At home in Washington, the president is detached from reality. Survivors of his cabinet contend with military leadership for control, some to save the nation they serve, others in pursuit of personal power. As America becomes alienated from her allies, Russia begins a campaign that creates heightened fears of nuclear annihilation.

Bill must navigate a political minefield to find friends among China's neighbors while undertaking a role that demands he take unimaginable risks and wrestle with the question, What losses are acceptable in order to win?

Praise For Against All Enemies:

“This action-packed naval thriller comes ominously close to reality in imagining the events leading up to, and into, a Third World War...the novel moves from war zones to the boardroom machinations playing out in Washington and Moscow. Action and political intrigue are woven into a taught story that equally draws from world-domination strategy games and blockbuster war films…Wing’s first-hand experience in naval combat and decades of service as a Navy Surface Warfare officer are on full-display in immersive combat scenes…of real-world fighting. The combination of chaos and calm that unfolds in the command center of a naval destroyer fighting for its life is captured with uncanny reality…These clear, authentic description of modern warfare practices are thrilling…An eerie depiction of the contemporary world sliding from an imaginable military conflagration to war of an unimaginable scale, Against All Enemies is a thrilling exercise in political prophesy.”
-Warren Maxwell, Independent Book Reviews

"In his book
Against All Enemies, author Thomas Wing has provided us with a fascinating tale of what may happen if the Chinese committed a limited, surprise attack against the United States. The Chinese believed that a non-nuclear attack that significantly destroyed our ability to respond would force a wounded US to accept an immediate cease fire agreement. They were wrong, and elements of the Pacific fleet took the fight right back to them. Outnumbered, and for the most part fighting without communications and satellite assistance, Commander Bill Wilkins and the crew of the USS Nicholas wreak havoc on the Chinese navy. The author's portrayal of the naval combat kept my attention throughout the book. Anyone who enjoys reading military fiction should enjoy this book." -Bob Doerr, Military Writers Society of America

"...drawing comparisons to the suspenseful narratives of Tom Clancy,
Against All Enemies presents Commander Bill Wilkins as a character reminiscent of the renowned Jack Ryan. ...does not shy away from the gritty realities...in vivid detail. An underlying theme explores the concept of patriotism in a modern context. ...invites readers to ponder what it means to fight for one's country when the very essence of that country seems undermined by its leaders.
Against All Enemies offers more than just a military thriller; it is a reflective journey into the complexities of loyalty, leadership, and the often-blurred lines between ideals and reality." — Literary Titan

A graduate of both the Naval Academy and US Naval War College, Tom retired after serving 32 years as a Navy Surface Warfare Officer. Now a full-time writer of nautical fiction, both historical and modern, he's completed two novels and begun work on a third. Unable to constrain himself to a single time period, his debut novel, Against All Enemies, is set in the near future, perhaps tomorrow. The story has won seven awards and received numerous five-star editorial reviews.

His second novel, the first of a trilogy to be published over the next 24 months, takes place against the backdrop of the American Revolution. Following completion of the trilogy, his next work will be loosely based on his father's and two of his uncles' service during World War II.

Tom lives in San Diego with his wife and daughter, a cat, and a dog. He spends what time he can on the water.

In his diverse career, he has taught Coast Guard licensing courses at all levels; held licenses himself for Master of Vessels up to 1600GT; Second Mate, Unlimited Tonnage; and Master of Sailing Vessels up to 50GT; all were endorsed Upon Oceans. He also held a ticket as an Able Seaman, Unlimited. He founded and served as Executive Director for the Continental Navy Foundation, which conducted experiential education at sea for young people aged 13-17 years. Finally, he commanded the Foundation's tall ship, brigantine Megan D.

Fine and Brilliant First Novel ...

Fine and Brilliant First Novel ...
It is with great pleasure that I sit down to write this short review of this fine and brilliant first novel. Having said that, I must divulge that I am a first cousin of its author. And, as such, it may be said that I have somewhat more insight into the book than other reviewers. Many have noted resemblances to the work of David Poyer and Tom Clancy, few have heard the echoes of C.S. Forrester's “The Good Shepherd”. Such literary connections, though, should not serve to restrict its potential readership. At its core, “Against All Enemies” is a story of people on the job, their very human failings, attachments, and the diverse globe-spanning conflicts that affect them. The settings of the book are varied, ranging from shipboard in the Pacific to locales on land and at sea the world over. Its home is the U.S. Navy with its ranks, techniques, protocols, and overarching traditions. The job is protecting the country — in the hope of thereby safeguarding the world. For those willing to sail along, the novel is brimming with professional detail enabling those interested to step into the situation and experience them, as the characters do. But, it is also possible to remain principally connected to the book's human story, without delving into the panoply of naval minutiae. Its central recurring character is Bill Wilkins. More guardian (in a truer rendition of the Platonic ideal) than hero. He takes us along on his journey of loss, trauma, and ephemeral victory. It all rings very true, sometimes terrifyingly so. Indeed, one episode forced this reader to set the book down for a time.Bill survives the conflict, although many do not, bearing wounds that only those who know can see.Rereading is something which I reserve only for the very best books. Those reading this review should know that I have started rereading this book — and expect to do so many times.Godspeed to Nicholas.

I found the topic interesting and enjoyed the writing from a military point of view. The author creates no super heros rather his characters are all too human. He effectively describes the challenges of leadership in the military. His grasp of interactions outside the military bubble however is wanting. Clearly his disregard for a former officer holder has colored his opinion of political leaders to the point of making them all cartoon characters. The resolution to the conflict is a bit of wishful thinking times 3. That being said, this was an enjoyable read.

Worthy military thriller writers such as Mr. Wing make it their duty to portray in detail exactly what a war with a near-peer enemy such as China and the Soviet Union would look, feel, and sound like. In his novel Against All Enemies, he accomplished that feat flawlessly. It reminds me of a police ride-a-long when a citizen steps into the world of law enforcement for an evening and leaves the car at EOW, a transformed person for all the experiences encountered. Mr. Wing accomplished just that. He takes the reader on a ride from the bridge of a destroyer under attack and the life and death decisions that must be made instantly, with no second chance. Get it wrong, and the entire crew could pay for the error with their lives.

In war, the soldiers and sailors are on the front lines. But there’s much more to the equation. Mr. Wing takes us inside the White House and the halls of American power to witness some blistering back and forth as policy and courses of action are prepared, argued, and initiated. Like war, politics can get ugly with their own form of casualties. Agree or not, the author brings this to the forefront with several chilling chapters as egos get in the way of thoughtful planning. That’s politics, and in any given political cycle, events could easily transpire just as the author so dramatically wrote. Wars are fought by differing personalities, and Mr. Wing did an excellent job bringing that point home. I highly recommend Against All Enemies.

I enjoyed this book and it was a tightly plotted novel about what would happen if World War III broke out between the US and NATO on one side, and China and Russia as aggressors. As others have mentioned, the politicians are almost caricatures but one of way of looking at it is what kind of leaders would allow the fighting to go to the depths it does in this book, which overall I found to be well researched and plausible, assuming the initial conditions for War breaking out occurred. My favorite part of this book are the scenes on board tje naval ships, where you can tell the author's military and seaman experience helped him craft super realistic dialogue and portrayal of how the many teams on board a U.S. Navy ship work in partnership. If you like Tom Clancy novels, you will love this book!

I too am US Navy, I was retired medically 2014 as a servive connected disabled Veteran. I mention it because this book is excellent in US Navy doctrine, wording and how we operate. In, fact began my career as a Sonar Technician Surface, STG. The military aspects, the books scenario of a very real start to WWIII, is right on. It is the exact scenario I trained for later in my career. The writing is accurate and clearly well worded for even civilians to understand. I would have highly recommended it if for one huge issue.

That being said, I am very disappointed in how the story portrays the President in this book, and cabinet, as completely unhinged. I am not party affiliated, and in fact don't really care on a personal level for the previous president but, what we have now is a serious concern. That being said, the author went too far with his personal feelings about a previous president.

I don't care what bug the author has up the backside for a certain president, but he should have left that animus and personal whatever out of this series. You, the author, came up with a great novel.. but each time you throw this utter disdain you have of a president into this story, AND THEN tie it to somehow coming close to a nuclear release authorization, I find myself losing any more desire to continue reading because that scenario is absolute garbage and the author knows it. Even though as I said the full scenario is well done and flows nicely, this part of the book just makes the rest of everything written feel out of any kind of believable possibility.

Being the author is former military as I am, I would have expected at least some decorum and not to make the USA look so stupid as to think this could ever happen in the presidency. The major and full checks and balances would kick in, of course, but at the same time the portrayal of an insane president who has not been removed by the other two branches of power, to the point he could try to launch... is laughable. Those paragraphs you wrote make it look like you took all the unhinged bull from CNN and MSNBC, threw them together and that's what you came up with...

It is odd for you to write so well about the actual scenario of war and then ruin it by some political emotional issue you have with one person you clearly hate.

I have not decided yet if I will get the next novel.. as I said the overall scenario and writing are well done... if I do, I hope you decided to leave out all that bull. If you want to portray a spinless inept president, so be it but you went way too far and made it obvious who you were attacking... and worse, most of that garbage is not even close to the truth, regardkess whether someone even likes or supports that person, which I don't myself. But I do call it the way I see it. And in this case you let that ruin an otherwise awesome book.

Next time, leave that out ofnyour writing.

Military fiction is always tricky in that you have to strike the balance between detail and readability. Thomas has done a great job on achieving the balance. I haven’t read a military novel this good since the likes of Tom Clancy and Harold Coyle.

Great characters and story lines and none of the excessive ‘American’ spirit that have tainted some novels. The USN is a very professional force but it has strengths and weaknesses in its people and equipments just as we all do.

I admire the willingness of the author to include a political element covering US leadership that some in the MAGA camp may find ‘offensive’. Though the US President is a fictitious character, as a non American, this character seems to be similar to how we perceive a former US President. The way the author has shown that this impacts on the willingness of the Europeans to support American, is a very good reading of international relations. I shake my head trying to understand how a country that produce leaders like Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Reagan and Obama can elect a Donald Trump.

    A great read!
