calls her Home Place decades after her family farm was sold.
'My Great-Great Grands built the house in the mid-1800s with lofty aspirations. I doubt it was ever quite as grand as this rendering makes it seem,' says Crosiar.

Northwest view of Crosiar farm, circa 1870
Like most farmers of the day, Amasa Crosiar raised cattle, hogs, sheep, and chickens along with the grain and hay to feed them.
The Pecumsagen Creek ran through the farm on its way to the Illinois River.
'That creek and the timber along it was a children's paradise. My sibs and I got up to so much trouble there!' says Crosiar.

Art by Nancy Lane
'We had few photos of our Home Place,' says Crosiar, 'And while a reader might not care, it was important to me that the house on the book's cover be my house - where I grew up. Nancy Lane helped recreate the home as it looked when I lived there.'

The house as it is now
'My Great-Greats left the farm to my Grands for their lifetime only, and then to their grandchildren hoping to keep the place in the family. It didn't work.'
The new owners turned the farm into a golf course and made major renovations to the house. 'I hardly recognize my old Home Place now,' says Crosiar. 'Which makes Nancy Lane's rendition of the place so very dear to me.'

About the Author
Sally Crosiar (rhymes with closure) set her novel HOME PLACE, in the house her great-grands built and where she lived until she was fourteen and her family's farm was sold. "This novel is my attempt to re-write history," Sally says. "Except how could one woman keep and maintain a 15-room, hundred-year-old house when so many obstacles stand in the way? And what if the lure of the future loosens her hold on her love of that place?"
Sally's debut novel COME BACK also delves into her rural and small-town roots and explores tough questions about deception, unintended consequences, and the terrifying risk of opening oneself to love.
"These kinds of questions are what keep my fingers glued to my keyboard," Sally says.
When she manages to unstick those fingers, Sally likes playing in, on, and near the water in her Finger Lakes home in upstate New York. She enjoys making wearable art and savoring fine red wines with deep dark chocolate.
Sally's other work includes:
FIND THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE based on how she and her first husband found each other - after both had nearly given up looking. Writing their love story helped Sally heal after his death and gave her the courage to use similar strategies to meet a new love and partner.
MY UNCLE DAVE a children's picture book with a grown-up message.
LOVE BUILDERS: VALIDATION TOOLS TO ENHANCE EVERY RELATIONSHIP co-authored with Dr. Sidney B. Simon.
"I've enjoyed all kinds of writing," Sally says, "but I'll give up reality for fiction every time. It's the best game of 'let's pretend' of all!"

About the author

Sally Crosiar (rhymes with ‘closure’) thrives on making stuff up! "I thought my writing focus would be self-help," she says, "Until the fiction bug bit deep. Suddenly the voices in my head had a purpose!" She describes herself as a 'pantser' when writing, focusing first on characters (those voices in her head) and then letting them spin out their stories. "I like making trouble for my characters. And they seem to like giving me pesky problems to solve. It's an introvert's version of fun - to play with people in one's head and not have to put on mascara and earrings to engage!"
Her most recent novel HOME PLACE is a story of sibling inheritance and conflict. HOME PLACE is set on the farm and hundred-fifty-year-old house where Sally grew up. "My family had to move from there when I was fourteen," she says. "And that left me with lots of feelings about the place - and a desire to re-write history. Of the place, not me." The question, Sally says, was whether Kat Patterson could manage to save her ancestral home as Sally's family could not. "I made up Kat - who's way more interesting than me - and all the other characters. Except Stupid-Odd the cow. She was real, so real I couldn't leave her out."
Sally's rural roots show too in her debut novel, COME BACK. "There's more drama in small towns than you might expect," she says. In COME BACK you'll see Sally's signature first-person multiple-points-of-view style. "The characters poke around in my head. Isn't it a fair turn-around to poke about in theirs?" She's especially drawn to themes of healing after trauma and how that happens - or doesn't. In COME BACK, most bystanders only see Vi Masters' polish until a reluctant visit to her hometown uncovers secrets and unforeseen consequences that forever alter the lives of four narrators.
Though fairly new to fiction, Sally is no stranger to writing. Shortly after losing her first husband, she published FIND THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE to share how she and Dave found each other. “We’d both been hurt, both nearly ready to give up on love. And then we both gave it one more shot. Lucky, lucky us!” That last shot at love involved a strategy Sally had never tried before. “I stopped looking for the perfect guy – and instead set a really clear goal for a relationship. Three weeks later, I met Dave who lost his sight eleven years before we met! But in my goal, I never said my partner had to be able to see! My goal kept me honest and pushed me to have the guts to give love with Dave a try. Thank all the stars I did!”
Writing about Dave and the love story he and Sally created helped her heal after his death. “We started the book before Dave died,” says Sally. “Finishing our story helped keep Dave with me – and eventually helped me see that with him, I’d learned too much about loving not to use what I learned. Eventually, I brushed off my goal and used it as my Match.com profile.” It took a little longer than three weeks the second time. “I started looking before I was really ready, is what I think,” Sally says. “But after so much grief, I did need to have fun again. And I was surprised to find that dating could be fun! Maybe I wasn’t old enough before.” Was she lucky to find love again? "More work than luck," she says. "But yes! Ray and I have been together for almost twenty years and the essential components of my goal? We've got those!"
Sally's other books include MY UNCLE DAVE, a children’s book with an adult message. “It’s an almost true story about when Dave, the blind guy falls into the swimming pool. And not just once. Twice in a week’s time! No kidding.” In the story and in life, Sally and Dave both learned that it’s not what happens to us, it’s how we react that makes all the difference. What Sally most likes are Ted Williams’ illustrations that bring MY UNCLE DAVE to life. “Ted captured my Dave wonderfully. When I look at some of the pictures, I can almost hear Dave cackle!”
In 2002, Sally teamed up with Dr. Sidney B. Simon of Values Clarification and Realization fame to co-author LOVE BUILDERS: TOOLS TO BUILD ANY RELATIONSHIP, filled with simple ways to share appreciation and love to the people who matter most.
She has also co-authored numerous health and youth development curricula as a consultant for Cornell University, including Choose Health: Food, Fun, and Fitness (2015), Choose Health in 4-H Clubs (2012), Youth Development Foundations for 4-H Camp Staff (2003), Growing Healthy Girls (2002), and more.
Sally lives in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York where she loves playing in, on, and near the water, creating wearable art, savoring fine red wines from sunnier climes, and reading, reading, reading. In addition to writing, she teaches adults how to influence kids' health, play, and learning.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2021I imagine that everyone who has ever given a knock on the door of a home they grew up in, or received a knock on the door from someone who grew up in the home you live in, will immediately find the welcome door open in the pages of Home Place. It won't take but the two first chapters of Home Place to become fully engaged in the characters of Kat and Whip. They each have their own font, which for me, served not only to define their character, but to enliven their story as it unfolds. There is a lot of energy between friends and family, between the homestead and its past, and in the rich, dynamic history of the rural community in which they live and seek to change with the progression of time. But, just what that means lies at the very soul of the story. I just recently connected personally to the author when she found me through a genealogy program. We share the second great-grandparents who built the Home Place, which serves as inspiration and foundation to this story. My grandfather spent his boyhood summers on that farm. I even swam with him in the creek there when I was a child. Though I didn't grow up on a farm, or even in a rural area, I felt this story go straight to the heart, becoming my own heartland. It's so relatable on many levels. How often do we find our ourselves wondering about the past, of those who came before us, of those whose shoulders we stand upon, and wonder how they felt, lived and endured their own struggles, or even why we all feel what we do? The flow of time connects us and resonates in our very souls, as we ultimately work through our own issues and arrive at a place of resolve, just like Kat and Whip, through the power of the written word. That's why we read. This is why you will enjoy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A light read
'Home Place' is a story involving romance, family history, inheritance and a complex bond between siblings. The story was good, a satisfying read, but must hold much more significance to the author who underwent a situation similar to the one in the book, except that her own story didn't end happily. So, I appreciate the positive way in which she rewrote this story, I imagine it must have brought some solace to her.
The book itself is narrated by the two main leads, neatly taking their turns to share their P.O.V.s. The narration was crisp, engaging and well-paced. The plot itself was nice too.
However, the writing was not easy for me to follow. The characters spoke in broken, incomplete sentences. It's okay for a poem, but not for a whole novel! At times, I struggled to find the context.
Then the problem with the shoddy editing/proofreading. Missing punctuation marks, articles, prepositions, typos and such.
That was not all - the author got obsessed with some words and overused them - rape the land, Neanderthals, rat bastards. That made me cringe enough times to drop a star all by itself.
The characters were okay. I liked the hero Whip, I found the heroine Kat tolerable, I found the heroine's best friend Darcy despicable but the hero's mother quite likeable. The dogs seemed nice too.
But I didn't enjoy the build-up about Scott's mysterious death. It felt a little underwhelming in the end.
Overall, an okay book. Didn't wow me, but also didn't make me abandon the story after a few chapters. I might read more by this author, but with the right expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Home Place
I couldn’t put the book down I was so caught up in the story of Kat and Whip.
Today so many authors use foul language and explicit words of the love scenes so to read a book that doesn’t have those is my kind of book. A pleasure to read.

A little bit of everything. Drama, love and loss. Easy to read and enjoyable. It seems to skim the edges without dwelling on anything.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heritage
Home Place is a story of a family of various characters and how their different reactions to tragedy shaped their future. A small, close knit community, support the feisty main character. A well constructed plot produced a book that I enjoyed reading.
