About the author

Welcome to my author page on Amazon!
To be honest, I never thought I would be an author. While going to school, English was my worst subject, next to phys ed. I was not an outdoor person, especially since I suffered from allergies and the medicines available would make me sleep until it was time to take the next dose. But I loved stories and books, so I read avidly all the mystery stories appropriate for my age. In my mind they played out like a movie.
Soon I was "directing" my own story movies in my head, with myself as the star of course. I daydreamed about being a princess from an unknown far away country or that a rich relative I never met left me their fortune. But it never crossed my mind to write them down, because silly things like grammar and spelling would slow me down or get in my way.
Years later this would all change. A close family friend introduced my co-author/mother and myself to Diana Gabaldon's time travel series that started with Outlander. We raced through all the books she had out in 2000 and discovered we had to WAIT for the NEXT one! Horrors!
I was married with children by that time, in fact I was pregnant with twins, when Mom and I were making yet another futile trip to the bookstore to see if the much awaited book was FINALLY OUT! Frustration overflowed and Mom griped, "What could possibly be taking SO LONG!"
My reply shocked us both: "So write your own story, if it's so easy!" She gaped at me, and when she could finally reply she said, "About what?!" All at once all the stories that played in my head came together as I snapped my reply that began a writing partnership I will treasure the rest of my life. We wrote our first manuscript that finished with a whopping 280,000+ words. After two years of attempted edits and unsatisfying critiques, we set that story aside and wrote Ethan's Flight.
Taking the lessons learned from our struggle with the first manuscript, Ethan's Flight was published April 2008. Sadly my co-author/mother passed away from complications with renal failure from diabetes in late 2009. I struggled with continuing a writing career without my partner for several years. Finally in late 2013 I was able to pick up a few of the pieces, connect with our mentor from Ethan's Flight, and begin editing the massive first manuscript.
With the support of my family, the encouragement and direction from my mentor, and the comfort, understanding and demands (When is the next book after Ethan's Flight coming out already?! Haven't I waited enough?!) from readers like you helped me take the steps necessary to pick up the pen and continue.
Thank you all so much! I appreciate you all more than you know. So, I have been working on the massive manuscript to attempt self-publishing and see if I can succeed with Legacy. If the response to this is everything I hope and dream, I will take back Ethan's Flight and release the second book as well. If I don't feel the response is the best for the series, I will continue with my current publisher. Either way, there will be a second book in the near future.
I would deeply appreciate reviews left for Ethan's Flight, and Legacy From Yesteryear and any future books. I am always thrilled to hear what others think and I am grateful to continue sharing my stories with you all.

Recently it has come to my attention that I have made a mistake. For those that have tracked me down on Facebook and e-mail, I apologize to you for the effort. I should have let everyone know I am working on Book 2 in the Legacy series.
When Mom and I originally wrote Legacy From Yesteryear, we had just finished the latest Diana Gabeldon in her Outlander series. We both loved a book with a serious amount of pages. So we took all the parts of a story we enjoyed the most and rolled them into one book. We tried the agent route and submitting it in as many places as we could afford, and were roundly rejected. So we set the story aside until we could find someone who had the chops to help us with the editing process.
After Mom passed away, I used the manuscript as a way to see if I was ready to begin again, because it needed so much work. Every time I attempted to edit I would fall to pieces and I would set it aside for a few months until I was ready to try again. It has taken me longer than I expected to work on this manuscript alone, but I was able to decide were to break it apart and make it a more acceptable size for those that are just being introduced to our writing. (For those that would have preferred the whole 325,000 word enchilada, I am sorry. I mean no insult to you. Believe me, I would rather have left it in one piece.)
Rest assured, I am working on the next book in the series. I apologize again for disgruntling so many of my new readers. I will communicate better with y'all from now on.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2025Words cannot express how much I enjoyed this story from beginning to end. The bonds between the siblings, the growth and feelings!
The diverse family dynamics each pair came from was a beautiful balance on top of the outrage of Ethan's wrongful conviction. Even though it was on the synopsis, it still came as a shock.
I need to book to continue to set who the real killer is, please and thank you, Ms. Trout.
The found family vibes and community tribal feels were exactly what this story needed.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2025Oh wow, you can tell that the research put into this book is super well done. It’s very authentic to the time.
This is a very sweet and almost gentle romance with a little bit of mystery thrown into the mix.
I wasn’t aware going into this book that it’s actually a duology. So head’s up on that before you start reading...
Ethan and Edward are brothers on the run. Their love for each other is the
foundation for this book, utterly and completely. They’re in it together, and they’re in it for the long haul. Along with Debora and Stephanie, another pair of siblings, who face their own challenges on a day to day basis. Their stories eventually mingle, and then there’s so much more... Check it out!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2025Ethan's Flight is a breathtaking story set in the old west. Victoria Trout and Penelope West beautifully managed to interweave romance and engaging mystery.
I need to know who did this to Ethan! I will definitely be continuing with the next entry.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2015I received a free copy for an honest review.
When I started reading, I thought that I had started a book about politics, and so settled my mind into the paths needed to evaluate a dry, non-fiction, political essay. What I sank my teeth into, instead was a vibrant, rich tale set in historical America with characters who were close to, but not part of, many of the political leaders of the day. What a wonderful surprise it was too!
The pace was well set - fast enough to keep it interesting. Enough clues being thrown in to keep you guessing, and a distinct story with no cliffhanger at the end. There is one piece of unresolved mystery, but that is an obvious set up for the next book (or however many are to follow) in the series. It in no way detracts from the actual conclusion of the story.
The setting showed the author's attention to detail and historical research. The necessary world building was handled very well - as they were needed, the details were provided. This enabled the story to be acted out in front of a variegated, rich tapestry of historical events and places without distracting from any of the carefully woven subplots that thread through the story itself.
The character development shone as well. A few points might be stretching the truth a tad, but this is fiction, and I will not be put under oath that what I remember from my history classes is the only way things occurred back then. With the obvious research that went into the setting, I'm sure just as much went into crafting the skills and personalities of the characters - and it shows. All of the characters were believable, as was their responses when faced with unusual (to us) situations.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2023This historical fiction was a sweet story of two brothers and two sisters and their journeys. I appreciated the setting and the sweet characters. I don’t want to give anything away, but I’m anxious to see what happens in the next book! Truly a squeaky clean story with a historical backdrop and very likeable characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2024I’m so glad I picked up “Ethan’s Flight”. I love stories where the romance is interlaced with mystery, intrigue and family drama, and this book is all of that. It pulled me in from the first page, evolving in my mind’s eye like a timeless classic movie.
After Ethan is framed for a murder he didn’t commit, his brother Edward, with their father’s complicity, breaks him out of jail and the two brothers escape Boston. They seek refuge in a small town in Missouri where they find work under a fake identity and eventually discover their soul mates in sisters Debora and Stephanie. The ending leaves readers with no resolution to the murder mystery, indicative of a new installment to come, and I can’t wait to learn the brothers’ fate in Victoria’s next book.
The meticulously researched historical references lend authenticity to the story, immersing the reader in the time period and enhancing the overall experience. Victoria Trout has woven a richly detailed, captivating tale that is both heartwarming and thrilling. Highly recommended for fans of western historical romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2023The plot involves a young man being framed for murder and being broken out of jail by his brother after a guilty verdict, which is intriguing enough.
The main characters are nominal Christians from an upstanding Boston family. They and other characters seem a bit stilted. A couple of historical references stand out: A reference to discussions among transcendentalist authors in Boston is interesting. But it doesn't quite fit the timeline of President Pierce's term, which is about 25 years later than the height of the transcendentalist movement.
The author's portrayal of one character with apparent dementia was not believable, with his only symptom being his mixing up of names, particularly those of his future son-in -laws whom he addressed as various biblical character. Early in the book, the author mixed up the names of two main protagonists.
The ending kind of leaves the reader hanging as a hook into the next novel which is missing.
It's a decent amateur effort, but I regret my purchase. Although Amazon accepts Kindle returns, it is not possible after reading a book that turns out to be disappointing.
