- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2024I was so put off by the repetitive, endless “couldn’t shake the feeling that _____” that I almost put the book down and didn’t finish it. Sometimes it would be a couple of times on the same page! Seriously annoying! The other thing, was how often Kaden was “filled with a sense of”. Again, very repetitive and very annoying. The storyline was alright but the repetitive phrases just about ruined the book for me. It’s hard to enjoy a book, when every page or two, you roll your eyes and think, “OMG again??? Are you kidding me???”
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2024This book jumps right into the action, with Kaden looking for Lila in the office where they, apparently, both work. Lila is in trouble with the boss, but later we find out her job is, in fact, secure. Kaden got her the job and they have been together for awhile; however, they interact like strangers. Thus begins this strange book where two people who are supposed to be “together” seem to barely know one another.
Lila hurriedly leaves for upstate to care for her mother who has been taken by ambulance to the hospital. Kaden later follows when he doesn’t hear from Lila. As it turns out, Kaden really doesn’t know Lila and he definitely doesn’t know her mother.
While the concept of this book was so interesting, I found the book to be more of a report than a story. It was hard to develop intimacy with Kaden as the narration was so matter-of-fact and emotionless. Likewise, Lila is difficult to empathize with because she refuses to see what is right in front of her. Developing a relationship with Kaden could have helped pull me into the story. Maybe this could be done with a little more exposition? Developing the relationship between Kaden and Lila a little more in the beginning?
Although largely predictable, the story picks up near the end and there is an interesting twist that provides a little redemption imho.
Last, one random strength? This author is amazing when it comes to describing food. Each meal provides an occasion to show off descriptive writing skills that are second to none! This might read as sarcastic or even critical, but I do not at all mean it that way. Truly the descriptions of meals throughout this book made me hungry.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2024Florence was a very conniving diabolical character. This book was very suspenseful. I was rooting for Kaden and Lila all the way. Lots of secrets and twists!
