Ashes in Venice: A Vengeance Thriller Kindle Edition
"Unpredictable, brilliantly crafted and deliriously unhinged, we can't get enough of Ashes in Venice, and you won't either." -BestThrillers.com
A heartless psychopath with size 16 shoes, nursing home hookers and an irreverent Las Vegas homicide detective with a gambling habit set the tone for this off-beat tale of revenge and retribution.
Blackjack addict Frank Savic is deeply in debt and facing family problems when he's asked to delay his retirement to catch a vigilante killer who murders other murderers in a manner the veteran cop has never seen.
While dead bodies stack up in quick succession, the motorcycle-riding policeman also finds himself reluctantly involved with a desperate mother who will do anything to get justice for her dead son.
Savic, his investigation complicated by a suspected FBI coverup and a prison bribery scandal, is unaware that the murderer might be the solution to his own financial and domestic dilemma.
Add a vengeful killer who seeks justice for his own unbearable loss and you have a teasing psychological thriller that blurs the line between good and evil and where surgical bone saws and spiders are just tools of the trade.
Yes, there are spiders.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2023I’m a fan of author Gojan Nikolich’s books, both “The Gopher King” and his latest, “Ashes in Venice.” But the thing about Nikolich’s novels, apart from brilliant writing – from the absurd to the macabre – isn’t the story so much. Nikolich’s books are deep dives into the silent psychology of wounded men – men struggling to be true to who they are, to the better parts of themselves, when the world has come crashing down around them. The men he portrays as his central characters aren’t going to “get help.” You won’t find them in group therapy or ever, ever talking about their trauma or feelings. They’re teetering on the edge, and the edge is as close to the abyss as it gets.
It's hard to review “Ashes” without giving too much away. There’s a lot going on in this book, which is written in rich and deftly researched detail. This detail unfolds in nearly literary prose filled with the worst horrors imaginable.
Navigating these horrors is Frank Stavic, a dogged middle-aged homicide detective who is drifting his way to an impoverished retirement. He’s seen too much, and there’s no refuge for him when he’s away from the job. His wife, with whom he remains faithfully in love, has developed early-onset dementia and lives in the memory care unit of a nursing home. Insurance doesn’t cut the bill, and he’s tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Still, he is trying desperately to find a way to retire, to be there for his wife one hundred percent of the time – before she gets the boot from the nursing home for non-payment.
He gambles because that’s the Hail Mary to save the day. It doesn’t.
Meanwhile, Frank’s retirement is put off. The department needs him to solve a gruesome series of murders – though the victims are hardly to be mourned. The killer has a penchant for killing killers.
But Frank does his job, despite his entire life falling into every kind of ruin imaginable.
The killer who Frank is determined to find isn’t of the Dexter sort. He wasn’t a killer by nature, but when his world comes crashing down, he takes slow, methodical revenge. And he’ll take it for those who can’t as well.
For Frank, tiny and even improbable clues – perhaps purposefully left – allow him to put the puzzle pieces together. He’ll get his man. Maybe. Unless the man has other plans.
Nikolich lets the story unfold masterfully, as slowly and as calculated as his killer’s revenge play. There is a nasty but deserved brutality throughout the book. Yet you’ll never feel sorry for the victims.
Which side of the abyss his characters will fall becomes all too clear by the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2022A pretty dark thriller. The first pages gave great descriptive detail that I appreciated because it gave me a feeling of familiarity of the area and situation. After that brief appreciation, there was too much ancillary detail which wasted time and cluttered the story with no added value. The tortures had too much totally unnecessary detail, but I'm interested in the mystery and action, so maybe other readers enjoy descriptions of carnage? Not me.
Weaving the path and story together was well done and kept my interest. Only noticed a few proofreading errors. Characters seemed fairly true to life.
If you can grit your teeth and get past the excess torture/killing descriptions, then what is left is a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2022I haven’t read many crime thrillers. I guess I thought of them as pulp, and I wanted to fill my limited reading time with “great literature,” literature that would teach me something about writing, since writing fiction had become my new avocation.
But someone recommended Ashes in Venice as being exceptional, and so I added it to my Kindle queue. It grabbed me immediately in the way that some of the really well-made crime series on Netflix did (“Ozark,” “Narcos,” “Giri/Haji,” “Ratched,” “White Lines”). These I watched purely for entertainment value, not to hone my writing skills. But Ashes did both. I was bowled over, not just by the story, but also the writing craft and careful research that made the book so very authentic and enjoyable.
This is Grojan Nikolich’s second novel. I read his first one and it was very good; funny and charming in a slightly twisted way. But Ashes in Venice is a step up, his crowning achievement, so far.
I won’t say much about the plot for fear of accidentally letting slip any spoilers, but I will say that the “braided plot”―starting each chapter with a focus on a different major character―and tying it all up ever so neatly at the end was most satisfying. As it says right on the cover, this is a “vengeance thriller” and it features some very, very bad people―and a couple of good ones: one representing retribution, the other justice. I can say no more, except get it and read it!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2022I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I had a hard time getting into this book at first. I found all the characters being
introduced were a bit confusing and not sure how they were all going to tie in
together. However, as I got more to the middle of the book things started to make much more sense. Overall, I liked the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2023I absolutely loved this book for the creativity of the riveting story, the fascinating characters, the instances of humor occasionally sprinkled throughout and the style of writing, which is impeccable. All-in-all, I highly recommend this book, which is definitely for lovers of action and, yes, extreme violence.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2022This book has everything to satisfy any reader: gruesome criminals, grieving and looking for justice vigilantes, and ready to retire an old-school detective, working on his last case.
Some people may find a few graphic details of the crimes and revenge too much for their taste, but, believe me, do yourself a favor, skip a paragraph or two and treat yourself to this wonderful novel written by a master storyteller.
My favorite parts of the book were detective Frank Slavic, and his visits to the nursing home to see his wife Maria. These chapters are filled with love, tenderness, and sadness about the passing of time, mixed with just the right dose of irony and humor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vengence thriller indeed
Ashes in Venice is written with exquisite attention to detail without being overly wordy or descriptive (for the most part), just enough to have you feeling that you are there, seeing it, feeling it, hearing it. The main protagonist is rather an anti-hero, correcting what he fells needs to be corrected. Punishing when the punishment was not enough, or waylaid by technicalities. (It's kind of hard not to agree with him to be perfectly honest). Some brutal scenes here without being overtly gorey as well. Alot is alluded to but left to your imagination as far as the actual act itself. We are treated to the aftermath as the character of Detective Frank Slavic is brought in. It was a good read. Kept me invested as to where the story was going until the end. A vengence thriller is what was promised and a vengence thriller is what you get.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest and unbiased opinion of the tale.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nope.
Sadly this was disjointed and wholly unsatisfying. I had no idea who was doing what and the story itself paid scant respect to the blurb. A real letdown.
