The Sweetest Taboo: A Boyfriend's Brother, Second Chance Love Story (A Modern Vintage Romance) Kindle Edition
I fell for a woman for the first time in my life. I never thought the winds of Montana could carry in a storm like Isha George. She's stunningly beautiful. Years younger than me. Definitely a gold digger. She's charming, elegant, and she's my younger brother's girlfriend.
When Isha sweeps into my life, I’m sure she’s a tempest hiding behind a smile as bright as sunshine. And, she has her eyes on the prize - a piece of the Ledger Ranch. My ranch.
So, I do what any good brother and ranch owner would. I steal her away and then proceed to break her heart.
Now six years later, I see her again. We've both grown up, but one thing hasn't changed. I still want her, more desperately than I ever did before. And if there’s the one thing I learned during our time apart, it’s that I'm in love with her even more than I was. I always have been. I always will be. But will she ever forgive me for what I did?

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2025The Sweetest Taboo is a modern vintage romance. Isha George takes a vacation with her friend, Ace to his family's Montana ranch. Ace wants to make his ex jealous by introducing Isha as his girlfriend. She reluctantly agrees and allows him to do so even though she does not like deceiving people. She is from England and has struggled all her life to make ends meet and doesn’t like being dishonest.
She meets his older brother Rowan and sparks fly. Rowan thinks she is a golddigger because she is spending time with him even though he thinks she is his brother’s girlfriend. He sets out to make her fall for him so he can “save” his brother from the gold digger. She is unknowingly deceived and after a night with Rowan, he forces her to leave. Years later, they meet again and sparks fly. Will the attraction overcome his previous treatment of her? Give it a read—you won’t be disappointed!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2025Maya Alden’s The Sweetest Taboo had me hooked from the start with its angst and drama, but I have to admit, some parts left me frustrated.
My Thoughts on the Characters
Isha, the female lead, starts off as a naïve 21-year-old, which I could understand. At that age, not knowing when you’re being played makes sense. But six years later, I was shaking my head. She still hasn’t learned much, and her decisions frustrated me to no end—from her lack of self-respect to her poor career moves and questionable choice of friends. Speaking of friends, Arturo and Mike are the absolute worst. Who shares their friend’s private business with a practical stranger? To me, they seemed more interested in creating drama than actually supporting Isha.
Rowan, the male lead, is one of the book's saving graces. He genuinely groveled, and I could feel his emotions, which added some much-needed depth. That said, Isha forgave him way too easily, and it felt like she was being a doormat rather than standing up for herself.
The Plot and Pacing
The story itself had its moments, but it definitely required me to suspend my disbelief. Isha’s decision to let a man who insulted her near her daughter, for example, left me stunned. And then there’s the pacing—the book could have been at least 10 chapters shorter. The last few chapters dragged unnecessarily and stretched the happy ending far too long for my liking.
That said, despite my frustrations, I couldn’t stop turning the pages. The angst kept me hooked, and I was dying to know how the characters would solve their issues. It’s the kind of book where, even when you’re rolling your eyes, you can’t help but keep reading.
The Writing Style
One thing I have to give credit for is Maya Alden’s writing style. It’s so conversational and easy to follow that I stayed engaged, even when I was annoyed with the characters. Her tone really pulled me in and kept me entertained.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, The Sweetest Taboo left me with mixed feelings. While Rowan’s genuine emotions and the story’s gripping drama kept me invested, Isha’s lack of growth and some of her decisions drove me crazy. The length of the book didn’t help either, as it started to drag near the end.
Still, I can’t deny that it’s an entertaining read. If you enjoy angsty, drama-filled romances with flawed characters, this one is worth picking up. Just be prepared to roll your eyes a few times along the way.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2024⚠️ REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS ⚠️
I fell in love with Maya Alden’s work, but it’s sad to say this one, the first book out of so many that I have read, I am just not a fan of. I almost DNF it. I gave it the 3 stars just because I KNOW her other books are super amazing and don’t want to knock her down as an author off of this one book that I personally did not like.
The MMC Rowan was just not redeemable in my eyes for the way he treated the FMC Isha. He said the most horrible things to her and she forgave him way too quickly if you ask me. Yes, 6 years went by, but he didn’t grovel enough in my mind. He said the most disgusting things to her and she still allowed him to take her virginity. Like why? Weak heroine’s with no backbone at all makes me scream! 🗣️😤
Here are some things the MMC said to the FMC that were just NOT okay:
"So, you're here for a goodbye f***? Is that it?" I hated that I still wanted him. Hated that I was happy he was here so I could say goodbye.
"Yes.
It shouldn't hurt, but it did. I'd fallen in love, but what did he feel?
Just lust?”
"Rowan, listen to me. This is my first time.'
I let out a laugh. "Sweetheart, don't kid a kidder."
"Get the f*** off of me, you a*****e."
And she still precedes to give her virginity to the MMC! 😒
The entire family treats Isha like she’s a piece of trash off the street, and her so called friend Ace (MMC’s Brother) allows it and even contributes to the disrespect. Like I just can’t get over how they treated her and towards the end all is okay. SMH.
Also, (PERSONAL RANT) I’m not sure what the obsession is with pubic hair for Maya Alden, but every single book so far that I’ve read from the author has focused on the FMC’s pubic hair, even goes as far in some books to say that women who shave/wax the hair completely off aren’t women and look like little girls. Every single book the focus becomes what type of coochie hair the FMC has, why? Why does that matter? Some women don’t like hair, some like a little bit, some like a full bush, who cares, it doesn’t make them any less of a woman just because of the type of snatch they have.
(PERSONAL RANT OVER) - this is the only story so far that I would not personally read again. All her other stories are chef kiss 💋
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2025I absolutely love this authors work and this book is no exception.
The characters were wonderful and fully thought out.
Isha has her demon's that she learns to let go of over time but they haunt her, Rowan is a typical alphahole who forgets that not everything is always as it seems.
Their chemistry was magic.
Couldn't put it down.
Seriously I have read this book in a day, it's 2am!
100 percent recommend
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2024Not gonna lie at the beginning I was totally on board with pushing Ro off a horse, but by the end he was definitely pulling on my heart strings. I’m so glad he got his head out of his butt and fought for his girls. Definitely worth the read 💕

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic second chance romance
This was such a great read. Definitely had that old harlequin feeling to the story, with a modern twist. I loved the heroine, she had a quiet strength. Plenty of angst and betrayals in this one. Definitely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always great
I really love every book of the author I read! I love the angst, the emotions, the groveling and the development of characters. For me it's the perfekt mix and I already noticed coming release dates.
In this story the mc messes really everything up by beeing mean. The fc takes her time and he has to grovel, which is just perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprised
It's surprisingly good and quite clever book. There is this bittersweet love story which leaves you moved and the happy ending gives you a sense that all can be made right and good in life

3.0 out of 5 stars A longer grovel period for Rowan's and Isha stood up for herself
I was drawn to this book by comments on social media. I have read many Maya Alden books and enjoyed them.
I didn't really believe Rowan's sincerity until much further in the book. It seemed only chance that brought him back into Isha's life rather than a desire to see her again. I was glad for how he ended up dealing with his brother and his mother.
Isha's character matured during the break. I'm glad she made Rowan's work for it.
I read on Kindle and read along on Audible.
