Goldfield Forest (Unmistakably Mystical Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

In 1973, an archaeologist, August Alexander, having never seen an elf before, finds one stuck in a puddle of quicksand and pulls her out. The elf, Elabella, reveals the archaeologist's ancestors were guardians of the fae, and unknown to him, he is, too.

Years later, he becomes lost in the Amazon jungle. After wandering for days, he has little hope of survival. As he is about to give up, Elabella finds him. She leads him to a mystical clan of lion people who save his life. August’s rescue sets off a series of events affecting the supernatural world two centuries later, when the clan’s queen asks for help. Lena, the lion clan’s leader, needs a guardian to help her prevent the destruction of the rainforest and the annihilation of its magical inhabitants. She calls on Maria Goldfield, also an archaeologist, and a guardian of the fae who live in Goldfield Forest. Despite the danger and a looming invasion, Maria agrees to travel to the Amazon with Lena. As the fae of Goldfield Forest battle the invaders, Maria and Lena travel to the rainforest. There, with the help of a dragon and the little people of the jungle, they confront Bagrim and his pack of dogmen and fight for the survival of mystical creatures worldwide.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Writing in a variety of genres, Black's character driven stories rarely turn out quite the way the reader would expect. The author combines imagination and experience to weave dramatic plots with believable characters in descriptive settings, whether contemporary or supernatural.

Those familiar with her prose can attest to her fascination with the paranormal. Even when it isn’t the basis of the plot, it is not unusual to find a touch of the supernatural in her books. Occasionally, the reference is so subtle, the reader could miss it.

With a passion for animals, the author includes a four-legged character in most storylines, even if just a cameo appearance. Two of Black’s novels, “Race into Murder” and “Ride into Romance,” draw on her background as a racehorse owner. Her experience at the racetrack supplies realism to the setting, the races and the characters.

Black lives in the United States with her husband, and two alien creatures disguised as cats. While each of the furry critters is unique, one of them is rumored to be ET’s second cousin. The rumor, however, has not been confirmed.

Goldfield Forest by Karen Black is unlike a story I've ever read. It's almost like an Indiana Jones movie where archeologists seek a treasure that may or may not be real. However, this story is also about a pending war in a world seldom seen by others. Here, a warlock and his tribe of goblins, trolls, and dogmen want to rule the supernatural inhabitants of the Amazon rainforest. Standing in his way are leprechauns, elves, pixies, nymphs, fairies, ravens, a dragon, a telecat, and their exiled Queen of the Amazon, Lena.

Maria, a 21st century archeologist, lives in the Goldfield Forest with her father, Ross, and daughter, Ashley. Ross is the mystical guardian of the Goldfield Forest and has supernatural powers needed to protect the inhabitants. Maria sensed that she also has special "gifts" but never imagined that she was also considered by the inhabitants as their "Witch of the Forest."

Far from the Amazon, Lena's powers were limited. It was hoped that Maria finds the talisman, sets her free, and escorts her home where she is invincible and no match for the warlock.

Unfortunately, when Lena first exposes herself to Maria, the Queen's wherabouts become known to the warlock. He, in turn, prepares his army to head for Goldfield Forest to finally kill the weak queen. Only, she was no longer there as Maria got her back home safely before the warlock even left.

When a huge battle ensues in Goldfield Forest. Can Maria, Lena and her army arrive in time to save the inhabitants or will they get there to find Goldfield forest destroyed and its inhabitants eaten or dead?

The author does a wonderful job at bringing readers into a new world, filled with magic and mysticism. I was engaged from the very beginning and felt close to the characters. It's a story everybody should read and I highly recommend it and give it five stars.

As a visual person I can often create pictures out of words while reading. Goldfield Forest is an ideal example: plot, character, and dialogue combine, forming a perfect painting. As the action continues, it morphs into a film or play. In fact, because many of the characters use rhyming spells that are ballad-like in meter, I could imagine this story as a Broadway Musical! Against a backdrop of the Amazon Rain Forest and Goldfield Forest (home of the Guardians Maria, Ashley, and Ross) we are introduced to fairies, elves, telecats, and other enchanting magical creations including the reigning spirits, a lion and a dragon. When the dogmen and goblins appear, author Karen Black darkens the mood like a moonless night. I take exception to the Dogmen because I am a dog lover. But I know from previous books by Black, she is too. And I understand our favorite furry family members have to play the part of the bad guys once in a while! There is a wonderful gargoyle who shares a name with my son so this adds to my visual enjoyment. Most promising is a potential love interest. Perhaps this means a sequel will soon be in the creative cauldron from this delightful writer?

Imagination comes to life in this thrilling story. From the mysteries of Goldfield Forest to the dangers of the Amazon rainforest, Karen Black’s characters face challenges that go far beyond the normal world. As an archeaologist, Maria sets out with her partners, Chase and Marco, to find evidence of a lost civilization mentioned in an ancient journal she believes is true. Meanwhile, her delightful pre-teen daughter, at home with Maria’s father in Goldfield Forest, is on her own path of discovery. For both, a world unseen by most leads to powers that must come into play when the lives of the fae and those who care for them are at stake.

I fell in love with the vivid settings and the beautifully developed characters, each with his or her distinct personality. The realistic dialogue had me hooked, especially between the daughter and her grandfather and Maria with her partners. It was easy to suspend disbelief at the interaction with creatures we’ve heard about and possibly once believed in. The author masterfully wove the two realms together into a stunning, plausible whole.

    I highly recommend this book!

When I began reading this book, I felt as if it was going to provide a glimpse into an archeological trip based on an old diary. Instead, it creates a whole new world of fairies (the "fae"), goblins, dragons, witches, psychics, a lioness who lives inside a talisman, people who have conversations with animals, and much more.

The author essentially creates another world, one in which fairies are unseen by most but they're definitely everywhere. Only certain people who have the gift can see them and call upon them for help.

Maria, who's able to communicate with animals and is able to cast spells (does that mean she's a witch?), finds an explorer's diary from two centuries prior. This diary indicates that he found a secret castle in which he was cared for by "lion people" after having been lost in the Amazon jungle. Maria's an archaeologist, and she and her two fellow explorers, Chase and Marco, decide they're going to try to replicate the diarist's journey. Little do they know that it will take them on an adventure that's not in any archaeology curricula.

What I liked most about this book is that it could be read by most any age and still be enjoyed. I believe that twelve-year-olds would be fascinated by the world created by the author, all the way up to people my age--those of us who have twelve-year-old grandchildren.

Goldfield Forest reignited my imagination. It made my mind remember the joy in reading.
Fairies and elves and magic.. this book has it all. Black brings the story from the pages and engages the reader. I couldn’t wait to turn the page but I wanted to hold on to what I was reading so the story wouldn’t end. I would recommend this book to readers from teens to adults. Everyone needs a little magic in their life
