The Seaforth Heiress: Lady of the Last Prophecy: A Novel Kindle Edition
"The novel brings Mary Mackenzie and the mythical pull of the Scottish Highlands back into the well-deserved spotlight. Mary's character, her kindness, her search for knowledge, and her strong sense of social and family duty make her an engaging protagonist, and we learn a lot through her eyes." –Historical Novel Society
A century-old curse shadows the woman destined to be Clan Mackenzie's only female chief.
In 1803, the family of Lord Seaforth lives under the shadow of a dark prophecy. Over a century ago, Coinneach Odhar, known as the Brahan Seer, foresaw the demise of the Seaforth line. There is little doubt among Scottish Highlanders that the end of the dynasty is drawing near.
Mary Mackenzie, eldest daughter of Lord and Lady Seaforth, is determined to enjoy the privileged life which seems her birthright. But after her father accepts the British governorship of Barbados, Mary experiences an awakening of conscience. Initially confident Lord Seaforth will outlaw the barbarous treatment of enslaved Africans, she soon discovers the limits of his power and the weaknesses in his character that threaten her family's stability.
Marriage offers Mary a comfortable life in London, until a journey through southern India reminds her again of the injustices of conquest. Frustrated by her powerlessness, and ashamed of what she now views as her own hypocrisy, she longs to return home to Brahan Castle and the people of Ross-shire. But as a series of tragedies unfolds, Mary must confront a growing fear that the dire prophecy of her family's ruin is indeed coming to pass, and she may become the prophet's final messenger of death.
Inspired by true events, The Seaforth Heiress is a historical women of the Highlands novel by Elizabeth Hutchison Bernard, author of the Amazon bestseller Sisters of Castle Leod. The books in this series are standalone stories about fascinating women and family sagas that shaped Scottish history.

About the author

Elizabeth Hutchison Bernard is the author of bestselling historical and women's fiction. Her 2023 release, SISTERS OF CASTLE LEOD: A Novel (Book 1 of Historic Women of the Highlands), is Winner of the 2023 Maxy Award for Historical and Adventure Fiction and an Editors’ Choice of the Historical Novel Society. THE SEAFORTH HEIRESS: LADY OF THE LAST PROPHECY: A Novel (Book 2 of Historic Women of the Highlands) was an Amazon Kindle #1 New Release in Historical Biographical Fiction during August 2024 and has received favorable reviews from Kirkus Reviews, Independent Book Review, Readers' Favorite and others.
Elizabeth's historical mystery-thriller THE BEAUTY DOCTOR (2017, 2024) was a finalist for the prestigious Eric Hoffer Book Award. The book’s re-release in 2024 features a stunning new cover and an Author Preface with insights into social and moral issues of the Edwardian era that frame this shocking fictional story set in the early days of cosmetic surgery. Her historical novel TEMPTATION RAG was hailed by Publishers Weekly as a “resonant novel . . . about the birth and demise of ragtime . . . in which romance and creative passions abound.”
"I strive to write books that leave the reader with plenty to ponder," says Elizabeth. "Issues of trust, faith, and the role of destiny in our lives are themes that I often explore in my novels. I enjoy ambiguity, which is perhaps one reason I am fascinated by historical characters whose lives, in retrospect, can be interpreted in so many different ways."

- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2025Elizabeth Hutchison Bernard is a fantastic author who delivers another compelling story with “The Seaforth Heiress, Lady of the Lost Prophesy.”
Mary Mackenzie is a smart, beautiful and compelling heroine. Her journey into independence and love takes the reader from the British Colony of Barbados to India and then the Scottish Highlands. Along the way, Mary is haunted by a prophecy predicting the demise of the Mackenzie line. Hutchison Bernard crafts a word rich in texture and flavor reflecting the inequality and injustices of the time.
In these worlds, Mary must discover who she is and what she believes in, despite the choices made by her father. Armed with a powerful devotion to her family and lineage, Mary battles the curse which seems determined to destroy them all. I loved traveling with Mary as she uncovers her own power to create a destiny all her own.
This novel is a delight for the senses and the heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2025What i appreciate most about this historical book is that the heroine is written as a whole person. She was not a saint but a strong caring, loving woman. Her curt reactions and judgments in some situation s make her human.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2024Elizabeth Hutchison Bernard’s historical novels are notable for two features: they are firmly anchored in physical and historical space, and they feature heroines whose strengths (and occasional weaknesses) help establish both the themes and scope of their narrative and historical setting.
Her latest novel, The Seaforth Heiress, Lady of the Lost Prophesy, is set in the Regency period of British history, the era of the Napoleonic wars and the establishment of British nineteenth-century world hegemony. It offers us three different worlds—the plantation culture of Barbados, blighted by slavery and fever; the clash of Indian culture and British rule in India, and the closing days of the clan culture of the Scottish Highlands. Each is highlighted by a wealth of detail bringing these worlds to life.
The cast of characters includes several who left their imprint on British and indeed world history, among them British Admiral and war hero Samuel Hood, Sir Walter Scott, Francis Mackenzie, who was Baron Seaforth, Governor of Barbados and Chief of Clan Mackenzie, and the heroine, his daughter Mary. Their role in history gives the author the opportunity to expand the novel’s historical setting to take on issues such as slavery, British imperialism in India, women’s subjugation in India, and land clearance in the Highlands.
Early in the novel Mary is described a “too curious for her own good,” but it is her curiosity that opens our eyes to the world she lives in. We see her both enjoying the privileges of her station and wrestling with the injustices that underly it. Although at various times Mary speaks out against these injustices, at a key point in the novel she also has to admit that she herself is part and parcel of this oppressive system. Finally, as Seaforth heiress, she is able to confront and at least in part address them.
I personally took particular pleasure in the India narrative, because the setting was new to me and because the themes of the novel are fully developed here. The final third of the novel, set in Scotland, returns the heroine to her roots and resolves the family and historical issues raised earlier in the narrative.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2024I have read all of Elizabeth Hutchison Bernard’s books, and I had the same problem with all of them. I can’t put them down. That means many hours of lost sleep. I get so caught up in the story line that I continue to read past my bedtime. She keeps the reader wanting more and more. I can’t imagine how many months of research go into her books. I love them all. Angela Joseph
