The Treasure & Broken: Two Short Stories Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

The Treasure

The village of Oakvale, where Matilda lives, and its twin village of Elmswood, have suffered great adversity and
poverty. For two hundred years, there has been war, as the villagers fight each other for the wondrous treasure that is
hidden somewhere in King Stephen’s castle. After two centuries of bombardment, the castle is in ruins, except for
one tower that remains impenetrable.

Alaric, an old, wizened man, is gatekeeper of King Stephen’s castle and its remaining tower. Matilda visits him every
afternoon. He is her only friend.

When the Oaf, Matilda’s step-father and his son make a final assault on the castle to find the treasure,
all their lives are turned upside down.

Broken

After the tragic death of her parents, Rachael Watson ran away, leaving her sister to manage the family
lavender farm and shop. Three years later, crushed by her unrelenting grief, workplace bullying,
guilt and shame for letting her sister down, Rachael decides to return home.

There, Rachael meets Ebony, a black mare who has been mistreated and beaten.
Rachael realises she is not the only one who has been broken.

Rachael promises Ebony she will always look after her, but has she spoken too soon?

Short stories are wonderful and enjoyable reading snacks for those times when there’s little time for a chapter from a 300 page novel. It’s like eating chocolate…one little piece is never enough. It takes talent to write short stories because they have the same elements as a novel; but much shorter so every word must count. The Treasure is a well blended twist of the Icarus myth of flying to close to the sun and Cinderella. Matilda has learned to navigate the harshness of her life with her despicable stepfather, Oaf and his son whom she has nicknamed Peacock. The story is about strength, adapting, survival and more importantly, leadership and ultimately peace both inside and out.Broken takes place in today’s world between two sisters, Stella and Rachel. After the death of their parents from a car accident three years ago Stella assumed the running of farm while Rachel ran from her grief and home. Now, three years later with no job and no place to go, Rachel returns home to somehow put her life back into the world of the living. Broken is a story of brokenness. Rachel is fragile and has given up on herself and her life. Then, there’s Ebony, a misused and abused horse who must learn to trust again. My heart just opened with every written word.I’m no stranger to Read’s writing as I have read all of her novels and enjoyed them all. These short stories left me pondering long after I closed my Kindle.A Pondering ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book contains two short stories. Both are heart warming and are wrote to be enjoyed from the heart. Reed did an excellent job so curl up with a soft blanket and a warm cup of tea and enjoy the words she's put together for you to snuggle up with. I definitely would recommend to other fellow readers.
