Murder Rides A Gale Force Wind: An Island Mystery Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

WAS IT REALLY MURDER? Big crime comes to a town too small to merit even that title. Residents of the loose-knit coastal community of Echo Bay struggle with the same issues as the world at large: drugs, mental health, racial friction, sexism, you name it. But everyone signs on to the code: whether you like them or not, you always help someone in need. When local prawn checker Tim Connolly doesn't show up for a dinner date with his girlfriend Kit Sampson no one is too concerned. But when a body is found washed up on an islet by young boaters, the discovery fragments the residents into a tumult of distrust and suspicion. And then the RCMP come calling. Far from the structures created to monitor and regulate larger populations, these people are resourceful, tough and sometimes merciless. If something needs to be cleaned up, they clean it up. They gossip, embellish, draw conclusions and take action. Sometimes disaster results, and sometimes a fitting outcome. The glorious beauty of the Broughton Archipelago, with Echo Bay at the heart of its inlets and islands, provides the backdrop for these colourful characters who 'rub along' but can take justice into their own hands when one of their own breaks the social contract.

About the Author

Yvonne Maximchuk is still exploring the Broughton Archipelago in her sixteen-foot speedboat SeaRose from her off-grid home on Gilford Island, still learning the secret world of islands and inlets from which she draws her inspiration. She is co-author of Full Moon Flood Tide, Bill Proctor's Raincoast (Harbour Publishing 2003) nominated for the Bill Duthie's Booksellers Choice award in the BC and Yukon Book Awards. A follow-up, Tide Rips and Back Eddies, Bill Proctor's Tales of Blackfish Sound was published (Harbour Publishing) in 2015. She created a colouring book, Colour the British Columba Coast; within its pages are forty drawings, along with a brief description of the scene and artist tips. Released June 2016 (Harbour Publishing) it quickly went to a second edition.

My favorite book of last summer...I can usually figure out the ending but I didn't see this one coming. I love that this book crosses so many genres, mystery, of course, and also a bit of history, science, travel, and romance. Yvonne includes such rich descriptions of real places in the Broughton archipelago I actually used it to visit one of the locations. The characters are so well developed I feel like I know them, and I love the factual info she includes about the history, local ecosystem, fishing and logging industries, and environmental impact on real places. It's a great book that you will enjoy even if murder mysteries aren't your usual thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars West Coast author brings an artist's eye to a début murder mystery.
Reviewed in Canada on May 10, 2023
Well- known West Coast artist and author Yvonne Maximchuk has chosen the murder mystery genre for her début novel, but her book is so much more than a simple 'who-dunnit?'.
With her artist's eye and sensibility, she has created a community of engaging, quirky, sometimes eccentric - but always believable - characters, all while depicting them against a vivid and evocatively drawn west coast of British Columbia backdrop.
Maximchuk's detailed descriptions of the locations in and around her beloved Echo Bay make this book a good read in itself, but certainly many of her readers will also look forward to reaquainting themselves with her cast of characters, should she decide to write a sequel.
For anyone interested in learning something of the history and current daily lifestyle of the setlements just off the coast of BC's Vancouver Island, as well as enjoying a modern day murder mystery and its attendant problems, then this is a very worthwhile choice.
