- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2024Square Peg in a Round Hole is a collection of poems, short stories, paintings, nature photographs, artistic photographs, and links to YouTube videos and web sites. The photographs were taken by Robbie Cheadle and the photographer Wayne Barnes. The poems, short stories and illustrations in the first 90% of the book were created by Robbie Cheadle and the poems and short stories in the last 10% of the book were authored by her son Michael Cheadle, a young man with an immense talent. The poems are in the form of haiku, shadorma, tanka, 99-syllable-double-ennead, and freestyle.
The book is divided into sections. The first section, Fauna, feature poems, paintings and photographs of rhinos, lions, hippos, birds and other animals. Next comes Flora, then the Ocean, then Life, featuring darker but poignant poems and images about the anguish and the hardships of life. After that comes War, Death, Power, Sun & Fire, followed by stories and poems about nature, especially birds, and finally Michael’s poetry and short stories.
Robbie is a naturalist with a great insight into African wildlife and nature. In her poems and her art, she showcases her understanding and love for the natural world. This makes her poetry especially beautiful and engaging. I learned a lot about the African wildlife and natural history by reading the poems and by looking at the photos and the art. I think my favorite nature poems were “The story of the desperate salesman” and “Nest Selection”, which beautifully depicted nest building and a male bird’s attempt to attract a mate. I could easily imagine the feelings of the animals depicted in the poems. I think my favorite poetic short story was “The Edge” about a little girl’s dangerous quest for a beautiful flower. And finally, Michael’s dark but poignant poetry is both thought provoking and emotional.
This book has a lot to offer. There’s poetry, photos, art, videos, short stories, information, and facts, and there’s a lot of beauty and wisdom in this book. Reading it was a pleasure. I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2024Cheadle outdid herself with this collection of poetry, artwork, and micro-fiction. I’ve enjoyed her work in the past, but I especially like the emotional depth she shares in many of these poems, which reflect on the hardness of life, love, and death. She dives into the stressors that have shaped her experience, including parenting, family illnesses, relationships, and work.
Not all the poems are bleak by any means. There are beautiful expressions of wonder, joy, and peace, as well as poems about South Africa’s wildlife and natural beauty. In addition to freestyle and syllabic poetry, the collection includes a variety of the author’s photos, wildlife videos, and exceptional artwork.
The book is divided into sections:
- “Fauna” includes poems about South African wildlife, one of the author’s passions, and an inspiration for some of the book’s exquisite artwork.
- “Flora” provides a lovely look at South Africa’s plant life, especially flowers
- “Ocean” included the most joyful and peaceful of the author’s poems

- “Life” was my favorite section as it was deeply emotional and often resonated.

- “Sun & Fire” had a variety of poems inspired by nature
- “Ekphrastic Poetry” was a compilation of poems inspired by photos from Wayne Barnes
- “Poetry by Michael” presented another set of emotional poetry, these by Cheadle’s teenage son.
Highly recommended to readers who enjoy a variety of poems about nature and life, both freestyle and syllabic, many complemented by beautiful artwork.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2024In the introduction of this fascinating book, author/poet Robbie Cheadle writes, “I have always been an outlier, a square peg in a round hole. As a small girl, I was different from my classmates. My life revolved around books, and my taste in reading material was always eclectic. No one else in my Grade 4 class was reading Stephen King. I was the only person in my first year of high school who was enchanted by Charles Dickens.”
Robbie is a talented writer, photographer, and artist. She brings all three of these skills together in this book, offering a rich and fulfilling reading experience. Her deep passion for wildlife and her efforts to protect endangered species in her native South Africa shines through in her poems, which are complemented by background information and links to relevant websites and videos.
The poetry in this book is a rich tapestry of styles and themes, ranging from light, humorous verses to stark warnings about climate change and drought. Robbie's delightful photos and artwork enhance the reading experience, drawing the reader into the diverse world of her poetry. Nature is just one of the themes in this book. She also explores her experiences with chronic illness, work, and other topics.
Her poems about environmental issues include the following:
Baked Mud (Shadorma)
Thirsty earth
Cracks gape in parched mud
Smooth flagstones
Hard edges
Crisscrossing old water sources
Prohibiting life
Questionable clouds (tanka)
Brooding clouds promise
Relief from aching dryness
Leached into earth’s bones
Sucking out all vibrancy
Fake news or deliverance?
~
If you love nature and Mother Earth, I highly recommend this beautifully illustrated collection of poems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed!
Robbie Cheadle shares a wonderful blend of poetry, photography and art. She displays her talent for all three in this collection. I very much enjoyed the artwork or photo that accompanied the poems and it really helped bring them to life.
For the poetry itself, I thought her writing was raw, honest, poignant, thoughtful and there were so many that I thought were relatable. My favourite types of poems are always shorter poems, I just feel like they hit harder. And that’s the kind of poems you will find in this book. I felt myself strongly agreeing with so many of the thoughts she shared in her poems.
Overall, I so enjoyed this book. It was not only well written, it was well put together too. The poems and images/artwork really complimented one another. One of the best poetry books I’ve read this year.
