Richard: The Dragon's Curse Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

Everything is looking up for fifteen-year-old Richard Plantagenet. After defeating his chief political rival, Senator Spartacus, Richard’s rulership of the Milky Way kingdom seems assured. He’s also more adept at using his powers, like teleportation, shielding himself from harm, and conjuring things out of thin air—though this latter ability is still mostly used to make cheeseburgers.

More important to him than all those things is the foxlike Amber, the love of his life and soon-to-be mother of their two children. Unfortunately, her pregnancy has brought out her feral side. Her instincts are driving her to protect her cubs at any cost, even to the point of digging her fangs into Richard’s neck when he accidentally surprises her.

But Amber is the least of his problems, for in the darkness of another dimension looms the greatest threat of all, the great dragon. This massive and ancient evil will soon have a chance to escape its prison, and its only aim is to destroy the kingdom once and for all.

The Dragon’s Curse is the thrilling third volume in the Richard series, an epic saga of love, intrigue, and cosmic adventure.

Richard: The Dragon's Curse takes place in a universe where dragons, who were once the rulers of the Milky Way, have been exiled into a world where it's dark and lonely. Askook is the main dragon, an emperor with a past filled with battles. To Askook, he believes things are changing, and the time for revenge may finally be coming. On the other hand, King Richard tries to keep the peace with his enemies, but somehow ends up betraying his own rival, Antonius.

However, he gets imprisoned, and his family; Amber and their adopted son, Andreas, have to run for safety. But Andreas has a rare condition, and his family is desperate to find a way to save him. As the story continues, Richard faces the weight of being king, a confusing relationship with his wife, and even a mysterious figure called AAL who helps save Andreas. With dragons preparing to return to the Milky Way, can Richard save his kingdom without losing himself?

This is a great story that introduces us to a universe where the real domination of the storyline shifted between exile, vengeance, memory, and rebirth. The book's pace is balanced with bursts of action, like assassination and battles, which I enjoyed. The first few chapters laid the foundation of the exile of dragons, the betrayal of the king, and the mystery surrounding Andreas. With a steady pacing, the author deepens the narrative in the second arc, where the narrative starts to raise some moral questions, in my opinion. I found that these questions mostly revolved around identity, resurrection, and kingship.

Secondly, the story progression is non-linear but well-controlled, which kept me on my toes. The story moved fluidly between planets, timelines, and memories. However, it was done in such a way that confusion between each transition was kept at a minimum. It was nice to read between these transitions and how it added some sort of cinematic depth to the book. Each subplot, like a character's vengeance, mission, and sacrifice, contributes meaningfully to the overarching journey.

Furthermore, the narration has an epic and poetic feel to it. It has a combination of elevated language backed with switches of writing style. Sometimes the narration feels like I'm floating above everything, seeing the bigger picture of the plot (third-person omniscient). Other times, it feels like I'm right inside a character's head, hearing their personal thoughts and struggles (intimate third-person limited). This mix allowed me to understand the huge, external battles and the internal ones. Also, the character development was amazing. I noticed a pattern; the characters grow, break down, get back up, and surprise you.

In addition, this book was a great read. I don't find any aspects of it objectionable. It's complete with actions and great themes; all of which make a great book. I recognize characters being kicked out or locked away, and I loved that deep down, everyone was trying to find their way back. Characters were trying to find their way back home, back to peace, or back to who they used to be. Still on that note, I also didn't find any errors while reading. It's evident that this book was well edited.

Richard’s trials and tribulations continue to grow and become more intense as his impending crowing is due to occur. Richard faces death by the wings of dragons and the hands of enemies. AAL is tested by his boss, an ancient god who has his own motives for Richard’s success. A thrill a minute!

The author, Michael W. Hickman, once again provides a captivating tale that leaves the listener experiencing a wide range of emotions. The story progresses quickly and smoothly with action and moments of pain and happiness intermixed. Those who know about Richard and his new abilities are growing as is the support of his finally being crowned King. Hickman definitely knows how to keep the listener on the edge of their chair as he weaves a magical story of adventure, action, and deceit.

The narrator, Ron Allan Fouts once again delivers a strong and intriguing performance. He is consistent with each character from book to book maintaining the character’s integrity and strengthening it through his talented skills as a voice actor. He speaks clearly and with a steady cadence projecting the appropriate emotion and energy.

This is a fascinating series that grows stronger with each volume. A definite do not miss series!

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.

In Book 3, Dragon’s Curse, Hickman throws the throttle forward, hauls back on the narrative yoke and the story rockets straight for the horizon.

    Loved it!

The pace is faster here in number three, and the story streamlines towards the climax of the book. I gave this book five stars but would have given six if possible, because of the lovely change of pace.

We have new characters with Richard’s family growing and taking on more complexity, which is good because you have more to hang the story and plot on. Hickman does not let the complexity slow the story, which is an impressive feat of storytelling. It is easy to lose the plot (literally) in the details, and Mike deftly avoids this.

That the story achieves a main peak here in Dragon’s Curse is interesting, because I am interested in what the next installment brings. I’m already reading it as I write this, so the reveal will be soon!
